The pound with a storage shed built early 1980,s Also that beautiful red brick building was very a very diffrent design from all asylums around the world it had a day room with a watch deck on top. I know more than most about Tokanui as much as I despise the place I know exactly why how and allways the reason why I do love but hate the place so much.

Taylor s was always a bit unsafe especially on high tide and always remembered when we went over their for two nights we went a bit hungry and ran out of food we had to be ready to leave if the tide got to high but the roar of the waves was really loud it is a very spiritual place good to see their are some of us who have not given up on the real Ness of nature and have a genuine respect for nature and the way life used to be sea sand fishing and walking climbing 🎉

This video/ place haunts me. I saw it about a year ago and every now and then I think about it. Had to come back and watch. I love nz history. Thanks so much for your channel.

My grandmother used to work here, she still has her set of keys somewhere from when it shut down. My cousin and I have always wanted to go and explore. It's great to see what it looks like behind the fences

Awesome video dude. I have "Go South" on DVD, and it has a cab view of the newer version of this tunnel in its entirety.

Are you sure you had safety people on the outside when you entered the mine? I can't see how a GPS locator can work inside a mine tunnel under ground. Doesn't it need to be able to "see" & pick up satellites to show your position?

Yes, always have a safety person outside, yes it's a specialized equipment can work until you reach 800 metres, thank you for watching and commenting 😎👍

The pattern on the Carpet is called 'Fleur de lis. The fleur-de-lis, also spelled fleur-de-lys (plural fleurs-de-lis or fleurs-de-lys),[pron 1] is a common heraldic charge in the (stylized) shape of a lily (in French, fleur and lis mean 'flower' and 'lily' respectively). Most notably, the fleur-de-lis (⚜️) is depicted on the traditional coat of arms of France that was used from the High Middle Ages until the French Revolution in 1792, and then again in brief periods in the 19th century. This design still represents France and the House of Bourbon in the form of marshalling in the arms of Spain, Quebec, and Canada - for example.

People should be aware that while the Seddonville (North entrance) is closed some way in because of the rockfall, it is still better than nothing and you can get some good sightseeing in until you hit that. The DOC signage on Charming Creek Rd Seddonville explains this clearly. Because if you try go in the Ngakawau (Southern entrance) way it is not going to happen. It is impassable now due to the slip you point out at 23;00. which is no longer a 'wee' one but huge. I wished we had known this in advance but we got so much misinformation even after the fact. Some point between April and now things got a lot worse probably due to the extreme weather through October. Anyway it;s a shame and one day perhaps I'll try again but it's unlikely I will be able to do so.

The Chasm Creek walkway holds a couple of treats. About 100m short of the tunnel you cross a small bridge. The Mokihinui river is full of old railway carriages pushed in to save the line. 50 yards short of the tunnel on the right is a little cave where the shot firers used to shelter when blasting the tunnel.
@stephendwyer4659
@stephendwyer4659 Ай бұрын
The first coal shipped off the West Coast was mined on the North Bank of the Mokihinui river opposite the tunnel. It was then barged down the river to Scott's Bank and put onto a sea faring ship. The piles to the coal wharf are still in the river.
