It sounds like they're using nonsense sounds to me, it sounds very similar to when improv actors try to sound like they're speaking a foreign language, it's very repetitive and they always speak for around the same length of time.

Well, I don't know who will see this but I'm Hamilton, a trained translator (working mainly in English, French, Twi and Spanish) and I would love to study with you (at least, online) if possible. In exchange, I wouldn't mind interpreting for you when you have to interact with African students, especially, whose accents aren't always too 'discernible'. All the best to you all!

1:17:53 that is just crazy. Think about it. In order for government to save money US courts would outsource court interpreters as UK. I think sentences should be appealable and probably a complaint can be filed against the judge for allowing outsiders who are unfamiliar with US legal system (e.g., like hiring interpreters from Peru because they're cheaper) who have no formal training or education in US court interpreter school and who do not even live in USA to interpret in American courtrooms for an American defendant non-English speaker would be liable. Think about it. It looks completely reckless on the judge for allowing such nonsense; judge may even be disbarred for that.

Interesting note about Judges not respecting the interpreter. Often, it is a power dynamic. Working many years in the legal field, many attorneys won't respect subordinates even though they may have decades more experience than them. This is a miscarriage of justice and often interferes with due process due to one-upmanship battles that detract from the case at hand.

Imagine, 9 years ago there already was remote interpreting, now interpreters don't even move out of their homes in order to interpret . With a few exceptions , of course!

The patient doesn't speak English, that's the issue. Why is she asking for help in English and then Miguel introduces himself in English if he's the Spanish interpreter?

The video clip is letting us see from her perspective. That she understands the interpreter and we understand her but she can not understand the Doctor or Nurse. We also do not understand the Doctor or Nurse too.

I find him clever and clearly he is esteemed in the field but I find the fight against additions and everything is domesticated actually just frustrates the conversation of learning and progression. I also feel like there is an ego at play and need for recognition which I don't have any interest in for translations personally.
@backpackingwithlidia3559
@backpackingwithlidia3559 4 жыл бұрын
@lalala I've read his books for my dissertation. This was my personal opinion but I think this has a lot to do with the aims of a translation and the aims of a reader. Assuming I don't read, doesn't make your counter argument stronger either...
@backpackingwithlidia3559
@backpackingwithlidia3559 4 жыл бұрын
@lalala I completely disagree with you, and think this argument is valid in certain contexts but I don't agree with it as a whole. Venuti specialises in literature translations first of all so let's stick to topic. The argument of domestication refers to keeping closely too the original text even when it may confuse the reader. There are very limited translations that would require this or where the reader would want this. It's a very language learner perspective. I don't go to a restaurant and expect to be made to cook or demonstrate my cooking ability. Not everyone that reads is looking for understanding of the language and that is every readers choice. If you are referring to being against neoliberalism, in that readers should not have a choice to assess foreign literature without fighting the text, then I totally disagree with you.

Does any organization offer scholarships for studying translation and interpretion?
@NellieKAdaba
@NellieKAdaba 8 жыл бұрын
I do not think so, I never received scholarships for my translation studies on-site or on-line(2007-present) nor for my interpretation training (which I do strictly online). These are studies, that people do after having earned a Masters, done graduate studies, so there is no scholarship, but you can have a degree in translation and/or interpretation, or non-degree credit , and get certified through organisations, companies, seminars, and webinars.
