'It's alright' meaning, yeah it sucks, is the 100% exact meaning of 'it's alright'. Oh, and edit, Sienfeld didn't get big here cause we don't do canned laughter and wiseguy always gets the girl every episode. It had nothing to do with him being Jewish. I'd guess 95% of Brits never even thought about that. This, remember is was a guardian article, and here the guardian has a, how do I say it?... 'reputation'. So I refute that article totally. If it was because of that then Woody Allen never would have made it big here either, or some of the old one liner New York stand ups who were always well received here, mostly for making fun of how Jewish they were. Honestly, we don't care, and I'll take the liberty of saying I speak for the majority.

To become the American President you need to invest Millions if not Billions on your campaign. The vast majority of American citizens are ruled out on this alone. Are you Presidential material? Seriously?

I found the US version of the office unwatchable. All of the magic, and the whole point of the show, was gone. It had been turned into a mediocre farce, which was a huge climbdown from its UK origins.

No, not because it is Jewish, exemplified by the outstandingly funny "Friday Night Dinner" - if only there could have been more, RIP Paul Ritter.

The great US freedom trope has been a known fallacy to the rest of the world for a while now. It’s like being cool; if you have to call yourself cool, you aren’t. If you have to go on about how free you are, you probably aren’t.

We have some awesome slapstick in the form of Bottom with the late great Ric Mayall. Also for the ultimate in deadpan look up Jack Dee or his sitcom Lead Balloon.

Sunday roast means roast meat of some sort - beef, lamb, chicken etc. With gravy, roast potatoes, veg, often yorkshire puddings. Mine is better than my mothers. Not all women underdress to insane levels for the weather. Lucy knows alot about being a posh white English (London) girl in her late twenties, and not much about the rest of the UK.

Just here to say I eat a small breakfast and Scottish universities are free to Scottish students. English and international students have to pay, of course. And even if you go to uni at 18, your parents want you to come home for the holidays, and if you don't go to uni they don't kick you out, by and large. I want my daughter to stay home till she can afford to buy. And I never read tabloids, or get milk delivered. My husband is the milkman's baby. Literally, my father in law was a milkman when he was born.

Another interesting point is that self deprication indicates more self awareness of ones flaws and strengths. This is preferable to Brits as someone who is 'too' confident either has no awareness of themselves, or has something to hide.

That article is a load of bull crap.... there is no way Brits don't like Seinfeld because it's East Coast and Jewish... We go for style of comedy - not if it's West Coast or East Coast. And MAN... I am so glad that you didn't like the British version of the Office much... because i'm a Brit and I didn't for sure... I felt just like you.... Far too cringey. Plus the style of comedy was a complete rip off of Peter Kay's earlier career. I grew up with Tom Lehrer, Lenny Bruce, Victor Borge, Phil Silvers et all... To me, the America tradition of "Roasting" someone is a bit weird...!!

When the US program M. A. S. H. first came to the UK in the late 1970s, it was broadcast without the laughter track. It was excellent, the British didn't need to know when to laugh. Then again, maybe we couldn't afford to buy the laughter track 😂

Obviously her list is a subjective list and the comments quite general. I have watched a few episodes of Only Fools & Horses, a massive hit here, but never really made me laugh (except for the obvious classic bits) But I would never describe it as a favourite. Never watched more than a few seconds of Gavin & Stacey. Never watched Seinfeld. Never watched Friends. Yet, I did find Soap funny, I found Mork & Mindy funny, and often laughed at parts of The Big Bang Theory. Is it that they are closer to British Humour? I loved Till Death us do Part, a program written by a Catholic with the main character played by a Jewish Actor who often made comments about Jews (which the Zionists hated). British, mostly, don't give a flying fig about who you take the Pxss out of as long as it is funny. but it would never run in the USA - Though they did try to copy it with All in the Family, which I also found a little funny in parts. - Comedy is Personal

To me comedy/humour is like food - sometimes you want your meal 'writ large' will laugh-tracks and slapstick aplenty, other times you really need something dry and piquant. All food is welcome here ! Thanks JJ as usual a thought provoking vid.

Buster Keaton probably isn't a great example of deadpan comedy to Brits, but certainly when Oliver Hardy breaks the fourth wall and looks at the camera when Stan Laurel does something stupid that's more popular in the UK (certainly with the older generations).

Here’s a subtle bit of humour I used the other day. A friend decided not to wear a (piss-take) t-shirt that I had bought him to work. He said that he thought it might offend some people. Given the nature of the T-shirt I thought it was the right decision. However, what I said was “How unusually sensitive of you”. I think this is funny because: A - it implies that he generally lacks sensitivity, B - it implies that although he was sensitive enough to make this decision, he wasn’t willing to wear my present to work (i.e. prioritised his colleagues over me and Mr Fucking Sensitive had no problem telling me this). C - it was said with a straight face, with a voice suggesting slight surprise. He’s Lithuanian and completely gets this humour.

Seinfeld is boooooorrrrrrrriiiiiiinnnnnng and Jerry is utterly unfunny and unlikable, feel the same about Larry David and CYEnthusiasm... they're trying to be funny, but just not. Like SNL just not funny. In friends the Gellers are defo Jewish, Ross teaches his son about Hannukah, I think Rachel Green is also supposed to be culturally jewish (they grew up together, her name is Rachel and in the flashbacks/alt realities there are some pretty unpleasant nose job gags) Joey is Italian so Catholic not WASP, just white and Phoebe doesn't know her heritage as she's discovering her adoption etc., throught the series... So as to the 'Jewish' thing being why we don't like those shows. As above we also don't like SNL and {most of} your chat show things even those hosted by Brits. Its that there is a specific American Jewish coastal culture which we don't have over here. There are various, multiple and diverse Jewish communities, and Jewish based comedies (Friday Night Dinner, Leon the Pig Farmer) but the NY/LA Jewish schtick (yiddish see what I did there) doesn't translate. Some people still 'say' they like Woody Allen, its so funny, clever, witty, social crit blahlabh bleeeeuuuurgh- but I never got it (again not funny and don't get the culture/weird little character he 'plays') and I certainly don't consume the outputs of r@pists, particularly those of children, and even more so of children in their families, at least until they are charged and ideally convicted so can't make money off it ... don't care if its Allen or Errol Musk, if you feck and impregnate your daughters you're not for me thank you.

As a Guardian reader myself, the source of the writing about Seinfeld, the idea that we don't find Seinfeld funny because it's Jewish is pathetic. Here's some Jews that have had big comedic careers in Britain: Matt Lucas, Stephen Fry, Sacha Baron Cohen, Maureen Lipman, Miriam Gargoyles, Peter Sellers, Warren Mitchell, David Baddiel and Marty Feldman. That's just off the top of my head and these represent comedy from the 1950s onwards.

re: Jews - I think it's just that Jewishness is not a big thing, it's not funny or sad, we just don't get it. It's like making a comedy around the fact that some people have brown hair - so? And?

UK Red Dwarf Pilot: "Three million years?! I've still got that library book!" US Red Dwarf Pilot: "Three million years?! My baseball cards must be worth a fortune!" Lister in the UK was self depreciating at this moment, thinking about how much he owes the library in late fees. Where as the US Lister is looking for financial gain. A very common difference in US remakes...

I think it just that the comedy has taken different paths. British humour is more subltle, black, sarcastic and understated. American humor seems to be more in your face with jokes having to be almost spelled out to the audience. Myself I do not get a lot of American humor. Robin Williams was funny, Jim Carey also [he may be Canadian?] but they are both manic like they are on speed. Not sure of what Americans would make of say The League of Gentlemen
