Midge Ure famously co-founded Band Aid / Live Aid with Bob Geldof. Also lead singer of Ultravox, No 1 single with Vienna. Pronounce his name like You-er. Dire Straights and Sting are from Newcastle, so both Mark and Sting are Geordies. Sting played the Mod "Ace Face" in the film Quadrophenia. A "Face" is someone of note in the Mod world. It's why the Small Faces (Mods and not very tall) are called that. Then became just The Faces after Rod & Ronnie (tall) joined. I think "Brothers in Arms" was the first album on CD. I bought it at the time. British directors were everywhere at the time and later, I'm sure Britney's "Hit me Baby, One More Time" was a British director. Caused a stir in puritan America. Mr Knopfler has also written music (and maybe more) about Jeremiah Dixon famous for the Mason-Dixon line in America. Jeremiah Dixon was also from the North East of England and lived around the mid 1700's. I wonder if Map Men have done anything about it ? PS: Hats off to the Dire Straights drummer, the opening drum section before that famous guitar riff kicks in is just amazing.

A couple of those stills of Mark and Sting together are from a jam they did in, I think, Switzerland, with two other legends, Phil Collins on drums and Eric Clapton on 2nd guitar.

it was Midge Ure (from ultravox and more) and Bob Geldof (boomtown rats) who wrote Do They Know It's Christmas for the Ethiopian Famine relief, which then inspired We are the world and the Global concert the next summer called Live Aid. (worth watching)

Wow, Police and Sting, thank you John Peel. then again, as well, thank you Old Grey Whistle Test. (Anyone remember it used to start at odd times and for no fixed time? When they used to drag some band from a local pub and put them on TV to fill up a few minutes? Absolute TV GOLD!) Money for Nothing - evenings spent watching this in the pub at the corner of Lordship Lane and Roundway, N17 where Paul Young had played in the late 70's; used to see him on the way home from school we used to laugh at him.... then we saw him on TV! Damn.. (like the time our school mate told me and my mate to come see a band who were friends of his bro. Told us their name was Adam and the Ants. We beat him up. Then. Poor Nesbitt..) Great tale of the song!

For what is probably Sting's funniest acting role, see the SNL skit "The Sinatra Group", where he does an impression of a surly Billy Idol, sneer and all. The late Phil Hartman played Sinatra.

The album on CD was the first to have a DDD Spars code, meaning it was recorded digitally, mixed digitally and mastered digitally. This mean that the CD sound quality had zero hiss, and was crystal clear. It was a massive upgrade in clarity from cassette and vinyl. I remember being blown away after I bought my first CD player and this album on the same day.

I love the line “wish Sting was here” oh he’s here on vocals! Serendipity. I Remember seeing the music video for money for nothing and was blown away. I hate it that people say it’s dated. I think it represents that time and the quality of the graphics shouldn’t be judged but revered as genius. The video would look 💩 if made using current technology. I didn’t have access to MTV just top of the pops so at first I was confused as a kid and wasn’t into it. But as I got older it’s become a fave. And I love the guitar rift so memorable. Great to hear the true story of the song & Stings involvement wow never knew that. Often the origins/meanings/collaborators(unknown) of many songs are completely unique and mind blowing. Great story and ever better reacting to it from your point of view with your music engineering background. Great work🎉 love from Southend Uk to LA USA.

The company who made the video went on to make the TV series ReBoot and the two workers from the music video had a cameo in it, being lovingly killed off by their more advanced animated friends. Reboot was epic.

There was a lot of speculation that the "George" and "Harry" mentioned in Sultans of Swing referred to Harry Vander and George Young, but I think that's a bit of nonsense as the George and Harry in the song sounded very down on their luck and I doubt Vander and Young were ever short of a quid.
@onbedoeldekut15159 күн бұрын
The riff only sounds peculiar because the pickups are out of phase slightly, and it's mostly just doublestops played with the fingers and thumb (without a plectrum). And it sounds best on a 24.75 scale length guitar, 25.5 is slightly too long.

i'd love to hear someone with your musical knowledge react to Hi Ren by Ren This is what Sinead O’Connor wrote after hearing Hi Ren: Holy motherfuckin SHIT! Someone just showed me this at the weekend. This Archangel from like, twelfth heaven or somewhere, has only gone and made the entire history of songwriting and performing look like a three year old's birthday party at Burger King. Every song and or artist in history even Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, NWA, Ice Cube, and even Bob Dylan, is officially relegated to class B. As are every actor in history or legend: living or dead, male or female. We all are now defunct. i presume you've heard of sinead god rest her soul RIP
