I do not polish my movements. I stripped it down, cleaned all pivots and oiled it. I like the original look. In the old days, clocks were not for ornamentation. Repairs were done with great economy.

Right now, I have three. The first one was given to me. The second and third, I bought for parts. It's very frustrating to try to interchange parts, because each one of my movements uses a different type of time side motor and they do not interchange. The chime side motors all the same, at least what I have found so far. So beware when hunting down movements for spares.

I just checked the resistance of my chime side motor. It's 1.35K ohms. See how much you get. Mine might not be healthy either, but it does work. It's a miracle any of them are still operating!

The Achilles Heel of these clocks is the driven gear shaft just off of the motor. There is a huge change in ratio at this gear and it has the full load of the chime train on it. On the other end of the shaft is the gathering wheel, which advances out the rack teeth. The bushing on the motor side is worn on every one I have seen. In fact, I have mine apart right now awaiting a bushing replacement. I farm out my bushing work.

Correction. That gear is not adjustable. The hour hand is moved to the correct number of chimes just like any other.

Check above the scrubber housing by lowering it and turning the power off. Make sure the hose running to the liquid delivery nozzle has not disconnected. It is a clear vinyl hose. Make sure you have the power off.

Three things have to happen at the same time. All three ends have to be in the right positions. The heart-shaped cam must let the sensor finger drop into correctly positioned time wheel at the exact moment the stop pin comes around and hits against the lock. This can many times be accomplished by leaving the gear out that is closest to the outer edge of the the frame. You then time the remaining gears, then slip the final gear in by loosening the plate nuts just enough to spread them and sneak the last gar into position.

I just went to take one of these apart and when I went to separate the plates it hung up and the gears dumped out all over. I am having a bit of trouble trying to figure out what goes where. I have the time side working, and have the chime side together except for the levers but I have an extra gear and cant figure out how to get it in there or where it even goes. Do you have any pictures or videos of the whole thing from the side so I can see what I am doing wrong?

I just figured it out. I just realized the gear that goes to the motor isn't the one I thought it was. Its in now. Now I just have to figure out the levers and then get it timed. Do you have any information on how to time this movement?
@markl.bardenwerpersr.7925
@markl.bardenwerpersr.7925 Жыл бұрын
The movement has many attributes of a traditional one. Several gears on the time side must be replaced in the exact rotational position, or the movement either won't lock or it won't unlock at the right moment. I did not take this one apart that far. I tend to be conservative with my work. If it ain't broke, don't fix it is one of my mottos. Electric clock movements don't seem to be under the stress that spring clocks endure, so they tend to have less wear in the pivots. It is wise to not take them that far apart unless you have good knowledge of clocks in general.

well I just bought it at an antique store and the note on it says that it does not run. I do have some electronics skills and have no fear of testing it out and fixing it if I can. So far I have just been researching the internet for similar experiences and tips and I don't want to jump into it too fast and mess something up. So if you have any initial advice that might help that would be great, and as I get into it I might have some actual detailed questions. thanks

@@indianabaloo The clock utilized simple pole motors for power, one for time and one for strike. While it normally requires three power sources for a traditional quarter hour striking clock, Sessions utilized two gathering pallets to control the rotation of a drum to operate the chime hammers along with a cam and lever on the back, which takes the quarter hour hammers in and out of play. Both motors are powered at all times, though the time motor is constantly moving and the chime motor spins only when the stop mechanism releases it. It's a truly unique hybrid.
