How did the gaskets hold up? If they dont leak im buying the ultimate set. Im not a fan of cork.
@DTMinimax
@DTMinimax Күн бұрын
I believe they would work great if the cover was bolt on, but they failed completely. I had to go back to Scotts method. Cut a regular cork gasket seal the two parts together with the gray RTV, glue the gasket to the cover with the RTV, then oil the gasket and put a bead of RTV in the bottom corner on the cover and gasket and put it on. Not a single leak. The other one leaked before I got to the fuel island. I was certainly hoping since they’re washable.

Regarding my other comment, did you make a video talking about the cost of getting a kit vs. sourcing your own materials? I couldn't find one but was wondering if you had the cash in your pocket and were going to start building, would you still source the materials yourself?
@DTMinimax
@DTMinimax 14 күн бұрын
I estimated that I saved about $2,000 but at the cost of about 100 hours of additional build time. If I didn’t have such great access to the lumber, and 45 minutes from Aircraft Spruce, that savings would have disappeared in a hurry in freight cost alone. So I would have definitely gone with the kit.

That's pretty cool Dennis. Those look nice and I am glad to finally see how you were gonna close that gap. On a side note, since my RV-8 dream is dead, I am considering just building a 1550V-max. If for no other reason than to just have something to do. I'll probably won't keep it in a hangar but make it something I can trailer and road trip then explore areas of interest with. I mean, I'm just disgusted with the cost of aviation right now and have no desire to spend every penny I have building an airplane. 🤦‍♂

We know the head nuts are at least 18 ft/lb, but what if they are at 25 or 30? Wouldn't the wrench click for all those levels of tightness? FYI the rocker adjusting screws are supposed to be offset to the side just a little. This is supposed to help with valve rotation to reduce wear.
@DTMinimax

One of them turned a little. Just have to trust that Scott got them right when he built the engine. Are you suggesting that I should have loosened them and then re-torqued?
@philipmanwaring3491
@philipmanwaring3491 Ай бұрын
@@DTMinimax To be absolutely certain that you have only 18 ft/lbs and no more the nuts should be loosened (only one at a time) and re-torqued to 18. Most people do not do this, which is probably OK but just had to mention. Perhaps at 50 hours you could do a re-torque. If you do re-torque, definitely re-check the valve lash.

Great vid. You’ve got s as 1/2 VW just like mine…. Even the chrome plating on the tappet covers! Your stall speed seems high, though I’m not sure what a mph is. I’m sure my Minimax had a stall speed around 25 knots indicated, and it was pretty much at the designed weight. At the time i built there was no 1/2 VW version…I had to modify. So my designed empty weight was as for a Rotax 2 stroke engine. My prop was a 56” (dia)x 22” pitch and rpm (static WOT) was 3200. I built light…the Minimax was my second homebuilt plane. My climb rate was ok with just the fwd fuselage fuel tank full. It was pretty woeful (ie. altitude stays the same as you wait for the curvature of the earth to give you greater distance above ground) when I was fully loaded with 65l of fuel and underwing camping gear. This was my first powered aircraft (previously I was into gliding), so the poor climb performance didn’t worry me…i just found a thermal and climbed up in that. If you want I can hunt around for summer pics…but these are all chemical, not digital, as it was all last century. I currently have & fly a Bert Sisler SF2A I built in the late 1990s, a Corby Starlet (vintage 1980s) that I restored, & a Jabiru J200. I’m planning on building a Mulholksnd ‘Legsl Eagle’ 1/2VW powered for my grandson …it has the same wing as the Minimax. Cheers, Mark

I think the Legal Eagle is also a great airplane. It looks like we’re going to have to make a new prop at 56x22 for mine. The 54x24 is just not doing it. The manual says my stall speed should be 33mph so I’m really close to that. I’m heavier than the stock 1100r so I would expect a higher stall number. Sounds like you have some fun airplanes!
