Thank for such a very fine video which came as a revelation to an old DIY-er myself who had no idea why doors are constructed the way they are! I aways thought that panels and edges were just a form of decoration but now I understand how they were devised to prevent wood from expanding and sticking in the door frame and so as door design improved from the simplest plank construction. I have been struggling with the problem of just getting a door made to measure for a non standard low doorway in an old house and was uncertain whether I just needed a frame and a lump of solid wood and why it was so difficult to just take a standard door and cut it down. Now at least I have some understanding of what is entailed in the construction and the need for accuracy and the different forms of jointing. Luckily I have a friend who understands the basic construction and engineering skills involved and who will help me but without your video it would have remained a mystery.

I have some insulation material.. one side is shiny & the other kinda has a yellow cotton candy like 3 inch soft material. Would this be good for a dog’s house? My neighbors dogs are outdoor only pets & they both suffer in the cold. The owner only provides them with food. Any advice?

Sheesh these make all vinyl windows made in the USA look like something you'd put in a crappy cabin.

I have fixed one previously, we had to remove the old tendon, and insert a smaller diameter cable, install the wedges, and tension the cable. However, in the north, we tension the cable 1 day after the pour, and then a week after that -- so it can get a bit dicey.

Hello another good video but I am surprised that there is no coverage on blinds for European windows. We still do need blinds on these windows and NO I am not referring to the rolling hurricane shutters they use in Europe on the outside. I am talking about blinds/shades that we can quickly operate to let light in with privacy or be completely closed for darkness and privacy. Can you shed any light on options and examples of what works in the US? Thanks.

What siding are you installing? Every siding manufacturer I've researched including Hardie, vinyl, LPS smartside, and aluminum require continous support behind the siding. Your video's installatioin would void the warranty for them all. I recently spoke to the field tech support guy at Plygem Mastic who said that fanfold insulation needed to be applied over the furring strips to maintain the warranty, but I can't find any specific information in their literature to support this.

I can hear the yelling from the gun owner faction about metric used here. What are 88 mm's? Well, you have the 8 mm bullets, don't you? That times 11=88 mm. See? Metric is easy.

You call them High Performance Windows, and we call them windows. Lolz. This is standard in the entirety of Europe. How come a highly developed country such as the US uses window tech from 1752?

I've seen passive std homes with double wall 2 x 4 separated by 6" and the entire wall cavity is blown full of insulation. As he sais, it's hard to get decent 12" wide lumber. Using smaller dimensions, responsibly, would make the walls a fair bit cheaper to build, but also use younger trees and use them more efficiently. For the windows, I think we should consider insulated shutters at night as you can't see much outside anyway. Even with the best windows, they only lose at night. These could be engineered to be decent in appearance, but having an R30+ shutter covering all that glass at night one would think would make a difference. A dream of mine is to see a subdivision with no services, except garbage at. Each home would be a closed loop, producing/handling their own electricity, water and sewage. Subdivisions are low density yielding limited taxes per unit area, but require miles and miles of pipe and electrical runs which cost a fortune.

Good presentation. You took a longer time to explain what you are presenting. That improved your talk!. I have made several exterior doors with mortise and tenon with eastern red cedar. I used the technique you showed and these doors are strong. I did use round pegs and they were hard to install. I will use faceted ones next time.

The piece at 10:30 is the way to go. Metal and plastic are not bad as frame material but when it comes to longevity and functionality, wood is what you want to have. It's easy to maintain, repair and adjust for a loooong time.

I'm not sure I like the 4" overcut on the tail reduction where it meets the seat cut outside the wall sheathing. It's sloppy if they were to run tails exposed, since it's soffited it doesn't matter. They may as well have went exposed, way nicer look.
