Only thing I disagree here with is the second clip he showed. In the attacking third...from my opinion the attacking team played the ball backwards and I'd prefer to give them that free kick 10 yards outside the box than a throw in damn near as a corner. Should've talked about the poor "advantage" the ref gave rather than his position

I met Terry at USYS Regionals. I had an excellent game on a U-17 match and was recommended for a higher game. This did not go over well with some of the higher ups. They decided to send Terry Vaughn over to observe me with the goal of failing me. I had a great game and worked my butt off. Terry spent 1 hour on the de-brief and by the end convinced everyone and the assessor that I had missed one foul and ultimately failed the game. Terry was a jerk.

Yellow, for reckless play. He was very late, with no chance at getting the ball and threw himself with no regard for the keeper's safety. But, his legs were bent and I didn't see studs up, so there isn't enough for serious foul play nor violent conduct

Can’t even see if he got the ball or not. Plus I don’t see the referee signal for the clocked to be stopped( if it’s high school soccer). Also, it looks like the referee was talking to the goalkeeper( taking his attention). PLUS the ball was rolling when he kicked it in the goal!😂

i've been looking into what exactly constitutes a "foul" in soccer for the last 3 days and honestly i still dont really get it . I hear "excessive force" a lot but that's awfully vague. It should be like basketball which is "the defender has to make a play on the ball , if contact is made with of the offense it's a foul." Could anyone help me better understand ?

Hard to answer succinctly. There are seven direct free kick fouls: kick, trip, tackle, push, jump, charge, strike. If there is one of these types of contact, it might not be a foul because it is too minimal to stop play. Sufficient contact to be labeled "careless" rises to the level of a foul. Contact that is "reckless" is a foul and earns a cautionary yellow card. Contact with "excessive force" is a foul and results in a sending off with a red card. Basketball is similar where contact has to disrupt speed, timing balance and rhythm to be a foul. Contact that doesn't do that happens every play but isn't called. Then you get things like flagrant ones and twos which are equivalent to yellow and red cards. They involve contact more severe than a common foul and can lead to the player being ejected. There is a lot of art to officiating. Part of the job is to keep the game flowing smoothly. Calling too many fouls, fouls up that goal. On the other hand, part of the job is to keep things safe. If players are escalating, then the referee has to start clamping down and calling the game more tightly. So something what was a play on in the first ten minutes might be a foul later. A simple foul early might be a yellow late if the players are getting out of control.

Not. Two of three of the forwards for red were in an offside position, but unfortunately for the AR, the one who played it was not.

I think these videos are great. I would love to see a presentation on assessing and dealing with contact when players are arriving at the same time (50-50's); e.g. goalie-attacker situations, bouncing balls in the penalty area (defender v. attacker 50-50), and on the pitch of course.

I see the red player reaching around the white player in an attempt to turn him or gain some sort kind of advantage for the ball; i.e. I see a foul and plenty of contact on the white player's upper body. Subsequently, I see the white player throwing/pushing the red player off of him and to the ground (whatever you call that hip-turning move he did). If the AR already called the ball out of bounds (i.e. the restart was already a corner kick before the following action by the players), then I'm okay with the corner. If the ball was still in play, however, then I would have discussed awarding the free kick to the white team as I think the red player was the first to foul. If the referees are deciding that the white player's foul was the more serious foul, then I can live with that, but then I would have advocated for a yellow (if it was that bad).

I see Red #6 making a fair challenge for the ball, but I also see a momentary attempt to hold or "pull" blue #4 - even though it appears to me to be a bit trifling. Therefore, I don't think red #6 is deserving of a caution for his play. In fact, had blue #4 not stopped to push red #6, I would have waited to see how play would have developed before calling red #6 for a foul. That said, blue #4 is lucky he receives only a caution for "pushing," when technically he should receive a RED for violent conduct. "Pushing" should only be called in the act of playing the ball (i.e. in the act of playing soccer). Blue #4 clearly was not "playing the ball" when he fouled red #6 - so by rule I think this is a RED card accordingly to Law 12 and the spirit of the game. It's just not soccer; and if blue #4 was sent off, then he'd have some time to reflect and perhaps plan a different response the next time he gets annoyed by an aggressive opponent. (This is great stuff BTW, I hope others share their interpretations.) P.S. If this match WAS getting out of hand, and both sides were playing "chippy," then the CR missed a silver-platter opportunity to send off an overly-aggressive player. No one could have questioned his decision to send off blue #4. Sometimes being "nice," only invites more unsafe play.

@DeanRedfearn 5 жыл бұрын
I think you're right, technically, but I think the referee makes the right decisions with respect to game management. The game is bubbling over -- not giving red a caution would result in blue frustration. He does a great job of taking some time and letting the moment fizzle out a little. Two yellows calms the situation here. No need to send blue off in my opinion but I can see the argument.
