I applaud your choice of rifle and shooting position. You captured the spirit of the challenge. I’m not totally convinced the Savage Axis was the right rifle to make your point on modern manufactured firearms being superior to rifles of the past but I understand your point. We are living in a time where state of the art manufacturing and materials are giving us excellent firearms at an affordable price point with several examples of ordinary hunting rifles that will do MOA out of the box. Overall an excellent video. Thank you for sharing.

It’s great when doing the close rank beginners drill, to once you reach the terminus of your range space: simply about face and run it back. In this way you can get a bunch of reps in quickly, keep the heart rates up and actually get guys into the groove of communication while breathing heavy; all while have one or two guys that are closely critiquing (muzzles, cover, and movement). This is one that should be run many many times over to a muscle memory level.

Last thought. I appreciate the comment on how modern "cheap" firearms are far more capable than the firearms used by heroes of yesteryear. So very true. Our community is afflicted with the desire for the very best equipment - as if that will somehow win the day. It won't. The Jedburgh Teams of WW2 (predecessors to modern day Green Berets) carried revolvers and Sten guns to carry out their heroic missions. The Marine Raiders of WW2 carried M1 Garand and M1 Carbines. The SAS and SBS of WW2 carried Lee-Enfield bolt action rifles. Yet, all of these elite units carried out missions that are still sung in praise today. The idea that the credit for these daring and successful missions goes to the equipment these men carried is grossly misplaced. Instead, it was their vision of leadership, their competency of training, and their daring ability to be at the right place and the right time that deserve praise. The choice of bang-bang stick be damned.

The future of small arms accuracy will likely place less emphasis on MOA. With weapon optics like the Smart-Shooter SMASH being adopted by the US military, this allows a novice to pick up any service rifle and score hits on human torso sized targets at 600 meters. The AI component calculates various factors - distance, drop, wind speed, humidity, and minute of angle. The inexperienced Soldier squeezes the trigger and places the target into a defined circle while the AI waits until the factors align. Only when all is aligned will the AI-driven SMASH optic allow the weapon to fire. 1 Shot. 1 Hit. 600m. In theory, it wouldn't matter if the weapon had an MOA of 10, as long as this was programed into the SMASH optic. Of course, in reality that would mean longer lag times for all factors to align. So, in reality the tighter the MOA, the faster the shot. But you get the idea.

I agree in principle with what you're saying. This was proved when Chris Kyle's widow trounced the reigning NRA champion in a tactical competition some years back using a TrackingPoint rifle which does the calculations that you mentioned. Mrs. Kyle isn't a competition level shooter, it was the rifle. These devices function by gathering all the known variables (range, atmospherics, target motion, etc.), calculating the ballistic solution, and then firing when the barrel alignment will yield a hit on the target. Same as fighters with computed bomb/gun sights have been using for decades. The key is, it computes based on known factors. They put the center of the rifle's GROUP on the designated point at target range. So if the rifle is a 2 MOA rifle, you would have a roughly thirteen inch group centered on the designated point at six hundred yards. It cannot compute for random variables, such as those that cause group spread. A ten MOA group would indeed be centered on the designated point at six hundred yards, but it would be an approximately sixty three inch group thus yielding much fewer hits on the torso sized target than the two MOA rifle.

@@SharpsShtr - Fair point. Accuracy still matters even when AI technology removes the field craft from marksmanship. My point is to say that the human art of field craft leans just as heavily on technology plus human understanding, whereas AI-driven technologies are rendering the human art to the realm of "unnecessary" for military application. Soon, marksmanship will be as relevant to the battlespace as swordsmanship. Sure, it is still REALLY IMPRESSIVE to witness a master swordsman, or sword maker, or both. We can marvel at the years spent perfecting this craft - and frankly, that alone makes it more rare and valuable. But from the perspective of mass produced industrialized warfare? It's soon obsolete.

@@christopherlarsen7788 No arguments there. I've flown fighters utilizing both manual (iron sights) and computed delivery systems. There used to be some really, really good manual bombers, but they were few and far between. I was not amongst them. 100 percent I'd take a computed delivery, or rifle, any day of the week. Unfortunately, we civilians are unlikely to see the really cool stuff anytime soon. So we must continue to improve our odds the old fashion way.

Les, definitely one of your more interesting videos - on several levels. MILITARY ACCURACY: For all practical purposes, modern military firearms require a minimum of 4 MOA to reliably hit an enemy target at 300 meters. Any barrel (or bullet) incapable of this standard is rejected by the US military. The newest XM7 shooting the 6.8mm SIG round meets this accuracy standard, whereas the US Army 6.5mm LICC round manages sub 2 MOA for precision. For historical reference, the Soviet AKM held just 5 MOA on a sled, and more practically 6 MOA when fired by a trained marksman. For this reason, the AK series earned a unfair reputation as "inaccurate" - but only out to 300 meters and beyond. The AK was perfectly well suited for fighting out to 200 meters.

Since you weren't shooting .30-'06, you weren't really Fudding. 😜 I like the way you ended up capturing the true nuance of the challenge; just shoulder and shoot, without extensive preparation. Folks don't realize just how HARD those sub-MOA precision shooters work to get their results!

Several friends have bought those rifles, one with the bundled cheapo scope, and they have shot way above what was expected. One odd thing happened though. One was used during a class and as the day progressed the groups start walking to one side. It was a nice sunny day, hot with little wind. Turns out the sun was hitting the one side of the plastic stock which heated it up and warped it into the barrel. Truly bizarre. With an aftermarket laminated stock and a $250 Cabela's brand scope that rifle got the shooter past 1,500 yards in a long range competition. You can do good work with those Savages.

Let's up the fun. Instead of shrapnel, I use a long lasting incendiary (proprietary) gel. The ignition point is fairly low, it's designed to destroy machines, it's not an AP grenade. Warm it up enough, or pass some current through it, and it'll cut through expensive components without secondary damage. Shove it into a tailpipe, fire it out of a cannon into an armored target, and you get more splash damage at hotter temps that just burn and burn. It's especially effective against naval vessels because water only pisses it off more, and the gel sticks and splashes.
@HankMcGurk
@HankMcGurk 22 күн бұрын
A little of this sticky stuff loaded into one of your bullets, the primer pops off the low ignition point and totally disables anything from a .22 to whatever you want. Bad time to have a misfire, your gun melts in your hands, and probably sprays you with the ejection. Minimally you lose the weapon, easily you could have a casualty. It'd be wise not to touch my ammunition or my weapons. Sure you could try to trace the weapon, it's a bit too specialized for domestic use.

Just found this when I was dinking around on KZbin. I have a Sterling AR-180 that I happened across back in '94; almost new condition, Sterling manufacture. I absolutely love it. And, yes, modifying AR mags is very, very hit & miss. Got lucky and found some original AR-18 20rnd ones online in the late 90's, and 1 original Sterling AR-180 30rnd one at a gun show. If they can be found, Thermold made an AR-180 30rnd mag through the 90's, not sure when they finally stopped. I have several, and they work great.

Please test under visible light as you plan. Please view under NVGs for IR spectrum, as I believe RIT dye is bright, as another viewer mentioned. Also show under thermal imaging! We must learn to fight in all spectrums! Maybe use plastics paint by spray and brush on areas that did not take dye, and tiger-stripe the webbing to make it nonlinear and blend !! Cool! I will dye mine! 🫡

My thought would be to buy some tan camo cloth, and test dye it, but small brush the dye on one color at a time. Set it, then rinse off. That way you could try loam, and greens and black in areas on the tan material. Another thought that is common on rifles now is to dribble Dawn on the rifle in fine patterns, and spray paint. You might try the soap dribble technique to prevent dye from attaching!!! PLEASE... remember when you are done with the cloth, satisfy yourself that it is camo in visible light at near and far, then IR/NVIS at near and far, and finally check its thermal image while worn, near and far and mitigate. Expect to be hunted in all three electromagnetic spectrums!!! Some dyes light up like glow in the dark under NODs or IR illumination! Party on! I bought three of these vests! Great content!!! 🫡

Straps on top of the vest were also for various other things like "soeksteekstokke" liberally translated as landmine probe sticks. A favorite use of one of the 2L water bottle pouches on the back was to put two teabags in it as the water would get very hot when walking patrol under the South African sun. Our sleeping bag and tarp were rolled up tight and strapped upright with thge side straps over the two back pouches. Generally the bottom pouch was used to carry our Ratpack aka MRE. We did indeed carry smoke grenades to execute a FLOT maneuver (Forward Line Own Troops) when providing guidance to an arial strafe of the enemy in close contact. Jeez I cant believe I still remember this stuff. 88/89 was a long time ago man. The Battle Jacket was hot to wear but you could comfortably run in it. In fact we used to do regular fitness marches/runs in them with full ammo, water and rifle.

One of the reasons to buy more quantity is to cover for family and friends who you may NEED or want to have better equipped, but they won't prioritize it themselves. Usually, you can't afford to go high end for that quantity. It is hard enough to get those people to buy a little ammo to train with. And before you say "oh well, just tell 'em 'sucks to be you,' when they need it", you may REALLY NEED them to help you or someone else out when that time comes. And what about future generations, if some things get banned, or sources dry up.

Your belt seem to be extended to the max?! There is two sizes of it. Looks like you´ve the smaller one. The large size is approx 4 inches longer (one size is 100 cm, the other is 110 cm). The larger sized belt helps to bring the rear attachmend for the harness and the belt buckle at the front centered. On top of that it gains more space for the pouches. Here in Germany is a actual flood of these GB webbings at the moment. You can see offers all over the place. That means, somebody opened up a big container in sime warehouse somewhere, and supplied all wholesaler here 😅😅 You can get a used, basic 5 pice set for under 20 Euro. That's the best viewing I've seen of that webbing, and I served in the SADF. I was in the Armoured Corps in 1989/1990, so we were issued the old canvas webbing as well as the old metal helmet we called a 'staaldak', meaning metal roof in English. The plastic inner, which the staaldak fitted over, was called a 'Dooibie', an Afrikaans mangling of the English word 'Derby', being another name for a bowler hat. The dooibie was worn by itself as head covering right through basic training. It kinda looked like a cross between a Yank WWII era helmet and a German Fallshirmjäger helmet.

I’m not, nor will I ever be a sub 1 MOA shooter. Most of my shooting requires 4 MOA…and I can be very consistent with a higher end rifle or a PSA rifle (well within 4 MOA rifles)….so I honestly choose a PSA as a price/performance compromise . Has been enough to get me through many Brutality matches. I have upgraded components (trigger), but as Les can attest, I’m consistent with a pretty stock PSA rifle.

Yes. 'Good Enough' and 'As Good As' are not the same! If the shooter's skill is up to the tip-top tier equipment, that's a good investment. Otherwise, consider putting those funds into less-expensive gear and lots of ammo with quality training and practice, then work up. ALSO, budget rifles can be upgraded as parts wear and the shooter's needs are clarified!

Im glad that someone has a more reasonable take on this stuff. Most people get caught in the hype and buy the really expensive gucci gear when they could get by with a mid teir version of what they want use the saving for ammo, training or other equipment like medical. My take on it is somewhere in the middle have mid teir gear thats good enough but isn't cheap or expensive and use the savings to either get better gear if i see something im using isn't up to my expectations or get a second of something. Its that middle ground thats the hardest thing to balance.
