They're doing extremely well now though. KOF XV is great, new Fatal Fury in the works after almost 20 years, KOF XIII is getting re released with rollback, Samurai Shodown is getting rollback, hell even Capcom is interested in another crossover fighter with SNK

Back in school my best pal had a snes , I had a megadrive. We would go to local arcades, and the Neo Geo console was this mythical unicorn that we could only imagine; we'd never seen one, import only, obscene price tag for the console and carts. Amazing machine, great times

Just picked up an mvsx, and even tho I was never a fan of fighting games, I am an animation professional and love love love SNK for their amazing imagery. The Metal Slug titles that came pre loaded with the unit, make the cabinet worth the price imo. But the addition of shoot em ups was entirely missed..Blazing Star or don pachi style scrollers were my personal favorite kind of arcade games back in the day

It was made for hotels but then gamers complained they couldn't buy one anywhere so they started selling to the masses. It was cheaper than an Amiga and the games price came down a lot each year.

If it didn't cost an arm and a leg, it wouldn't have been the Neo Geo. There was no way you were gonna get the exact arcade experience at home in the early 90s for the price of a Genesis or SNES, otherwise other companies would have. SNK marketed the Neo Geo as the Rolls Royce of gaming. It always was gonna be niche. But considering the AES sold a million units and it was still getting new games until 2004, I'd call that a success.

What made it less successful was the 3D consoles, especially the Dreamcast.

The home console (AVS) was never meant to compete with other consoles, it was a luxury item for those who wanted the most powerful hardware and could afford it, considering it was made in limited numbers it actually sold well at least for a good while, so it succeeded in what it set out to do. The arcade system (MVS) on the other hand WAS extremely successful, it didn't last 14 years for nothing.

Yeah the DECO came first but people forget about it because only a few games for it like Burgertime were successful and those ended up getting their own cabinets anyway.

SNK in the 90s was just awesome! I’ve only just begun to really appreciate SNK. I never heard of them until around 2005 or so. When they ported some of their games like World Heroes on PS2! That was my first exposure to the Gods of the Arcade, SNK!

Adjusted for inflation, the Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System would be about $1,250 USD in 2022, and each game cartridge between $417 USD and $521 USD. Let that sink in..

$600 a console, and $250 a game, for $850 total? Ridiculous. That was a SNES , a Sega Genesis, and 9 games. Maybe that's why I haven't meet 1 single person who ever owned a NEO GEO.

That's why SNK was kept alive only in the arcades; it would've never been able to compete successfully in the home console market... Even if the systems were FAR inferior to the Neo Geo! <: P
