Hi, sorry if these are dumb questions but what’s the deck above the 770es? And is it necessary for recording tapes?

Nice tutorial; A good tip is to warm the pickup with a hair dryer before you drop it into the wax (reduces risk of damaging winding), and then remove the glass bowl from the pot so as to cool the wax down a bit (I put it in another pot with cold water in to cool it quicker) and when the was gets a solid skim on top, remove the pickup. This reduces the risk of losing wax from inside the pickup and causing an air lock. I was shown this from a West Australian luthier in the 1980's and I think he used Bees Wax, but I'm not 100% sure on that. The tutorial was very good and should help a lot of first timers do their own wax potting. Kind Regards Chris (Australia)

0:54 These frequency response figures don't make a lot of sense. The lower and upper frequency response for all 3 tape types is determined by a combination of the specific formulation being used and the capabilities of the cassette deck itself. I've had many mid-range hi-fi decks over the years that were flat within 2dB or less from 20Hz to 18kHz or more at the standard -20dB test level with all tape types if the specific formulations were up to the job. One example I can give off the top of my head is an accurately calibrated 3-head Teac V-1050 I still own that's flat within 1dB from 18Hz to 21kHz with a budget TDK FE Type I cassette tape. The same deck performs slightly worse with a TDK MA Type IV.

i think dolby NR was made for prerecorded tapes. I did a test recording a prerecorded tape with NR to a wave file and then using a plugin to decode dolby in the PC. It was a totally diferent experience. It lowered the hiss by 15 Db and it sounded cleared at last. Maybe it's a good wave to restore music that probably is not in streaming platforms

You can’t just record a track with Dolby OFF , then when playing back that track , turn Dolby B or C ON , obviously it’s going to sound awful … Dolby needs to be encoded on your recording , then decoded on playback with the same Dolby .. So first you need to decide which Dolby you want to use on your recording . Assuming you go with Dolby C , you first select and engage Dolby C , then simply record your track as you normally would . Then play back the track leaving the Dolby C on , only Dolby C , not B .. What ever Dolby you recorded (Encoded) your source with , is the same Dolby you use to play it back (decode it) … A typical Cassette Deck is very prone to hiss , it’s almost impossible to get a good recording without hiss without noise reduction. The issue with cassette decks is their limited signal to noise ratio because of their inherent design.

I really like analog spectrum analisers, but I really don't see the point in getting ones with separate channels. Morden music is mixed in such a way, so there is similar information on both channels, otherwise it sounds unpleasant. I think the is much more value in having more frequency bands in total, than having stereo separation

Until what year were such devices produced? Why are there no new ones on offer today?
@TechStuff1Ай бұрын
I don’t remember seeing any equalizers like this (with the spectrum analyzer) after somewhere around 1995. Most eq was eventually integrated into the receiver amps which made these obsolete.

I became an audiophile cause of the quality of sound I got to hear around '93/'94 in my cousin's Sony ES series system. Later I got a Sony compact stereo system that cluld deliver 70 W/channel but the sound quality did not even compare to the ES components. I am glad that Sony ES components are still so highly regarded.

My father gave me the Seiko watch that Bond wore in the 1983 movie Octopussy. The Seiko G757 5020 Sports 100 LCD was really cool for the time and I still have it today. When I was sitting in a movie theater weeks/month later and Roger Moore showed the watch (with an additional LED as a radar), I shouted out loud with excitement “He's got my watch on” .... At the time there were only strange looks from the other moviegoers, today I would be on TikTok 🤣 I should have them cleaned and polished by a professional. They're very expensive these days... And I even have two, because I inherited my father's. I'm pretty sure that my thrifty father didn't spend a fortune on it back then. Since I have now learned that the watch was no longer made in 1983, he must have bought two of them very cheaply at a clearance sale. Good for me. In school i was a hero with that BOND watch.

A year ago I drove 4 hours round trip to snag a CDP-520ES made in 1985 for $50. It needed some repairs, which I did along with a full recap. Now it’s a permanent part of my vintage audio setup. Sounds great and excellent build quality. Now I’m looking at a TC-K444ES II. Might have a complete ES setup eventually.

The biggest problem (besides possible azimuth misalignment between decks) was cassette decks simply not being calibrated correctly at the factory. Two of my brothers bought identical JVC hi-fi cassette decks on the same day in 1977 with consecutive serial numbers in the hope that they'd be able to play back each other's recordings hassle-free. Not only were the azimuths different, but the Dolby level calibration was different on both decks. They'd both play back their own recordings in Dolby B perfectly, but not each others. Being a family of electronics engineers, it didn't take them long to work out what was going on, so a calibration tape was purchased and both decks were calibrated against that. The end result was perfect cross-compatibility between the two decks. Ever since, I have never trusted the factory calibration on any deck and have always calibrated mine before making any potentially precious recordings. The result has been near-perfect cross-compatibility between many decks over several decades when using Dolby B or Dolby C. Dolby C is by far the most transparent of the two due to the spectral skewing technique it uses to combat tape saturation, AKA compression, thus producing far more linear recordings over a far wider frequency range. After careful calibration, both the Teac and Pioneer 3-head decks I have sitting here are capable of recording 20Hz to 20kHz within 1dB at 0dB with a lowly TDK FE cassette tape. Cross-compatibility is excellent, no doubt in large part to both decks having very similar record/playback electronics and identical heads.

All my Sony, Aiwa and Panasonic personal stereos (with the exception of the Sony WM-701C & WM-550C) tracked all my cassettes made on my Sony and JVC decks. Dolby was no problem. Well, Dolby B that is. Dolby C interchanges well between my full sized decks. I have three JVC KD-V6J /TD-V66s, two Sony TC-K555es and a TC-K333es and it matters not what deck recorded what cassette, they all interchange well with C-type encoded cassettes. But the Walkmans can't track Dolby C worth shit. The tolerance is too low for C-type to mis-track. My primary issue was always with pre-recorded cassettes not being able to decode Dobly-B properly, which is likely why most people thought Dolby was crap. Dolby C encoded tapes playback perfectly fine with B-type decoding. This was by design but the end result is the same as if it were a Dolby B tape to begin with. What you cannot do is decode C on a B-type only tape, but you can certainly get B from C.

Hello, it took me 40 years to understand that to use Dolby B - C - S you must record the tape with the Dolby activated and play the tape with the same Dolby recorded. It sounds incredible. 99% of the original sound, without loss. I thought it worked by activating Dolby at any time with any cassette. I was very very wrong.
