I followed the excellent tutorial and got the goop out and the belts in. The good news is that everything runs. The bad news is that there is regular clicking on both decks, in both directions. It is obviously tied to the counter because the clicking is faster when the hub on either deck is spinning faster. There is also a background hum. I've checked all the connections and wiggled things while it was running. So, unfortunately, I have several hours down the drain and a deck that will be going to the dump next week. Absolutely GREAT tutorial ... this has nothing to do with your efforts. It simply shows that sometimes there is more than one problem.

Big thanks for this, a real public service. I really liked that you did this slowly and showed clear images of the belts on and how to just pop them onto the riollers once assembled which others don't spend enough time on. It worked for my sony double cassette tc w490. So happy now going to repair those other decks lying around, keep the best and sell the rest off.

Helped me a lot to fix my TC-WE 835S. Had an issue at first, redid the whole belt thing, this time I paid more attention to a nice looking alignment of the white plastic wheels thingy next to the shorter belt. Reassembled, everything's fine now.

That is a most helpful video indeed. I will try this new knowledge on my TC-WE525 which looks a little different on the inside but it's from around the same time beginning of the 90s so I'm not expecting too many surprises. And you are very brave using your very first tape for the test run on your re-assembled deck. The deck could have done all kinds of bad things to your tape but you just believed in the quality of your work. 👍
@ClausJesup Жыл бұрын
I was mistaken. Seems as if Sony used a lot of different interior designs of cassette decks around this time beginning / mid of 90s and they all required a different approach changing the belts. My TCWE525 is more like the TCWE435 for which there's another video around here, lucky for me. It was quite a piece of work, had to take almost the whole thing apart just to remove the motor and that way get access to the belt. But I learned a lot along the way.

Excellent! Simple, slow step by step instructions and great clear closeups so that one can actually see what's going on. And thanks for not putting any distracting background music throughout like some people do, lol. Good job! I have a Sony TC-WR520 that needs new belts. I've taken it apart to look around in it and just need to get some belts. I'm going to see if mine can disassemble like yours. I too had taken the whole unit out. I'll try it like yours. Also, I didn't know thats what those posts were for on the belts. I assume you found an online repair manual because I never would have figured out how to put the belts on using those posts. I did find a manual with diagrams for mine but it doesn't anything about wrapping around those posts (The manual calls them "claws") and then pushing them off and on the rollers. I wasn't sure what they were for.
@TechStuff13 жыл бұрын
Thanks - glad this was helpful! Believe it or not, I didn’t use the service manual to locate those “claws”. I searched KZbin for about an hour before I finally found a really poor video of someone doing this. Then I knew I had to make my own video, clearly, and in 4K.

I now feel very confident I can fix my hardly ever used Sony dual Stereo cassette deck. I believe I purchased mine in the early 90 also, I have taken it apart to see what was going on and I could see the belt had broken more than likely from just being old and not being used, and knowing that the ribbons just come out of the deceptive clips LOL I didn't want to force them because they didn't have anything that looked like a release pin. Thankfully I decided to look at KZbin and found your video very clear and well recorded Great job! now I will search for belts.

Suggest to adjust tape speed (and high speed dubbing) since the new belts add more tension to the mechanisms.

That’s a good suggestion! I guess I assumed that new belts would “default” itself back the original speed, but I think that an adjustment is in order as you recommend.

When does a tape deck need a belt replacement ?. I recentely got a tape deck/ cd stereo from one of my friends very good condition but he told me he never really used the tape deck only cd player, so do you think it might need just some demagnitizing if the tape audio sounds slowed down?. I recently tried it and the tape deck sounds slowed down. Plz help
@TechStuff13 жыл бұрын
The most common problem with old tape decks are the belts decaying over time. There could be other issues with it, like a failing motor, but the belts are usually the first place to start and is also the least expensive fix.

So I followed the instructions and it turns on, and the motor screams, Ive lubricated the motor, and connected everything as I see it in the video, but it still just eats my tapes. Any suggestions?
@TechStuff13 жыл бұрын
Old belts is the usual culprit with old tape decks, but pinch rollers and capstans also make the tape move. Other than giving those parts a thorough cleaning with some isopropyl alcohol, this type of repair is unfortunately past my skill set.
@SakutoNoSAI3 жыл бұрын
@@TechStuff1 right on, stopped eating the tapes, seems to work, but now the pinch rollers arent engaging lol. Good work tho.
@rickeads6160 Жыл бұрын
A couple of notes to build on this video. This is a Sony TCM190 transport, a very commonly used mechanism in Sony decks. Taking out each of the mechanisms is actually a good practice. The reason is that it is a good idea to remove each of the motors and to lubricate the bearings and to test function. Otherwise they can intermittently squeal. The biggest issue is that many of these have cracked mode gears which must be replaced. Otherwise, even with new belts, the decks can eat tapes and not work consistently. Lastly, all belts are not created equal. Do your homework. I’ve also found that the speed of the decks in these decks is off and can be easily adjusted but you need the right equipment and a good test tape to do that. Otherwise good job. These are worth fixing up.

Some Sony cassette decks are over engineered and it can be a hassle just to replace the belts. Not including if you have to replace a gear or a cog. Idler gear are the worst to work on. Especially if you can't find parts.

well surely the late decks were more economic but I think this is a cheap model itself as most of all double cassetes with no bias and rec level adjustments and no oscillator
