As a member of the public, I think we tend to forget that European armies and the time (1500 to 1700) relied on shot and pike tactics. So while these halberds are for show, the weapon was still seen on the battlefield back then (1200 and 1650).

An extremely gorgeous weapon! Though I do have to wonder about the ownership and how it would have been used. As an ostentatious wall hanger, or a ceremonial guard weapon? Are there any sources to suggest this was anything other than a novelty item? Very much looking forward to some more combination weapons, and Jonathan explaining to confused colleagues what a Bloodborne is

I don't know anything enough about the science, but would the flat metal one side, the free space on the other not mean the bullet was affected by the air and not fly straight? Also, that's such a cool thing to have.

What is this guys accent? it sound at once very Scottish but also French with a splash of German. Also, what cool and informative video, love me a good halberd and I'm a real sucker for decorative stuff that doesn't too badly impact functionality. It's always nice to watch people who really know their stuff.

Ah, Pike and Shot, but without the "and." Also, I REALLY think everyone there needs to introduce themselves properly when doing these videos. For example: "Hello, I'm [insert name] [insert job title] [insert specialism] at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout History."

I can see these used by bodyguards, not only does it scream "I'm rich and have the technology for it to be made, but also the craftsmen spare for a vanity project" and also "I'm rich enough to hire some people who look like they know how to use them", and anyone getting close enough to the person being guarded (6 maybe 5m away if they're liked) will see exactly what they are and know if they try messing about they have a few shots and a Halberd to run into.

One would have to be careful to hold the pan upright on top to fire one barrel, then flip it 180 to fire the other, because the lock on the underside would dump it's priming powder if the pan cover open while it was inverted. One couldn't "give 'em both barrels" at the same time because the under barrel would misfire. I'd also suspect that while one might give some villian a good poke with the pointy bit, you wouldn't want to have to parry an incoming blow from a steel weapon with it, because those locks look fragile...but very very cool, I want one!

Would be a little nervous firing either barrel after actually using the blade on anything.
@julianshepherd2038Сағат бұрын
You would before they were in range of the blade. Unless it is a Hollywood movie where you have to give the other guy a chance to grab the weapon
@Immopimmo50 минут бұрын
Yeah, you'd fire both barrels first, and then you'd use the halberd like a regular halberd. This feels like it would be a good weapon for some nobleman's personal guard.

Two wheel locks on a stick? Everything I've read says that this absolutely did belong to a wealthy individual. While it was certainly a prestigious object in its own right, the thought does come to mind that in it's time, there were still expectations that troops should be led in the field by the chap who was paying them... Well if you were unfit or lacking in military skills, something like this would certainly boost your own morale if you ever had to turn out with the lads! Thought #2: A halberd with "auto extraction"? This is something that on line gaming has been waiting for! 😁 Thanks for showing this one.

So if you managed to get your hands on a 16-17th century gun crossbow (I believe there's a few around), whose area of expertise would that fall under?
@SabrowskyСағат бұрын
I believe not under Jonathan unless said crossbow might be qualified as artillery, as his title is "Keeper of Firearms and Artillery" a crossbow is not a gun and normally not artillery. Now, if you get a ballista or one of those scorpion bolt launchers, which, in my opinion are just big crossbows, that might be his wheelhouse.
@JonathanFergusonRoyalArmouries17 минут бұрын
@@Sabrowsky I believe the reference was to combination arquebus/crossbow weapons which do exist - the Met in New York have one.
@JonathanFergusonRoyalArmouries15 минут бұрын
We tend to default to the edged/impact weapon part of any given combination weapon, and the only gun-crossbow I know of at the Met is really a crossbow first and foremost with a gun barrel buried in the stock and a dog on top. So it would be under my colleague Henry's team (which Iason is part of). But really they fall between stools and require expertise from both teams.

As a ceremonial weapon in the 16th century this would have been a truly incredible spectacle.

Having played and very much enjoyed Indiana Jones, it did make me laugh just how thunderous (it literally echoes off walls) the 'punch' sound is. It's the exact movie sound, where it's partly a thud, partly a slap, and partly the whip-crack - it's VERY distinctive. Oddly, Indy's revolver is practically a hand-cannon, but the SMGs do very little damage - a 25-round magazine will be lucky to kill three guys even if every shot hits.

Love the museum; but I have to say, over $500 for a replica of sauron's mace rendered in fiberglass is kind of insane. I understand it's probably not the easiest thing to manufacture, but I cannot justify paying that much for a literal toy; for $500 I could go and buy at least one real functional replica of a historical mace; but probably more than one, depending on how complex.
@Sarrienne2 сағат бұрын
It's a United Cutlery product, who hold the official licence for LotR replica merchandise. It's this that makes it so expensive. Some of their swords are nice, but they're all just wallhangers. Besides, if this was a real mace made of solid metal, you'd need three people just to lift it...!!
@harleymarshall69292 сағат бұрын
@Sarrienne i understand you can't make the real thing out of metal; I wouldn't want a real replica of sauron's mace rendered in steel; but if I am unable to use it as a mace either way; I'd rather not pay $500 for a plastic display item
@SarrienneСағат бұрын
@@harleymarshall6929 That's entirely your choice. I wouldn't pay the same for Aragorn's sword that would shatter (despite being metal) first time you use it, just as I'd not pay 3.7 million for a 300mph car that can't be driven on the road... But people all sorts of money for display items, which is where this stuff falls. Metal would be too heavy/impractical for display, so they did a fibreglass one that looks real. Same as imitation ivory stuff, where real ivory would be illegal.
