Hi Gina, So enjoying your videos to help me make my own covered buttons. Your videos are so precise with all the information a newbie could possibly need. Thank you so much.Marysia.❤❤

That's really helpful - thank you! Are there any clever ways to work out how long a piece of thread one would need to cover a particular size of ring?
@GinaBSilkworks4 күн бұрын
I tend to use rings between 20 and 25mm, so know from experience I'll need about 2-3m, give or take. I'm afraid I don't have any clever tricks, I tend to just start with about 2 arm's lengths, and figure it out from there! 😉

Excellent video - thank you! I visited your lovely stand at the Knit and Stitch Show at Ally Pally yesterday but was sorry that you weren't there. I run a little craft group in Tenterden, Kent and will be delivering a couple of workshops to get my ladies started on Dorset Buttons

Gina, Thank you so much for such a wondrrful tutorial. I learned the Yorkshire button from you and now trying out this style. Your teaching style is clear and encouraging and you clearly show all the techniques we need to succeed. Thank you for all you do.

Beautiful. Can these actually be used as a button on a sweater?
@GinaBSilkworks12 күн бұрын
Thank you. Yes, so long as you use a washable ring and washable threads. Make sure the threads are well secured at the back. I'd always recommend hand washing for complex thread buttons, they take time and deserve gently care.
@narsham85217 күн бұрын
Wonderful tutorial! Question - what size round and hexagon button did you use? Also, what size thread please. Thanks so much!
@GinaBSilkworks13 күн бұрын
Thank you! 25mm for both (an inch) and #8 cotton perle. The finer thread on the domed mould is a #12.

Is the front warp,ever tied to the waist to keep,tension like Backstrap,weaving?
@GinaBSilkworksАй бұрын
I don't think it is usual to do so when there is a box or loom attached to the heddle. However, just using the heddle - and fixing the far end of the warp to a single fixed point, then yes, the worked end would often be fixed to the belt or backstrap. I think the loom part might be too cumbersome, but, it's worth trying. If it works for you, then it works!

Can these be used as buttons and if so how would you attach them.
@GinaBSilkworks2 ай бұрын
Yes, they can be. Traditionally, they are attached by simply stitching through some of the base threads. This style of button was often found on coats. For modern use, if you intend to wash the garment, you need to either work over a washable mould or remove the button before washing. My "changeable button" video is one way. I also have a video on many different button backs that gives you more modern ways of attaching and using them kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJqbkGp6hZWcqLcsi=rre48FclW7ufCxhY

I'm glad you found it helpful. The hexie rings are really great to make hexagon Dorset style buttons! If you try this with the little rings, ensure you secure well through all layers so that the threads don't slip.

Where do you get your rings?
@GinaBSilkworks2 ай бұрын
We sell a very large range over on our website! But you can use just about any ring, so long as it is closed (jump rings that aren't joined aren't good). If you intend to wash the button, you'll need to use washable materials. www.ginabsilkworks.co.uk/buttons/button-moulds/rings

I can see any of them (especially the first one) in a row down the front of a white silk blouse …. white pearl cotton with a mix of white and clear beads. Very stylish. I would need to sew on with fishing line so none were lost! Can I ask where your accent is from. I cannot place it.
@GinaBSilkworks2 ай бұрын
The white with white sounds perfect, especially smaller buttons on a work blouse. Just a bit of extra sparkle! Accent- American born, but been in England since childhood. So it's a mix of allsorts!

Can these be functional buttons? Like a feature button on a cardigan?
@GinaBSilkworks3 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Using a brass ring and cotton thread, it can be gently washed. All thread buttons can be used as functional buttons, but washing them will depend on the materials you use. Buttons with wooden moulds or silk threads for instance, should not be washed. Use these for garments/items that aren't washed often (coats for instance) and remove them if you do need to wash.
