I first learned about this from Dr. Ruth while watching her on some talk show back in the 80's. She made a great suggestion...do these when you are watching tv when the commercial comes on....that was before the internet though so I suggest doing it when stopped at a stop light. Not during rush hour though, it might distract you!. Anyway, I found this when I got honest with myself about the condition of those muscles. So, I am doing this again and I taught myself to focus on any one thing very steadfastly by doing 3x3x28. Write a post it and put it on the mirror in your bathroom. This means, Three times a day, three times each time (math here is essentially 9 times a day) for 28 days. This is a form of training to get your body and mind connected. I do this for many different things I want to achieve in life. It works well if you stick to it. So, for this round of treatment I am doing the three times, three times a day with a mantra. While brushing my teeth, I close my eyes and imagine swimming and the contractions are waves. The mantra is, The Waves Will Make Me Stronger. Now, for the rest of my life, when I think of waves, or see them, or just hear them, I will be trained to do the method! I will get back to you to let you know whats happened after a month. Now I am going to find a "wave sound track" to loop.

I am old and I have been sickly my whole life. Genetics handed to me by birth. I can tell you two things about getting old and being healthy. While you can, meaning NOW no matter your age or health, NOW you start preventative health methods because if you wait you will become a part of the mess the rest of us are in. So as I said, two things, LEARN everything you can about your genetic makeup. Then, do everything to slow what will be inevitable but it will be worth every cent, every struggle and every ounce of time it takes to be healthy. That was a mouthful for a woman telling you that I have two things to tell you. I am stuck with my cards because I didn't play them right. Now the pharma farms have a direct line to my money. I have spent millions of dollars, about 17 million if I include what insurance has paid. That isn't counting inflation. Anyway, once they start cutting out body parts, they see me as a golf club membership renewal or a new car. After I die I am giving my body to science to figure out what all the meds did for what is wrong with me. The side effects are as bad as the illness's. My brother chose the path I put to you to follow. He eats right, exercises, married a woman thirty years younger than him at the age of 63. He chose not to have kids so our medical curses wouldn't be passed on. I had one child, that is all my body could take. My childhood trauma was really, really bad. Between that and my health, I turned to drugs in the 70's and 80's off and on but now I have 33 years clean. Imagine that, I don't self medicate anymore! So if you see the truth in my diatribe here, please, reply to this old Nana and I have a lot more to share. I have helped a huge number of people by being honest, forthright, knowledgeable and I am a great listener. Please, reply and I will share my insights. Nothing personal like names or anything like that, keep it general so you feel ok about sharing. I am disabled and need to share before I get worse. I have little contact with the world these days, except for doctors. I have more of them than friends. OH, that brings up another fact, when you get sick, you will find out who your real friends are, just like when you get clean!!

I'm seeing a lot of comments that this is the worst exercise to do for DR, should only be used to measure your diastasis, etc. There are two different movements that it's important to distinguish between. One is a mini crunch. You'll know you're doing this if you see doming/coning, which is why it should be avoided if you have DR except to measure the gap. The other movement, which is being demonstrated in this video, is a head lift. It only involves lifting your head/neck without the rest of your torso. If done correctly, my understanding is that it should NOT cause coning. From a distance these two movements may look similar, but one is very good for DR and one is very bad for it. (I am not a physical therapist or other medical professional, just someone trying to heal my own DR 🙂)

Thanks for the information. I do believe that many of us are given limited to no information on how to cure minor incontinence before it becomes a serious problem. I did kegels for years and years. I was never able to stop my stress /sports induced incontinence. Finally I was cured - it took only 6 weeks. I learned that I had to empty my bladder then create situations in which the leaks normally happened (jumping jacks or heavy lifting). Over time I could time the kegel just right with the anticipated leak during exercise. This developed muscle memory and strength. I am committed to helping others with their incontinence problems with my new workout channel for middle age women. Just wanted to spread the word.

Although diastasis recti involves the superficial Rectus abdominis (muscle with a 6pack) it is caused by pressure from the inside out, so really, you have to target the deeper muscle called the Transverse abdominis. This muscle wraps around the core and one of its main functions is to hold in the internal organs in proper place. Some exercises like crunches, sit ups, planks, and strait legged dead lifts can cause a diastasis recti to get worse, so I wouldn't do this particular exercise. As a rule of thumb, after you do a specific exercise, lay on your back and look for doming in the abdominal area... if you see this then don't do that exercise! Men who power lift often develop the condition because of this. It is not just a pregnancy issue, nor a female issue. Poor form when performing certain exercise can make it worse, so although exercise can definitely help, educate yourself thoroughly and do lots of research first!!! I am a certified fitness trainer who also has dealt with one of the worse cases of this condition imaginable. The process is slow but progress is progress none the less.
