Whenever I hear the PAL version of the theme it throws me off because of the slow tempo, I played the heck out of the NTSC version when I was a kid and am used to the faster pace. I've always preferred the Atari rendition of the theme over the C64 because the extra sound channel makes it sound much more full. Are you playing this on the base Atari 800 or Atari 800XL?

Oof! Grew up on C=64 NTSC and I didn't know what people meant by this being off-tune. Thank you for preserving it! Also a fun little reminder that EA was once ECA, probably before it bought out hell and filled it with lootboxes.
@CandyHatsuneWolff5 ай бұрын
Maybe 20 years ago, some people were playing the C=64 version (in-person real hardware IIRC?) and they supposedly managed to get a cooperative score of A MILLION. Now I'm not the greatest player, but I've loved this game for four decades. If M.U.L.E. Online continues to mature and standardized game tourneys with proper recordkeeping ever becomes a thing, I would love to be part of a co-op effort like that.
@CarpeLudumGGS5 ай бұрын
Never heard of "a million", especially not on C64. But there is a bug/feature in the original Atari version which allows pushing up the colony score significantly by performing a commodity transaction at the highest possible price in the last auction phase (turn 12 before final scoring)

Any aspects of this game that you like more than MULE?
@CarpeLudumGGS9 ай бұрын
The main gameplay change is that in Subtrade there is the possibility to grow turtles (Subtrade's MULE equivalent) oneself on the coral reef plots. This is the equivalent of being able to produce MULEs instead of having to buy them in the store, thereby this circumvents the whole economy. It offers a new gameplay strategy of complete autarcy for a single player, instead of creating the feeling for all players to "sit in the same boat". I guess Dani would have opposed this new design element, as it would have been against her credo of "bringing people together in play". Special support for total egoists would not fit into this philosophy...
@puzzud9 ай бұрын
@@CarpeLudumGGS Interesting how small things like this can impact strategy and gameplay in dramatic ways. It is true that Dani Bunten axed gameplay elements that resulted in the game being too complicated or less fun. At face value, I don't see how making one's own MULEs would be different than producing energy. But you are right--the more a player just plays (and wins) by strategies that don't involve trading with other players, the less the game is MULE.
