Hey Clay… wouldn’t it be nice if we could just ask Paul what instruments were on what track? I know that would take some “fun” out of investigation of their songs. But considering how many people are and have been interested in their instruments/process, I bet it would even be fun for Paul to have the opportunity to share amongst us “nerds”.

Sure would ! Paul's been quite candid in the past that he does not remember most things. Once he was asked what sort of strings he used he said "long shiny ones" :)

Great video! Thanks Clay ! Unfortunately, WA19 has a very boosted band around 4.8 kHz. This needs to be cut -12dB, at Q20. Additionally (+5dB) approximately 60-70 Hz and 2.75 kHz (+1.5dB). This move is very close to the original.

Vocals would have helped a lot but on the drums I pretty much always prefered the sound of the vintage D19s. They just sounded smoother with a little bit more of a sense of depth. Listening on NDH 30 headphones

I can't tell, you play them BOTH so well. Subconsciously I believe you are bringing all of your skill to make each sound as if it were the one. Ask Paul or we have to take your word for it. Paul with Wings almost exclusively, especially in concert he played the Rick . Was the White album mostly the Fender Jazz? That would mean mostly John & George playing bass and I don't buy it. I suspect it was used pretty much like it was on Let it Be (Get Back) and Abbey Road. True, Paul used both the Rick and the Fender more on the White Album but he was back to his Hoff for the last two albums, why was this one album so diff? ASK PAUL!

Are you sure that Paul didn't use the original 'muting stuff' tha Ric kenbacker has as part of its bridge? I mean the absorber rubber sponge, that has two knobs (screw caps) to control its action?

In a few rare occasions,in studio snd on stage,John would put electric strings on the J160 accoustic. Thats how he got the sound for "I Feel Fine". Accoustic thru the AC30.

Nice compares. I don't think these sound close at all. On toms it was less noticeable but everywhere else you can really hear the difference. The D19's are rounder on top, midrange is nice and the lowend def extended. The WA-19s are brighter with a sort of boxy midrange and less lowend.

I was in Grand Funk and we were one of the first groups to record in Bill’s brand new studio. The board had not even been installed yet.All the components of it sat on tables with a ton of spaghetti leading everywhere. Even with all that craziness it was immediately apparent that the room had qualities. That was in 1981. Who knew back then that history would be made there in the following decades . Congratulations to you all who stood up to the challenge!

Superb. Love your videos, and so glad I found your channel. Subscribed. I know it is a kind of heresy to even think in these terms, but what do you think of the Dr. Robert pedal for an approximation of the guitar sounds on 'Revolver'?

Great work. Many thanks. It certainly sounds to me that the Jazz was on 'Helter Skelter'. Like John and George, I really wish 'Abbey Road' had been recorded through the REDD, rather than the TG12345 - the REDD is one of the reasons I far prefer the valve/tube sonic character of The White Album to transistor sound of 'Abbey Road', even though the high end is quite attractive on 'Abbey Road'. And further, I really would like all of The Fabs' records up to and including 'Revolver' to have been done at Olympic.

The wa-19 seems to suffer on close-miking. To me the d-19 sounds naturally a touch "compressed" when pushed, probably because of the way the transformers react, getting a touch saturated and a bit bigger, while having more of a top roll-off that seems to get accentuated when sources get louder. The opposite happens with the wa-19 (it seems that it gets brighter on louder sources and "flatter"). All that said, like with a km184, that presence boost makes absolute sense once you get some distance between the mic and the source. They're nearly indistinguishable as a mono overhead, which is, you know, the point of the recreation. I'd buy (and will) one wa-19, just for that.

Proving once again there’s no substitute for the real thing. These sound bright and boring and I’m not surprised. It was difficult to make them back then and the transformers coupled with the now unobtanium (and extremely delicate) moving coil diaphragms were magic that cannot be duplicated. I’d buy one of these over an sm57 but it sure ain’t a d19

What's your source that they largely used the J-160E's on the first album? I'm not debating, as it's always been my discernment as well just from the tone and sound of the guitars, I always suspected as much.

I bought a pair of these when they first dropped. I intended to use them for recording myself, but I run live sound regularly and have been throwing them on different sources starting with drum OH’s and was surprised by how usable they were. On snare it wasn’t that different than a 421, but better than a 57. On a tube amp I liked it much better than a Beta57 and the Sennheiser e906. I prefer the Beyerdynamic M69TG for the same price for amps. I have an AKG d224 and I much prefer that on most sources to these mics, but like the D19’s it is nearly twice the price. In the end I’d recommend it to someone wanting to branch out from an SM57 or e609, who still wants a warranty and peace of mind that it will work for a while. Ina few years we should see a ton of these on the used market and at $120 they’d be really great.

Great vid, thanks! The White Album had a whole different vibe and sound and the Jazz Bass (and occasional VI?) made for a helluva departure from the clean 'bounce' of the Rick on Pepper / MM Tour / Yellow Sub etc.
