That's a great question, being rubber, like tyres, I assume they would only last so long. I see various sources stating every 5 years, and that would make sense to me.

I have a similar leak-down tester. I learned after many frustrating tests that it was only accurate if I went from Negative to 0 when setting the tester. But if I pass 0, then returned from Positive to 0, it was unreliable. ...for what it's worth.

Hey there, I have a manual 100 series 2003 petrol V8.. it started making a funny sound for a few weeks, then yesterday on the highway the gears stopped engaging.. after reading a bit in guessing it's the clutch cable? Nothing else seems wrong, the stick shifts into all gears, just not engaging with transmission.. Any advice before I dive in blindly?

Sir, doesn’t the chromoly lock nut Allen head bolts hit the free wheeling hub ? The Allen heads are out quite a bit.
@jamesttol
@jamesttol 8 күн бұрын
When removing the conical washers at the start, you should leave the nut on there flush with the stud to reduce risk of damage to the stud and also give you a bigger surface area to hit.
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 8 күн бұрын
Not a bad idea, though as long as you use a brass drift or hammer, you're not going to damage the threads of the stud.

Eureka moment was simply determining all the gold given to the jeweller was used in the crown, no alloy determination.

Didn't Archimedes determine that the crown was alloyed with silver?
@andrewstrutt1703
@andrewstrutt1703 14 күн бұрын
@ my understanding was he worked out the jeweller use all the gold he was given. Would have thought weight would have determined that. Maybe a combination of weight and volume could determine alloy content? My mistake if this is the case….how are the polymer bags holding up? I’ve heard the leak and make things sticky?

@@andrewstrutt1703 unfortunately we can never ask Archimedes! Though the Techni ice is still hanging in there, it does occasionally get a bit of a slimy surface, not sure what that is though it washes off easily enough.

I've always thought soldered is the way to go this was a great demonstration thanks. I had no idea crimping alone was so much worse.
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 19 күн бұрын
Don't get me wrong, crimping is orders of magnitude worse than soldering resistivity wise, though the overall losses of a couple of crimped connections in a wiring setup vs soldered while higher, will not be orders of magnitude worse than the same setup, when you take into consideration the losses in the cable, contact losses of the joints etc.

DCEP stands for Direct Current ELECTRODE Positive. The E is for electrode, not earth. The fourth digit of the electrode code tells you the type of flux coating used. This does influence what polarity you should use, but tells you a lot more about the rod than just the recommended polarity.

I lost the metal cables and used zip ties. Three joined together on the big side. Still holding on many months now. But will order the metal ones. Also, people should be told, don’t hit the axel with any regular or metal hammer! Yeah a plastic or wooden or rubber mallet is ok. But better to put metal pin or socket extension to middle of axel and hit. The point being it is very easy to damage the threads. Also don’t think that by putting the axel nut on the end will help. I know it doesn’t because I made that mistake. Ended up having to angle grind the axle end to cone shape and retthread the bolt on the opposite end. Lesson learned. Next is don’t get grease on your hands or on the boot. Especially if it is stretched fit! It is a pain. Third, watch out for the disc dust cover. It easily bends. Easy fix though. I had to do a rear inner boot. Getting it out of the diff was quite easy as I kept turning it a bit then yanking, about half way around it came out easy. Was bit more difficult to get in, but I made error of clip open side being up than down. But it slid in easy. No need to hammer.

I used to crimp but they didn't hold, then I crimped then soldered.. the solder did the holding because I had really bad crappy crimps. I got tired of that and actually got a good crimping tool and learned how to crimp and now they hold. And while I don't have a lab to test things.. I think that from what others have said, they have a really good case for crimp only and that is what I do now. Even if wither method would work fin for my uses.. I prefer to do things right and I don't like that solder has different conductivity and heat expansion and capacity to crimped copper or cca for that matter.

I think the most important variable is the quality of the termination, whether you decide to crimp or solder.
@coo463

I've bought awg 2/0 wire before and it fit in a awg 2 lug.. that wire did not meet the standard for double aught wire.. the lugs were ok, but some lugs are too thin too.. anyway I sent it back as I needed at least 1 awg but supposing I crimped that wire with a 2/0 lug or proper wire and a poor lug, neither would be a good hold. And it takes a bit to know. That hydraulic crimper was a good grimper but it can't make up for other deficiencies. Also there are specialty crimpers for Andersons.. so that was even the wrong crimper as that was for lugs, not open barrel terminals. So there could be several points of failure here.
