For thousands of years , vietnamese dynasties took legitimacy from fighting foreign invaders , aka the Chinese empire , or any other form of Chinese like Mongol Yuan dynasty . Vietnamese first and foremost , is nationalists. Vietnamese choose communism , because in the war against foreign invaders like France , the Americans , the British and the entire west were backing France, while the Soviet Union were the only country supporting vietnamese independence and self determinations . And communism is a great idea , everybody is equal , the comradery .ect.. in practice , it doesnt work , but in ideology , it is extremely appealing when you were just colonial slaves of foreigners with no human's rights harsh exploitations subjugation ... it is kind of similar in Russia where they had serfdom or technically slavery before revolutions. But ideologies aside, Vietnamese are nationalists first and foremost , we have no problem fighting Chinese communists if they want to invade or puppeteering Vietnam.

Thailand have very large numbers of tourists . Thailand tourism 18% of GDP , vietnam on the contrary tourism only make up barely 2% , and western tourist probably make up 1 or 2% of that 2% , because the vast majority of foreign tourists are Chinese and South Koreans, so technically they looks exactly the same as Vietnamese too. not many people in Vietnam speak English , so the western tourists feel truly like foreigners than in Thailand , it could be inconvenient at times, but it give you more of that chilling excitement .

Communism helped Vietnam defeat the superpowers France, Japan, and the U.S. Thats why it is very proud and patriotic. Compared to other communist countries like China, North Korea, or Cuba, Vietnam is relatively free since it is no longer officially communist. The frequent comparison to Thailand doesn't sit well with me: Thailand was never colonized, never experienced a war like Vietnam, and didn't endure a similarly challenging history. I love Thailand, but it should be much wealthier than it is today and should be compared to Singapore, Japan, or Korea, given that it hasn't faced a war in the past 100 years. Also Thailands government is less stable than Vietnam. Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines and Indonesia demonstrate that "democracy" isn't always the right system to establish a stable state and achieve wealth.

I said in one of my first videos here that I prefer not to compare them because I know they are two completely different political environments and they both have different histories that influenced the way things are today and it is not exactly the best mindset to have when traveling to a new country because it influences your perspective and stops you from seeing a country for what it is. With that being said there are also a few people who asked me to compare the two countries maybe because they are considering to move from one to the other or maybe they have never been here before. Once I’ve spent a bit more time here I plan to do a more in depth comparison because I think it is quite an interesting topic that I think hasn’t been covered that much 🙏🏻

Based on forecast data published by the IMF’s World Economic Outlook in April 2024, it shows that developing countries have the highest growth projections until 2029. As the third smallest country in South America by land area, Guyana is projected to be the world’s fastest-growing economy from now until 2029. Then there’s Vietnam, the only Southeast Asian country to break into the top 10 with a projection of 6.4% from 2024 to 2029.

 @Jarod_Abroad The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that we changed the governance from communist (each month, a person will get x kg of rice, y kg of meat, etc.) to a more divested economy. We called it a socialist-oriented market economy, "a multi-sectoral market economy where the state sector plays the decisive role in directing economic development, with the eventual long-term goal of developing socialism". Because of that, more countries have invested in Vietnam through FDI (direct government investment), mainly from Japan, the EU, the US, etc. They give us the money; we create jobs and land for their development, companies, and industries. The best example of that is from Korea and Samsung. Samsung has been in Vietnam for decades, and it is one of the largest exporters in Vietnam. Also, with the political view of taking no one side, Vietnam has and still can play with both and most of the most significant economic powers (the US, China, Russia, etc.); therefore, we can all benefit from all sides of the globe. Many videos on YT explain why the rise of the VN economy is so drastic.

Hi Jarod, by asking for your viewer input about 'communism', you are letting yourself being more objective and willing to hear other's inputs. That is quite refreshing. I hope you will not be offended from what I have to say here. Objectively speaking, 'Communism' or 'Capitalism' or 'Monarchy' are just different forms of government. Whatever form of government one particular country chooses is up to that country, their people and based on their culture and ethos. No country should dictate what form of government any country should have. It's up to that the country and its people to decide their form of government and their future. Look at communist China, China has miraculous transformed into the highest GDP country in term of PPP and second highest in nominal GDP. China has lifted nearly 800 million people out of poverty. Of course, you won't hear these achievements much from Western media other than the usual smears 'Xinjiang genocide', 'ruthless communist oppression', ect... I am Vietnamese American and have lived both in Vietnam and the US long enough to know that most people are being overwhelmingly brainwashed day after day that 'communism' is hell and that in 'communist countries' there are no 'freedom and democracy' and what have you. That is totally fear-mongering and untrue. Let me explain to you and your viewers. First of all, whatever you can do in the US, you can do the same in Vietnam. In term of 'freedom of speech' for example, sure in Vietnam you cannot say 'Fxck you General Secretary Trong' out loud on social media because you might be subject to being arrested as comparing to the US where you will not be arrested by saying 'Fxck you Biden'. However, 'freedom of speech' is only warranted when what you say have some affect on government policies. In the US, the media is comprehensively controlled by the ruling class and what you mouth out about your grievances are mostly ignored. So the difference between Vietnam and the US in this regard is just the same. In term of 'democracy', Vietnam selection of leaders every 5 years is decided by voting within the party's politburo(highest echelon of power). In the US, it's one man one vote which at superficial level seems to be ideal. However, the reality is that 'campaign donation'(a nice term for legalized corruption) in hundreds of millions of dollars being poured into each party, each candidate at all level of governments. Whose interests do you think the going-to-be-elected officials will cater to once they are in office? Of course, the interests of those lobbyists will be at higher priority then the interest of the common people. Where is the democracy in that ? In term of 'corruption', I have to admit to you, Vietnam has a widespread corruption problem but that's not unique to 'communism'. It's a widespread phenomena worldwide including the West. The purpose of reading news is to understand what's going on and most importantly, to see the bottom of the truth. In other to find the bottom of the truth, we have to read alternative sources, listening to contrarian viewpoints and enjoy different perspectives. I found out that the vast majority of Western media exists only to mind-conditioning people using their vast media apparatus. When I say Western media, that comprised almost 97% of world media including, but not limited to, KZbin, Facebook, X(Twitter), Fox, NBC, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Politico, BBC....and countless various others. For me personally, I look for contrarian viewpoints on KZbin. I read alternative sources from www.rt.com of Russia, www.chinadaily.com.cn of China to get what they have to say and come up with my own conclusions. I have very much shied away from western mainstream media long time ago and never miss it a bit. Hope this helps.

They are no longer communist in their economic view but capitalist so they are no longer practicing the true communist ideology that they fought before 1975. True communist ideology is great in theory but never in practice. There is no individual ownership, everyone shares in the wealth; hence, if one person works and another person chooses not to, the working person will have to share their wealth with the person not working. That’s why country that practices true communism doesn’t survive. They either have to change in practice (like Vietnam and even China where individual ownership is allowed to prosper so that people have incentive to work hard to make a living and bring the national economy up) OR be like a true communist country like Cuba (look up videos from Cuba) where bc everything is “shared” they pass out ration coupon. Each family member gets a coupon for everything. If you want a chicken, you have to wait in line to buy chicken with your coupon. There is a line for everything controlled by coupon passed out by the government. There is no incentive to work hard bc the guy next to you will get the same ration that you have whether or not he works. Have you ever seen any government agency that is truly well run? No because businesses are own by individuals who wants to retain customers so their standards have to be higher to retain customers or the customers will go to the next business. Government agencies have no one that truly monitors them and they don’t care to make a profit to survive or prosper so standards and everything is low. Therefore, true govt run communist countries like Cuba have a very poor economy vs the communist countries that have abandoned the practicing of true communism but actually practice capitalism or a hybrid version of capitalism is surviving or thriving (like Vietnam).
@wtrbufalo
@wtrbufalo 2 күн бұрын
If you look around you in Vietnam, all these people are opening their front doors and offering their merchandise or services to you…that’s capitalism…not communism. True communism what you own belongs to the govt or the whole community. When the communist took over Vietnam in 1975, all individual homeowners were force to open their homes for anyone to move in and live. So many people had squatters come in and live with the homeowners. What was crazier is that it happened to my aunt. She finally sold her house a few years back but the squatter became part owner when they squat in 1975. My aunt even tried to buy the squatter’s portion of the house back but the squatter ended up selling his portion to someone else so my aunt had to cut her house up all around the squatter in order to sell. That’s what communism in practice looks like. Not very realistic to have no land rights, no ownership. The reason why my aunt was allowed to sell is that from 1975 until present day, they had changed from communism to capitalism so she was allowed to continue having ownership to her house. Your friend’s view that “since communist party came into power things got better.” That’s rather a broad generalization without any analysis. After any war, things will be better than during a war. However, the growth that you see now is not a true practice in communism… it’s capitalism. Look up definition of both for reference. I hope this helps :-)

We are not actually a communist country but a socialist country. It is kind of the same kind of at some point, yet it is not strict compared to communism (in which everything is controlled by the government and the government will give everyone the same thing); communism is just an idea, a philosophy that we want to move forward to. As a Vietnamese, I have to say that I quite like my country and how the government governs the country. We only have one party, and they control all aspects, which means we don't have too aggressive right and left sides that we have to choose when there is an election; also, as one party, they can continue doing what they planned to do for an extended period, compared to other countries, the leading party can demolish everything the prior party are doing/ trying to do. Of course, there are drawbacks in terms of bribing, yet our leaders are trying really hard to eliminate that, and the people are happy with the actions. In terms of being free to do something, we are more accessible than "developed" countries; you can sell anything you make, and it's easier for you to live, honestly. I'm studying in the UK right now, and if you make me choose, I'll choose Vietnam to live in because of the government. Also, safe to say that most of Vietnamese like the government :)

I see, so what is exactly implied with the new tax regulations?

@@Jarod_Abroad It depends on the country where you earn your income, where you live and what treaty they have signed.

it IS OK to compare countries, like Vietnam to Thailand. Very useful for us. Many people are tired of thailand. For many reasons.

Okay, I will keep that in mind, maybe in the future I could do a more comprehensive comparison between being an expat in Thailand to being an expat in Vietnam 😁🙏🏻

The Russians have the money 💰 to buy upscale property in Jontiem etc. I have also heard that Russian tourists are obnoxiously & extremely rude ! Yuck

If you love the vibe of some cafes, I recommend going to the old apartment at the junction between Ly Tu Trong street and Dong Khoi Street (chung cư 26 lý tự trọng) with many cozy cafes looking out to the city center and it also has a high stair behind that you can see such a distinct view. Moreover, coming to the old apartment in Nguyen Hue walking street is also a good idea. Cheers.

Thanks for the recommendations! 😁🙏🏻 I will go check them out, right now I am in an area where there’s a cafe on every corner, I might be wrong but I think this is the place you mentioned, if not I will go look for it and make a video about it 😁🙌🏻

@@Jarod_Abroad Great to hear your response. I think the ones I mentioned are different because they are near Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral and Ho Chi Minh City Hall. Therefore, the prices of beverages there are pretty higher than average but the views and vibes are unique😄.
