@@philrammusic Oh, no worries about the typos and spellings, I understood 🙂 I'm appreciating Sammy every time I pick up my guitar and I'm always honouring him with mentions on my gigs, lots of stuff was influenced by his approach to playing. Sam was initially on Kicking Mule label owned by Grossman and later on Stefan established Shanachie label that's now an entertainment label, maybe he sold it... Sam's double CD "The Art Of Bottleneck Guitar" was on Shanachie. Cheers!

Hello I had a look at your retreat workshop in Ven. I am in Scotland and the logisitics of getting there are quiet compalex (and expensive) . Flying goes via London as direct to copenhagen is even more expensive. I am still looking for a viable solution. If you can help me understand how ot calcuate the total inclusive package price for instruction fees and accomodation etc. - hat would be helpful. Last, do you have a more precise address for the venue or is it easy to find? Looks good -
@HomesickMac5 ай бұрын
George, so noble of you to consider attending my Retreat despite the difficulties. Ive had participants flying in from the UK previously, and actually the logistics aren't that cumbersome once at the Copenhagen Airport. There's then a direct train towards the city of Landskrona. Then there's a buss that takes you to the little ferry, and off you go to the Island of Ven, takes 30 mins. I'd be more than happy to continue our conversation through email so please send a message to [email protected]

@@HomesickMac I have just got off the phone to Michael Roach - I thought the blues week had moved to Hartpury college - The posts online were a little confusing. . He informed me that they moved back to Northampton but it is fully booked this year . Where I live - way up north - it is 10 to 11 hours on 6 trains to get to Hartpury - Northampton is more feasible . Are you involved at Norhthampton this year? I Cannot believe that 25years later (and a lot of water under the bridge) I heard from you and spole to Michael . Very nice - uplifting. @HomesickMac5 ай бұрын
Hello! I've recorded with two microphones. My voice and a little bit from the guitar sound is picked up by an Earthworks SR314 condenser microphone that was placed above my head and out of camera frame, and I've had an Aston Origin condenser in front of the guitar and a little bit to the side of my picking hand. Both mics went into Rode Caster Pro II by Røde which acted as an interface in this case. Thank you for commenting!

I have been listening mostly electric blues, but would like to get some grips of this style of playing which has a mix of lead and rhythm both the same time. Any songs/artists recommendation?
@HomesickMac5 ай бұрын
Zdravo Igore! Thank you for commenting, and here's my take on this. Playing a combination of melodies, rhythms, small note-twirks in between vocal phrases, is my own style nowadays, I even play the solos like that. I simply never leave the basses and the chords.. My biggest influence here was Brownie McGhee when it comes to blues. He was the very first blues guitarist I've heard and his style took me so hard that I just had to study him in detail. He is also one of guitarists from that era (like 1930's to 70's there somewhere) who could both play 12 bar blues, 8 bar stuff (like "Key To The Highway" for ex.), then he could also play alternative bass style. This is a child with many names, it's fingerpicking, Travis picking... But listen to almost anything he played with Sonny Terry, songs like "Whole Sale Dealer" (12 bar blues), "Walk On", also a shuffley groove, but then also "Custard Pie", Hand In Hand", if you just look it up on Spotify or Apple Music, you'll find loads of recordings. That would be my first tip 🙂

@@HomesickMac Zdravo :) Zadnje vrijeme sam bacio oko više na akustični blues.. deep river blues, nine pound hammer, clive caroll mississipi blues, big bill bronzy hey hey, eric clapton before you accuse me.. cilj bi bio razviti vokabular da mogu iz običnog shuffle-a krenuti u lead i kretati se po formi blues-a 'na vrijeme'.. Thank you, I realized my approach was more into details of various parts of the melody, but I've never really ran through the whole thing.. you're 100% right. I'll correct this in the next video where I'll play the melody on top of my own backup (that you can see in the end of this video).

Hi! Just an update regarding my own comment.. I've tried but couldn't manage to record that "The Weight" melody in full, with the provided backup, some syncing technical issues occured. I will eventually fix it as I'm learning more about filming and editing. I'm uploading a new video as I'm writing this, it's "Jesus On The Mainline" in Open D with slide, fingerstyle, chords and grips explained..._and_ ... as I've learned from reading your comment before, I took some special care to play the whole melody several times through. Thanks for watching!

OK, I did assume that you've heard "The Weight" before, in making of this instructional video. Maybe you've played it in the original key of A, and then it might be confusing that I'm coming with everything played in the key of G, plus that it's in an open tuning. But this is how I do it most of the times, _and_ if I'd back up anybody playing in the original key, I'd put a capo on the 2nd fret when in Open G, that's a solution. Just make sure, in case you're doing the same, to play it on a guitar that's got 14 frets to the body, otherwise it's a stretch to reach those higher notes...
