This is one of the first Quad tapes I bought about 15 years ago. This is an exceptional mix and was used as a demo tape to play for label execs to get them behind quad. One of my favorite tapes :) thanks for the comment

The atmosphere recalls His classic "My Jelly Roll Soul". Two mais diferences: the last part of Byard's solo, and the absence of some swinging modern choruses here: everything is humorous and "antique".

Back in the day, the Columbia Record Club offered open reel titles of popular albums. They usually were a buck or two more than the vinyl albums. I purchased them back then and have over 100 titles. A few years ago, I archived them to 192/24 WAV files. Even with most of the released open reel titles were 3.75 IPS, they still sounded much better than the vinyl albums. A few were 7.5 IPS and were even better. Sure, they were non-Dolby, but far superior to having to put up with clicks, pops, and groove distortion with the vinyl releases. Sadly, near the end of the Columbia Record Club ending vinyl sales and moving to CD only, they discontinued the open reel titles.

Listened to a 70s version of the vinyl and the whisper was overwhelming to the point I had to look up if the vinyl was a different version. Love it

DOLBY LEVEL SET TONES ARE PROVIDED AT THE START OF THIS RECORDING FOR USE WITH ADJUSTABLE DOLBY PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT. Can you please make video what kind of tones is at the start? It is both sides? And how long they play? Also, can you hear it trough speakers?

This is the only worthwhile analog version to seek after. Prices are a bit over the top lately , since this tape is well bought back in the days, it was a commercial 2 track release after all. One tip: never play this on an Otari, if you have a Revox or better a Studer a80 this will hanlde these thin and sometimes brittle tapes more gently. Otari is just too rough with 7'reels. nevertheless , nice recording. And I envy the tape, only have the 4 track release.

I'm thinking the 2A fuse board is part of the difference between the US version and the EU Export models - The AC power supply of the European version is switchable from 220V/240V to 110V/125V 50/60Hz. The American version is only designed for 110V/125V 50/60Hz I am not aware of other differences but I am not a technician.

Hello. Great series of videos! I am seeking information about the model version you show in this series. It is branded “Technics by Panasonic”. I have the same model version. This version of the model does not completely match the Service Manuals that are floating around. As an example, there is a small two 2A fuse board wired (on the two blue wires) between the power transformer and the PS board.

thanks - for the note :) Agreed this album would have been great on 7 1/2 ips tape. I find the Columbia House tapes on the clear reels sound better than the grey. There are two Bob Seger albums on 7 1/2 IPS reel tape. I have the Back in 72' it sounds great but for me Bob Seger reel-y hit with the Silver Bullet Band.

@@s.t.e.r.e.o. Word! towards the end of the reel tape era some titles perhaps a hundred or so tapes were reissued by Magtec at 7 1/2 IPS sadly this wasn't one of them.

Well... I would never prefer Pioneer of these series to any of Otari, Ampex, Teac (Tascam), Denon, Technics, or even Sony with their ferrite heads. I have no idea how Pioneer's 10xx series sound, but this one is just a good eye attractor.

Hello, I've just come across your video which is very well done. But ... for me, the shiny side of the tape is the one in front of the playback head, and the darker, less shiny (matte) side is the one on the outside --> for all the professional tapes manufactured today. And for some older tapes (not all, unfortunately...) it's the other way around.
@ReelHifi5 ай бұрын
thx :) Yes you are right some tapes both back in the day and today are not easy to distinguished which side to splice and may be confusing for some folks. At the time I made this I was mainly collecting prerecorded tape and this is the case for most prerecorded reels and acetate tape.
