12-31-24 Just watched, the D-28 wins. Six years ago I sold my 1976 D-28, the only thing I've ever sold and made money. Augestino in Clearwater, Fl. replaced the saddle, bridge, pick guard, some frets in 1990. What a great guitar. Yes I miss it.

The Alvarez is definitely brighter but probably is mainly because of the difference in the wood. It sounds awesome especially for 2k less

My older brother gave me his MD60 because it was too difficult to play and I agree, it's a beautiful guitar, it has a much brighter sound and not as warm as a Martin but it's just a beast to play or at least the one I got is, action is really tight from that angled headstock and its just not a comfortable or enjoyable playing guitar.

Alvarez sounds like it has new strings. Martin sounds warmer. Thanks!!

I definitely prefer the Martin's sound. Seemed richer, fuller and clear as a bell. The Alverez did sound good...but that has something to do with the player too. Thanks for the comparison video.

Exceptional guitar playing by a humble Man ! Thank you for your video comparing these two Martin guitars. I just played these two models 2 weeks ago. I liked each. Johnny Cash liked the D-35 and the music he made on his D-35 is legendary. His Black signature Martin is $5300.00 I played that guitar too. It all come's down to your individual preference, need, and style on which guitar to choose ? I lean toward the D-35 so far, but I am a rookie player. Thank you for your fine video Sir !

Beautiful playing! I have a HD28 and just bought an Alvarez MD80 12 string to mess around with. I love when people try different brands of guitars for bluegrass. Each of us has a sound that we are trying to portray, it's important to have the guitar that helps you express that. When I first started playing bluegrass guitar back in 1978, I had a Bozo' guitar. It had a big backend and was full of fancy inlays. I did win a local flatpicking contest as a beginner with that guitar. I had two choices of what to play, one song with lots of picking (Hucklberry Hornpipe) and another with lots of rhythm with hammer ons and pull offs (Continental Cupshot- my guitar teacher's original). I chose the 2nd song cause I thought it had more "feel" to it. I guess it paid off. I am amazed at the sound of the Alvarez, but both sound great when well played. Thanks for the demo!

Thanks for the compliment, although I’m not a very good player it’s really just smoke screen and mirrors. I wish I were a better player with the likes Trey Hensley, Jake Workman, Tony Rice. Etc, but I’ve never had that kind of ability and I’ve tried all my life too be a player of that caliber and I’m just not one of those guys, but I greatly appreciate the compliment and thanks for watching 👍

You’re paying for the name if you buy the Martin. A lot of people want the Martin, Taylor, etc. on their headstock, and make no mistake, they still make beautiful instruments imo, but if you sleep on Yamaha, Alvarez, and a few others, you’re missing out on one hell of a bang for your buck when you compare sound/build quality over price.
