I think they were also undone by their failure to tour. Sometimes you have to grind it out to get the word out and my understanding is that Chris Bell did not want to tour. However, the label and distributors failures here were criminal.

its such a masterpiece...Alex Chilton,..and never not get emotional listening to it,..this was a revelational find for me back in the college years. And still today moves me 30 some odd years later, personally...resonates universally though; never have I played this version, or especially the WLIR acoustic solo version has someone not been like, "who, what was..why haven't i heard this before?!

It's a big shame Chis Bell's life was never really right, but for 3 minutes and 7 seconds, he makes his and ours feel the way it ought to.

If you were in Cambridge, MA in March 1974, you could have seen Big Star open for Badfinger! Both sets were recorded and can be found on KZbin.

Bands like Big Star,Artful Dodger were so GOOD and never got the acclaim they so deserved, In my opinion,I think they were both caught in between Disco and MTV before it got rolling!!

Interetingly i read about alex chiltons change in his vocal style crossing from the boxtops to big star . Apparently it had to do with life style . He was a heavy drinker . Age . Maturity in his voice . Also creativity & experimenting . He changed his vocals to suite the style of music . The change on his voice was so drastic compared to the boxtops . If i didnt know it was alex singing with big star . Its not like i would recognise his voice as being alex chilton of the boxtops . Dont know why big star were never played on Australian radio ? Great band . Sydney Australia 🦘 9 nov 2024 😊

It’s taken me most of my life to get this band. Perhaps that’s because I listened to its musical disciples - The Cars, the DBs and Marshall Crenshaw- before I ever heard them. Listening with fresher ears now, the music makes sense even if it seems dated (which plenty of music does).
