Three words dude. Micro Hydro Electric. With that river and waterfall on your property, it would be a great supplement to solar.

I'm glad i waited until the end.I was going to ask about the roof panels. Can you use the sheeps wool insulation for the chinking? It would seem a shame to use a chemical based chinking if the sheeps wool would work?

nah mate, in architecture they teach us ALL the construction, not just new stuff. Listen to Uncle :D While it may be true you could have no problems building straight against gravel, it massively depends on ground type, ground warmth, its stability, it's underground composition, the general humidity and general weather conditions of the area... it's always safer to be able to have ventilation, you never know :D

My wife and I love all your videos ❤Here is a suggestion:wranglerstar on KZbin had a log cabin recently delivered and the company erected it on site. I believe that you can get a lot of valuable information from those videos especially doing the windows. This is a great way to build your dream home and using your new sawmill.

Why instead of 2 8x8 floor, you didn't do 4 8x4? Much easier to manoeuvre and do assemble alone

Jimmy! Mate I’m living HARD through your build. I’m all the way down in Oz, and can’t get enough of your video style and format, vs what I do for a trade (of do dividing walls but my trade is building) and man. Such a good series. I am commenting on my phone whilst subjecting the fam to watching this series on the theatre tv, so I hope I’m not too late as I haven’t finished the episode yet but you mention a potential cellar? Would it not be wise to match up the cinder blocks below with say some breaker joists to allow you to be able to cut flooring etc and not cause too much work for yourself?! Oh I just got to the ground beef bit and you must let us know how it goes for you haha Thanks for the build log mate, it’s so good to watch! Dave

As a traditional log builder, you do not want logs to directly touch the ground if you can avoid it. Older cabins could last a while given the quality of the material, however I doubt the quality you used here is sufficient. Also, theres a reason we have thousand year old log cabins in Norway raised up on stone. Good material, dries out quickly and never stands/lies in water. Also, you should cut your insulation instead of compressing it. Air pockets is the important bit, not the wool.

I must say I agree with “Uncle Colin”, the bottom logs need air to dry up and keep “healthy”. As I mentioned before, the 200-ish yo longhouse I once heritaded, stands on rather large stone. The stone foundation is a dry wall, that allows air to flow under the log house. The only challenge has been to prevent badgers and other animals from making an opening big enough to move in underneath the house😅 Anyway, the old house still stands, and in good condition. The floor is hang up in the bottom logs, like you do👍🏼 So I recommend that you make the foundation out of stones. Another thing I would like to comment, is what I learned from my “master” when I long time ago started as a carpenter. Always to cut loose ends, like the layers outside the ends of your roof. The must be cut and removed at one point anyway, and just hanging there in the wind, can end up with some damage, that might give you extra work. I’m still impressed by your energy and positivity to your, perhaps new lifestyle, and honestly a little envious. I got “Norwegian relatives” living around Grande Prairie and Sexsmith, Alberta. I have visited them many times over the years, and in a couple of years, when I retire, I’ll ren a MC and travel all the way from the east coast to visit again. That will be my solo-tour to honor my great uncle, who first moved from Norway to Canada many years ago, and he went 14 days by train, almost the same route as I plan to ride the bike. If possible, I would like to visit you, and your paradise, it’s probably close to my route. Keep up the good work, I love watching your videos. Take care👍🏼🤠

Regarding the insulation. There are solutions which blow small snowflake like sheepwool with air inside the area and all space is completely filled which makes it much more efficient

So funny that you sang that song and danced. In 1981, I went to Scotland, my da’s homeland. His sweet sister Ann took me and my sister to Loch Lomond. I ran out onto the wharf and started doing the highland fling whilst singing that song. My Auntie was flailing her arms abut telling me to “git doon Lassie, git doon!” My sister took a photo of me. We were nothing laughing so hard. When we got the film developed we saw why my wee auntie was yelling so loudly. There was a sign painted, in faded white paint, but it clearly said DANGER KEEP OFF! Lol

Hey James you should offset/stagger your plywood floorboards, you will get a much stronger longer lasting floor this way. Having them all end to end that way is not the best way to install flooring.

Also, like other commentors have said to you, Rip up those floor boards and start again as you need to have the vapour barrier immediately under the floor boards. Where you have it will create a space above the plastic where mould will grow. Live and learn buddy.

I'm No Carpenter or Builder, just looking with common sense and what you have with you. Those couple of inches either side of the floor boards along the edges, maybe cutting some lengths of inches wide of that quarter inch mesh and bending it to fit down in those gaps around the edge as you can see all the way to the gravel so small critters may be able to invade if they get through the undersides. Wood and Insulation by itself probably wont stop them as I have seen mice eat through both Plastic and Wood and move Insulation out of their way and if they can get in, so will snakes, spiders and a number of other nasty little critters. You can always find ways to insulate small areas but keeping the Critters out is the most important in my opinion. Just a thought.

Hi James I'm a 20 yr building inspector and you most definately want to remove that vapour barrier as it's supposed to be installed on the warm side of the floor assembly. If you keep it this way you could potentially have mold developing in your floor as warm moist air condensates when it hits the cold air under this floor.

I must say James, you have a high tolerance for tedium. Much of the stuff you do (and RE-do) would drive me crazy! Heck! it's tedious just watching you cleaning those lower logs near the ground. 🤣 Obviously someone got to you. Told you ya should've cleaned those logs first, THEN buried them. I mean I never saw Shawn James do stuff back-ass-wards. But then we can't all be Shawn James now can we? No. Perfection is very, very rare. The rest of us are just plain old fallible human beings.
