I just quit my job and left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
My first project is a 12' by 16' cabin using the BUTT AND PASS method with raw logs. It will include a sleeping loft and a steel roof. I will not be milling or saddle notching the logs, but chinking in the small gaps that do appear with the butt and pass method with raw logs. This method's main advantage is SPEED.
To all my viewers and subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

To work with the top of the cabin walls and bring the material up, use that wire you have strung across (that the flag was on) higher, and a block and tackle. aka: Shawn James style. Now if Shawn also appears out of the woods with Xander... you'll blow the collective minds of KZbin.

Precisely what I was thinking David Darling! That steel cable he put up originally what I thought he was going to use, 'Shawn James Style' to built the roof. Shawn actually rigged three cables to six different nearby trees. Hahha right David, Shawn James shows up and says, "Oh Padawan, here is how to do it".

Pulleys. You need pulleys. Every time around the pulley reduces the weight.25. You have a winch, and 4 wheel drive. Either build a tripod, or 2 2x4 either side of the wall, with a pulley between. Loved the interaction with Xander.

When you want to get a tree out that is stuck like at 48:00, build a A frame with a flat top, put your cable over the A frame and connect to the bottom of the tree, then you can pull it with your quad.

James, you want to over-engineer for snow load. 2x6s are not big enough to span that distance. Add two more purlins under the 2x6’s so you have 3 purlins spanning the open gable roof. And at least 5-12 pitch on the roof is best to shed snow. Also raw lumber milled by old style saw mill will be stronger.

build an A frame in the interior, use the crux and winch with wire to lift materials up to the requisite height. Like a roman crane, if you are clever, you and lean the frame on the wall that you want to lift onto tie one cable to it to a winch, then run a second wire over the top to another winch so you pull the A frame up which will lift some of the way, then use the second wire to complete the pull.

Best show on the tube,, been here from the get go with ya! If you want to try cowboy coffee again, there's a secret to it. Boil your water and coffee in your kettle, then pour a little bit of cold water in the spout, then a little cold water in the top. The cold water with the grounds sink to the bottom and there you have it. No more filters keep up the hard work brother, its really coming together!!! Lots of love brother. Be safe, and the tracks you found, they are wolf tracks and they are stalking the deer that walked through. I really doubt its only one, they are smart, I've seen them walk in each others tracks in a straight line to hide their numbers, so be careful around them..

The cabin is coming out great!! BUT, I understood that the logs have to be "Seasoned Logs" meaning they need to be at least a year old after they've been cut down. Otherwise, after a little while the wood will start to warp. You're doing a great job!! I can't even imagine how hard it must be to do that by yourself. That's why I'm asking. If you do know (and I'm pretty sure that you do), are these videos just to show us how?? Or will your cabin be a permanent shelter?? Anyway, I do enjoy your videos and hope you have a great weekend!!! God Bless!!!🏕

My suggestion - build yourself some scaffolding. It sucks to take a few days to build it, but once it is done you're not trying to balance on an icy ladder sitting in snow. It will make getting materials on the roof easier because you can throw stuff up on the scaffolding while you're still on the ground and you don't have to constantly climb up and down a ladder. As far as the heavy beams, I have no clue. Kris Harbor Natural Building made himself an a-frame hoist, but it did look cumbersome to use.

Of course anything is OK, but if you have the logs and roofing metal, you could go 3' on the back end of the house. Looking at data of historical homes shows that 2' is certainly reasonable, but you'll lower the risk of water damage if you can bring it up to 3'. Well, in the end it's simply a matter of preference, and it's something worth considering briefly if you haven't considered it yet.

To get your material to the top of your log walls , either use longer ramp logs with more steps/ holding points , with Less steep of an angle. You can also position your atv on opposite side of the cabin / ramps and use the winch to pull the logs up by using your wire you have strung above the cabin and a pulley attached to the wire . Make sure to run the winch line to the log with a strap or rope that pulls the log up evenly / connected on both ends .Hope this helps , your build looks awesome 👏

To get your last logs to the top of your walls. You should build two log tripods and position them on either side of the cabin to support the cable. Then you can hang a chain fall off the cable between them. Giving you sufficient height without sag.

Don't forget to stabilize the openings for the door and windows. Make a "track" in the ends of the logs, deep enough so it can fit a suitable piece of milled lumber that runs the entire height of the opening. Keep at it brother! Greetings from the land of Thor
