@@janestearns9936 hi Jane thanks for your reply. I love your videos the best on youtube, they are very clear and you show examples that drill the concept into me, instead of having to memorize. I wish you can continue to do more Bridge videos. I find yours better than Holland's because his talking is sometimes not clear and too soft to hear, and he talks a lot more with entire video on his face more than showing the cards, i find that not engaging and confusing. His video showing a player articulating her game, has poor sound from the player, assumes we know how to count losers and winners, lots of things just lightly brush past. He may be a very good and famous player but his teaching videos are poor. Just my opinion that your video are far more better than his.

Madam, today i participated in a bridge tournament. It was conduct in Mitchell movement which is player up and board down format. But ranking of result was done in combining both EW and NS points. But so far in know in this format scores are compared separately between all EW and NS pairs and NS and EW will get prizes separately. My question is combination of players from both direction allowed as per bridge law. It was matchpoint scoring system.

At 14:47 when you say that opener has bid 1S then 3C and shows 18 or 19 pts, should this not just be 16+ (16-19 in reality) as bidding above the barrier shows 16+? I didn’t see anything in the previous lessons that a new suit bid above the barrier shows 18 or 19?
@janestearns993610 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment Andrew. The barrier is a very difficult concept (personally I think too difficult) for beginners. In Lesson 4 we talk of rebidding without a jump as showing 12-17HCP and going through the barrier as a "strong hand". The key on the hands at 14:47 is making the jump to the 3 level - that is game forcing - and as such means you must hold 18-19 as your partner's bid might only be made with 6HCP. It's a difficult topic that I can't really do justice to here. I would recommend talking with your teacher. Also - remember these teachings are for New Zealand students and you should go with your tutor's teaching and your country's teachings - not everyone teaches the same system. Good luck with your studies.

There's no need to bid 2 diamonds @16:53 . The hand is semi-balanced and you do hold queens in the two doubletons. Just PASS partner's opening 1 no trump.

Hello Jane - I live in Wales, UK and recently started learning bridge; I am enjoying your online lessons.🙂 Are "Bottoms Up" and Tops Down" applicable in the UK ACOL system? Thanks
@janestearns99362 жыл бұрын
HI Les, how lovely that these lessons reach this far! I'm sorry but I don't know the UK Acol system but I would be surprised if it were different. If you are learning with a teacher at a club - check with them? This series was done for New Zealand students and I have never played bridge in the UK - however - my bridge partner here has played in the UK so I will ask her and post again when she replies :)
@janestearns99362 жыл бұрын
Hi Les - my friend tells me she was taught the same way - however she pointed me to some materials that suggest thinking may have changed in the UK and this may not now be how you are taught to bid. So I think really is best if you check with an English bridge teacher :)

What does "King rag" and "Queen rag rag" mean? You mention that in Lesson 8. Thanks!
@janestearns99362 жыл бұрын
"rags" are small cards that are not honour cards. The AKQJ and some say the 10 are honours. So the smaller "spot" cards, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are termed "rags". If you have K rag your holding is K2 or K5 etc. They are usually denoted as Kx with the "x" meaning a non-honour card. Or Qxx would be "Queen - rag - rag"

These are wonderful tutorials! I haven’t played in 35 years and want to learn again! I am in USA; will the Acol system work for me? Your tutorials are the absolute best I have found, and I do not want to change!
@janestearns99362 жыл бұрын
Thank you Linda! I'm afraid in the USA the Standard American system prevails. These lessons were made for New Zealand students as our predominant system is Acol (the same as other European countries such as the UK and The Netherlands) You can play Acol - but will need to find a partner willing to as well and they may not be easy. Maybe the ACBL has some videos that would work for you? Maybe you could suggest to the ACBL they hire me to do some :) Good luck with your bridge Linda and delighted you are returning to this amazing game.

It's a great game and worth the effort. It seems so much at first - but after playing for a year it becomes almost automatic. It does take time for it to bed in and the basics to be mastered. The big gains are meeting lots of great people and the social side that comes with it. But scrabble is a great game too :) Good luck whatever your decision.

Why the top down rule? If your partner doesn't respond couldn't you be left with a contract in a very weak suit?
@janestearns99363 жыл бұрын
Usually partner can respond and if they can't, the opponents will probably join the auction. Later in the course the reason for bidding in this way is explained further - and the sequence of your bids actually show what you don't have, as much as what you do have. I think take a leap of faith that there is good reason behind it and by the end of Lesson 6 it will hopefully be becoming clearer. Good luck with your studies.

HI Jane great videos can i ask you question, please what is the opening bid with 20 -22 HCP and 5 hearts for example thank you Jane, brillant videos
@phillipburley96753 жыл бұрын
There are many questions - like this one - that show you are progressing in your critical bridge thinking. My answer, certainly with 5332 distribution, would be to open 2NT. This causes a difficulty though... how does the partnership find out if there is an 8 card major suit fit? With the tools that a beginner possesses this is simply not possible, and you will possibly end up in 3NT when 4 of a major would have been better. You will find that there are ways of discovering an 8 card major suit fit in these circumstances, but this is beyond what would be covered in a beginners course.
@johnworf2 жыл бұрын
you can open 2nt and still find a 5-3 major fit using a system like puppet stayman.
