As a long time PC user, and relatively recent Mac convert (about 10 years ago), I admit to being old school (I am stuck on most laptops without a mouse, have never found a trackpad I liked - obviously need to try the new one from Apple). Like the ID of touch ID on the keyboard, but very tempted to find a decent mechanical keyboard I can use with the Mac.

A great review and comparisons - but seriously, how can all you reviewers keep on about the price savings without considering that THIS MACHINE HAS NO SCREEN (nor keyboard nor mouse for that matter). So, unless you already have a screen, a new mini plus studio monitor is the way more expensive (£2100) than an equivalent iMac (£1300), albeit you get a 3” bigger screen with the mini option. I can get a 24gb memory, 1TB storage version of the iMac for exactly the same price as the Studio screen and base Mac mini. That is a crap ton of price or spec difference!
@dgriffinjones7 сағат бұрын
Three counterpoints: Most people buying a desktop computer already have a display, keyboard and mouse. Even if you're starting from scratch, you don't need to buy the Apple Studio Display. The Asus ProArt display featured in this video is half the price of the Studio Display, and before that, I was using a $300 LG display. But really, even if you're buying a MacBook, you probably want to have a desktop display, keyboard and mouse too. Show me the person who's seriously cross-shopping a desktop Mac mini with a 27-inch Studio Display but decides to do all their work on a single 14-inch screen instead.

@ I think you’re missing a big demographic. I, for example, have a 2017 27” iMac in need of upgrade so have no screen to reuse, and I know many people who move from a laptop to a desktop when they retire (yes, older people use computers too!) I also personally never used an external screen when I did use a laptop, nor does my wife even now. The computer buying world are not all video editors! Finally, you even make my own point! Who IS cross shopping a Mac mini with a big screen and also using a high end MacBook? My exact point is nobody is doing that. Sure, many people, as you say, will have a bigger screen for their MacBook, but it does not really work in reverse - and there are a lot of those people around. Anyway, I don’t want to sound too critical as your video was great - it is just that NOBODY doing all these almost fanboy-like reviews and comparison videos ever accounts for the cost of a screen and accessories, and frankly comparing the price of a bare mini with a MacBook is just crazy unless that is factored in.

The Pricing Problem Nothing highlights this more than the fact that you can buy a base M4 Mac mini with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage for $599. If you want to upgrade those, your option is to increase the memory to 32GB and the storage to 512GB. If you do, the cost will be $1,199, which is more than double the price of the base model you started with. You could literally buy two base model Mac Minis, have the same amount of memory and storage, and also have $1 left over. I understand memory (and storage, for that matter) don’t work that way, but it highlights how ridiculous the upgrade pricing is. It feels like a pure cash grab from customers, which is the type of thing no company should ever do

@ArthropodSpidey12 сағат бұрын
@dgriffinjones my comment wasn't about the base model. It was specifically about the ports. For new users or people new to the Mac, they won't be able to associate "2 ports" with "base model" and may erroneously assume that the iMac only comes with 2 ports. It's best and responsible to specifically mention that there is a 4-port model as well if you're going to specifically discuss the iMac in terms of ports.

Everyone who has a 256GB or 512GB internal SSD, do a black magic speed test - then ask someone who has a 2TB internal SSD to do the same - THAT is what "Apple Tax" gets you. If your first instinct is to question "why do you NEED that speed?", you're missing the point.
@findingthereal9052Күн бұрын
Stop justifying the ridiculous prices they are charging. There is nothing unique or special about these chips, the extra speed from higher storage is just a feature of raid 0 they are configured in. The rest of the industry has passed on the falling NAND chip prices while Apple is still charging prices from a decade ago. Watch the prices of other SOCs with similar tech like Snapdragon, they are not charging these outrageous prices for storage.

Indeed, at least when comparing to a MacBook which comes with all of those. I guess if you have an old computer or mini but own a screen and keyboard it’s fair, but otherwise, you’re right. You made a quick mention about the thunder drive and how one of those drives is your Plex library. So I’m assuming you’re running a full Plex server off your M4 Pro while using it for editing photos or video. I want to do the same thing, edit 4k vid, photos, and run a Plex server. Do you see any performance issues either with the M4 Pro or the Plex server? At the moment I can only upgrade from my i7 iMac. Not upgrade and get an older Mac Mini to run a Plex serve too.
@dgriffinjonesКүн бұрын
Nitty gritty details: In the ThunderBay, I have four 8 TB drives. I have them configured in Disk Utility as a RAID set, formatted as APFS, with two volumes sharing the full capacity. One volume is Time Machine, another volume is file storage and the Plex library. It's absolutely more than capable of managing it all. Looking in Disk Utilty, the Mac barely ever breaks a sweat. You don't need two Macs.
@undergroundvideoproduction92226 сағат бұрын
@ that is exactly what I was hoping for! Planning on pulling the trigger on the M4 Pro Mac Mini with the 10gb/s Ethernet port in about two weeks. Future proofing, as I tend to keep my mac’s till I hit that hard wall of tech that makes them almost irrelevant and frustrating to use. Currently have almost 2tb of videos on a google drive and it’s just to costly to keep. With a few (not quite insignificant) upfront costs it’ll be cheaper to run and add more content and storage as I go and keep my subscription costs to clients low. So thank you!

I’ll go for the top Mini with 1 Tb of storage, so $1799. My 4 year old M1 Mini has 512 and is full and my 2 Tb external drive just stopped working and so far has only been partially recoverable. So I’ll pay for plenty of storage. I use Pixelmator super resolution daily so the performance boost is welcome. At the price of less than I used to pay for good laptops 20 years ago this new Mini is super value for money.

I'm *this close* to ordering my M4 iMac. Can't decide on which color, so I'll probably hike over to the Apple store to see them in person. I think I'm finally at peace with the smaller display, coming from my 2019 Intel 27" machine. Given that waiting for a 27" iMac appears to be futile, I'm eager to get a machine that opens apps far more quickly, hopefully boots up far more quickly, and does everything else more quickly than my current machine. I'll probably get 512 gb hard drive, but stick with the 16 gigs of ram. At 74, this may be the last Mac I ever buy and I've had 'em since they first came out.

Thing is you can purchase 2TB SSD storage for around $139.00 US these days. Would be willing to pay Apple extra $200.00 US for 2TB. Sorry, I am boring. I would order silver. Reason might be because my late father worked for ALCOA in Vancouver, WA (the first Vancouver, and not that B.C. place) before, and after his service to the nation in the South Pacific during WWII. Always been around the the virgin color of aluminum. I have owned a number of Apple iMac's over the years starting with the first Intel iMac running OS X/UNIX. Today I run a Apple MacBook Air M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 7‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage - $1,999.00 US 3/2020. Still cheaper than my original 1984 Apple McIntosh $2,500.00 US. Reason I went away from the all in one is that with my 27-inch 5K LG monitor on black VESA desk mount arm with a MacBook I have two screens. Also I can take my M1 Apple MacBook Air with me to Starbucks or when I travel with my son's family.
