why don't you grind the area around the crack out to a thin thickness right on the crack & do multiple layups to strengthen it instaead of laying patches on to for very little strength?

Unnecessary extra work and kevlar doesn't grind well. That would make a big mess.

I picked up a free 20ft Northwind kevlar canoe. Apparently the bottom cave in during a record snowy winter in Minnesota. The base foam core floor was not damaged . But basically most of the ribs connecting the sides to the dense foam core were broken. I am gong to fix it. No use telling me its junk. What is the best way to go about fixing it without adding too much weight? When i got the canoe home, i wet it on the grass with the open side up and easily pushed the bottom back where it should be. There is the port side of the bow seat where the side of the canoe is severely damaged where the seat connects. this area did not pop out to its natural position. This is the only area where the sides of the canoe are damaged. I can provide pics. Thanks...

So how long to leave the plastic wrap on??? Answer... take it off right away!! He doesn't tell you and I am a novice so I left it on a couple hours and when you peel up the wrap the patches come right with it! I scoured the internet searching for the answer too. I will not be so quick to accept internet advice...

I just got a downriver racing kayak. Found one after don't know how many years. The hull is sound but heavily oxidized. It's carbon/kevlar weave and you said you can't sand kevlar. Why's that and what can be done then? TYI

I have some of these and cannot get the smell from the pharmaceuticals that were shipped in them. The meds were in a liner but the smell is still in the plastic. No way to store water in that.

OMG! This is my canoe! I bought it 15 years ago at Quetico PP. It's been sitting in the sun since I had health problems (for about 10 yerars) so it's in terrible shape. All of the topcoat is gone. I'm hoping to restore it. Thanks for this video.

I have to do a patch repair but the Kevlar boat I bought was painted. Do I have to sand off the paint?

@@ElyresortBlogspot It’s a Scott 16 foot prospector canoe. It may have had gel coat at one point, I can’t tell but something tells me no. The guy painted over it with regular paint so I don’t know if it’s gel coat underneath.

I just got a new 30 litre one today and it is a nightmare to open. You say just bend the clasp back a little and your one easily opens mine doesn’t. Mine is also a nightmare to put the steel band back on and close it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Just remove the little metal thing from clasp which prevents it opening.

I just got an older 16ft Algonquin square back canoe. Many, many spider cracks. Will this method be a good fix. Looks like previous owner figured just a paint job would do, however. Would I want to repaint also after applying what you talked about? Thanks, rookie so any advice would be much appreciated.

If it doesn't say "Souris River Canoe" on it (it doesn't), this will not fix it. That is a polyester or vinylester resin squarestern with gel coat. Gel coat is vinylester resin with silica sand and pigment added. It offer zero strength and is intended to protect fiberglass or kevlar fibers from abrasion. It scratches white regardless of color It's only other purpose is to make the canoe look shiny so somebody buys it. Gel coat spider-web cracks with impacts, hull flexing and age. It can be 1/16" to 1/4" thick and is brittle. There is no good way to fix that. As water gets into the cracks, some of it can come off in chunks. Sorry.

@@wg6916 I've used Perfection® on a fibreglass skiff and it worked beautifully, however it is a very thin and hard coating which shows every imperfection in the surface if not prepared thoroughly. Sanding should be done with a block to produce a flat surface free of the undulations a random orbital sander produces. Finger tip sanding should also be avoided. Perfection® is NOT for structural repairs! Hairline cracks need to be opened up with a Dremel, re-saturated with un-thickened epoxy, filled and faired with epoxy w/ microballoons, painted with epoxy primer all over using the "roll and tip" method, wet sanded with 220 paper and then roll and tipped with Perfection®. However, Perfection® is no longer sold in Canada. Interlux also make Awlgrip, but that needs to be special ordered and blended in what they refer to as a "kit". Epiphanes sell a two-part epoxy paint which is still available. One part polyurethanes will scratch off very easily if the canoe is used for tripping. Not recommended

i got a old Finbore Normark. its got removable triangular blade and offset handles. nils isnt the only one with this design.

Well, technically Nils is the ONLY remaining one of this design. You won't be finding a new Finnbor ever, anywhere. They don't exist.

@@ElyresortBlogspot sadly. i hit some earth in the middle of my lake TWICE. those triangular blade are such a bitch to sharpen its hell. i havent tried a similar size flat blade yet. is there a big difference in cutting?

I got one last winter, and it takes a massive amount of downpressure to cut, even 10" down the hole. Is this operator error, or should I send the head off to Frank?

in most cases, you could put a patch on the outside and inside with some 8 ounce fiberglass cloth. Just make sure you sand with 80 grit paper and use West System epoxy. Polyester resin is complete crap.

No. No matter what "they" say, in the capacity as a canoe, you really don't need a UV topcoat. Now, were this a boat with a beautiful wood deck that sits out in the sun and rain for six months at a crack, tied to a dock, then yes. For canoes, no. For Souris Rivers specifically (and not all other brands of kevlars), "double no" to the topcoat. These are not your ordinary, run of the mill Wenonahs, Bells (Northstar), Mad Rivers, Swifts, et al, kevlar canoes.

How do you sharpen those blades? Ive tried angle grinder with a polishing type wheel. Whats the best tool to do it with? I cant afford a $70 head.

Go to redrockstore.com and click on ice blade sharpening. Scroll down and find Frank Deluca's contact info. He's who you send the head (red part only) to for sharpening. You can't sharpen on your own. Special jig is used.
