Hello from the UK. Buying a new lens will not make you a better photographer, you need to have the basic skills first. Having said that, changing from the 60mm to the 90mm macro has improved my hit rate. For future videos, haw about one explaining how to set focus peaking colours and how to change the colour of the box that comes on screen when focus stacking. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

I was thinking of getting a little ring light for my macro lens, but that diffuser makes it look inadequate. 😳 Gonna have to do more research on the matter.

I partly agree. That new OM 90mm macro lens is a game changer. I've been shooting macro for 12+ years, and it really is heads above anything i've seen on a number of camera systems. It didn't make me a 'better photographer', but it certainly allows me to take better macro photos. If I don't know how to drive that new Ferrari, I won't win any races. But that Ferrari may allow me to win races if I'm an experienced, talented driver. Having the right gear is important in maximizing your talent. You can do great things with less capable gear, but you can do better with good equipment if you know how to use. it.

I am in the grey team. Obviously,practice makes perfect. You have to put in the hours and effort. On the other hand my photography improved when I got a new camera with more possibilities. After using the new camera for a while I found out I could do some of these new things on my older cameras as well if I just approached the compositions differently. Without the new camera I would have never known.

I agree. I started photography as a kid with a very simple camera, taking years to master it. However, after that with a new camera it took considerable time again, but not as much as if I'd started with this. Now five decades and many many cameras later, I have a flash new camera, again, and it's again another learning period before I fully master this technical beast of a camera to produce great pictures. Then again, I remember some famous photo journalists that took some incredible images with nothing more than a basic SLR and a single fixed 50mm lens. They knew their gear so well they could pull it off. Know your gear like it's your friend and keep it simple.

On all media platforms the strong focus on gear can make beginners think that photography is all about buying new gear. The fun part is while most KZbinrs use sponsored/free expensive gear they add advertising about buying used gear 😂 Trustworthy? Not at all... Thank you for setting the focus on what really matters ❤️ We need more of it 😊 Personally I buy used stuff but not the stuff that have spent almost all time in the wardrobe. The really cool part is that I can have accidents without crying out loud. The best part is that rarely anyone can spot the differences between heavy used gear and expensive new gear in the photos 😊 Keep up the great work.

I had a similar experience with the first piece of truly great glass I ever bought - the Olympus ZD 150mm f/2. The first image transformed my understanding of so many things and provided huge motivation. It remains the only lens that I will never sell. So, I would argue that good quality gear plays a major role, but good images are well composed frames taken in the right way, and gear cannot provide that.

I follow the procedures you outline HOWEVER I DO NOT GET THE OPTION TO UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE UNDER THE CAMERA MANAGEMENT SECTION. Hi, I updated firmware on my OM1 M2 a week ago and AF performance in C-AF mode has gone down (working fine with S-AF). Focus aquisition is poor now with all the 3 lenses I have (90mm 3.5 macro, 12-40 2.8 and 40-150 2.8). Still investigating. Reset the settings and no use. Called the dealer and they are sending a demo body for testing. Hoping for the good, finger crossed :(

I don't think you have to justify your style of photography, like you say we all have our own methods of acquiring the image we have in our heads for the subject matter. There are many benefits for flash or no flash, and personally I think it is good to know how to do both. That said I am right at the very bottom of the learning curve using flash and that diffuser. So great to see you giving us insight about how to acquire the image using diffuser. I have a question as regards the flash......I have the 700 too and was wondering what setting you set for the spread of the light (sorry my mind has totally forgotten what the word is, I hope you understand what I mean). Hope all is grand over the pond, sounds like you have many exciting things ahead.

Is it not a trauma for insects to shoot them with flash ? I was thinking that photography must not disturb nature.
@JohnWenzelburgerJW
@JohnWenzelburgerJW 11 күн бұрын
it's my experience that the bugs don't see the flash, I have never seen one react to it. They do react to your shadow moving over them. I have this defuser I only tried it a few times it seemed awkward to me, I will have to try it again. Best rig I have used was the flash in my hand with a sock defuser on it and a trigger on the camera.

Great question! Most of the time, they really don't seem to care and even notice. But I had it happened a few times where I could tell some insects (ladybugs) got startled. So in that case, I stopped and moved to another subject. Thank you for asking this question.

Hi Emilie, a nice and helpful video. I have the combo of OM-1, FL-700, and Olympus 60mm macro + AK Diffuser (later version that stores flat.) I wish that version of the AK had two sets of Velcro straps, like the one for the 90mm lens you show. With the single set of straps, it is less secure than I would like and moves significantly. I have the straps at the bottom of the flash like your second set of straps here. Also, the front of the diffuser rubs on the knurled focus ring of the 60mm lens, making noise and creating vibrations of the entire setup while I rotate the focus ring. Is that particular to mine or does your 60mm setup fit similarly?

Hi Emily. Nicely done. I like to put my diffuser on last, so I can see inside the cone and check that my flash is positioned correctly (a little OCD? maybe), then the diffuser. After taking a safety shot(s), I review the photo(s). If some underparts are not light enough, I add the lower diffuser to bounce light upward. Flowers too, not just beetles ;7) Keep up the good work!
