How do you get the emerald pieces/keys that you want? Do you just die after each one and the game picks a new random one, while saving your progress?

Yup basically that! Once you pick up a piece it'll save that you got one in that slot and will reroll any uncollected pieces. An extra detail is if I wanted piece locations limited based off the pieces I collected, I would go in the normal order (slot 1-3). But if every option was strong or I needed a very specific final piece, I would get the pieces in reverse order (slot 3-1)!

I cant seem to lose the skewed gravity after the 17 seconds of falling

If it's not possible to lose the skewed gravity no matter how much you move the analog stick it means the gravity wasn't skewed enough for the game to notice. This happens either because you jump off the rail at a bad timing or you bounce too late. I hope the info helps!

For the Knuckles portions, is it possible for every piece to spawn where you need them without selecting restart from the menu between pieces? Or is it possible to select restart without using the analog stick?

Okay, okay, I understand you never want to do anything like this again. But technically, that's only half of SA2! :D Cannon's Core and the Eggman stages are probably a wash, but I'd be curious to see the Rouge and Shadow stages.

If you told me you were going to do a no-control stick run of SA2, I would not have guessed that Knuckles would be your savior, in that all of his levels were beatable while everyone else had at least one whiff. You'd think he'd be one of the biggest nightmares!

did you really do all this by hand and experimentation?? I assume u did and you have my props in all honesty. I wouldve figured you used a e̶m̶u̶l̶a̶t̶o̶r̶ special version of the game for pc and run pre-scripted inputs into a save file. Youre a different kind of crazy and i commend your effort

At least in the UGC platformer space I'm used to, people prefer speedrunning perfectly deterministic levels over dynamic bosses with RNG. Maybe it's a result of the playerbase being so small, but there tends to be more competition over pure skill.
