Were you not supposed to have cut another section out to make it 4 sections trims across from one another for balance. It looks like you only cut 2 on one side. Leaving only the damaged one on the opposite side.

Rohloff is very accommodating when it comes to complaints, especially if there was a mistake in the production of the gearbox. In this case it wouldn't have cost much money. In such a case, you send the thing in. Rohloff attaches great importance to quality and its name for it. If you buy a Rohloff and there is actually a factory defect in the gearbox, then you will probably get a free replacement, especially after only 17000km and 3,5Years.

DON'T use lithium grease for the internal hub, use PTFE grease instead if you must go with something else. Offers less resistance than lithium grease.

If you fit tubeless tyres and keep your chain clean, you will not have to remove the wheel more than once every few years to replacr the rotor, the pads can be replaced by simply removing the brake calliper, sometimes you can unscreew the side bolts and fit the calliper back with no alligment, free tip ;) p.s that is one dirty bike!

Hi Simon, After 20,000 km I planned to replace the cock, chain and chainring. After receiving all the spares, I was lazy and decide to tap the last bit off life out of the parts. When I heard a new noise I decide it is time to replace the parts. All easy to do, but shock and horror, the noise remained. It sounds like an additional clutch, but I suspect it is on the input drive as the sound remains the same in all the gears. Do you have any idea what this can be? Cheers

I wouldn't be happy if mine died that fast, either. My Speedhub has had close to 49K miles on it over the past 8 years and is still riding happily daily. I've had a 1000W mid-drive on the bike, ride the bike heavily loaded, pull a single-wheel trailer, and live about 50 miles from the peak of 14441-foot Mount Rainer. So they aren't light fluffy miles. It's different from when it was brand new out of the box but has yet to have any glitches. Knock on wood. I've changed the oil yearly and had it pulled apart and thoroughly cleaned twice in 8 years. I would appreciate it if Rohloff had some service reps strategically located worldwide. I only own a single bike at a time and don't want to be grounded for a month or more. In the early 80s, I was living in Germany and bought a Saab 900T, one of the most fun cars to drive I have owned. To change the front brake pads, you needed a unique tool that Saab wouldn't sell to the public; it pissed me off. I was going through brake pads pretty fast over there, so I ended up _borrowing_ one of their brake tools. I hope you're still riding safe. - photos.app.goo.gl/ADgC6oyPM2gyrCq27

I loved you video, really struggled to pick up on your incompetence, stripping down a Rohloff hub was a brave move, but you obviously knew what you were doing, the fact that you were able to highlight a defective hub is what Rohloff was what made them somewhat grimes and thus, very weakly, went for the incompetence chat. Though I do love the Rohloff hub, you have earned my utmost respect. GREAT VIDEO, clear concise and expertly delivered the information. You’ve just made me wear a big smile telling Rolhoff what the need to hear but find hard in accepting. If I were them I would replace your hub with a new on and thank you for highlighting a potential fault. You cannot claim superiority in a market if you are not willing to concede that there maybe the occasional mishap or fault. They charge a premium price, so back it up with a premium after sales service. Just a thought hey, but thank you again. 👍🚲🐻👍👍👍

If he had simply sent the gearbox to Rohloff before dismantling it, he would probably have gotten a new one from Rohloff. Rohloff is known for its goodwill, especially if Rohloff themselves made a mistake during assembly. What did he expect if he showed in a video that he had dismantled the gearbox and possibly found the fault? Even if he had still a warranty, it would have expired after dismantling the gearbox. Rohloff isn't perfect either, but they have a lot High demands on themself. It's always better to send it in and wait a few weeks. That should be worth your Rohloff.

If you look at the 3:43 mark (where you show the debris left from that spacer) you can also see the shiny inner part of the big gear is not level with the rest because it can move a bit. (in the still picture a few seconds earlier it is level) The spacer that sits on top of those 2 combined parts has to deal with that uneven level. On a good working more recent hub I noticed this is similar and the spacer was a bit deformed. The outer edge was bend a bit downwards. Perhaps the reason for your spacer to break was indeed just the little defect as you mentioned, but having a spacer deform a because of the uneven area it sits on might have accelerated this problem.

Thank you for sharing! I have a Honda FZCZ with a similar carburetor and linkage arm. A question. At 09:16 which part has the return spring? On mine it just moves freely back and forth. The motor starts and keeps running on full throttle and I can’t even pull the arm back to idle position. When you push the arm, on mine, it would be idling. When you release it, on mine, it’s full throttle. Is it the same on yours? If so, how is the motor supposed to idle in relaxed state and only throttle up when you press the actual throttle? On a weed wacker etc there are a return spring on the carb slide where the cable is attached on the top. That return spring ensures the engine returns to idle. That return spring function seems to be missing. Does it make any sense to you?? Thank you

I think this was the video that I watched some years ago that I mentioned on my site that confirms my experiences. Found it again and added a link to your video. I don't clean my chains either any more, for at least 10 years. My chain life numbers are a lot lower for 9 speed chains, but the speed at which one rides is a large factor in that and winter periods with salt on the roads quickly kill chains. Btw. at 9:00 your average is 1807 km from the numbers on your list not 1784. I deduced that you likely swapped 2 digits in one of the numbers you wrote down or the number you used to calculate the average: The number 1549 should be 1459 or you typed 1459 (in the calculator) when it should be 1549 as with 1459 it comes to an average of 1784.

The number on your hub, is the number on assembly line . IN YEAR 2000 I purchased mine. # 3442 . I sent my hub to have maintenance due to never oiling the seal and never changing oil. Nothing wrong with my hub , still works today. I would say I never regret it . Maybe the assembly line has changed.
