We should avoid cruelty that isn’t necessary, but using politics to force losses on owners of slaughter houses, meat packing, all the way to consumers is also cruel and would likely cause animals to be slaughtered and left to rot, or to starve from abandonment at least initially. Many family pets and humans can’t remain alive and healthy without meat-that’s for sure. But I don’t want to participate in cruelty or disrespect of a life. And with elephants and many other animals that form bonds that last for decades, we can do much better. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

I heard a bird call that sounded like the imitation of a hawk, but wasn’t part of a song like a mocking bird so I looked to see who made the call. It was a jay in a tree. The jay imitated a hawk call again and I wondered why. Maybe it was a warning, and I looked up into the sky and way up above a hawk was circling. Animals are here to humble us humans, I think (if they don’t, we aren’t paying attention).

This work is wonderful to contemplate. However, the study would have better served us had it not ended in tragedy. Another decade of field work regarding ELEPHANT EXCHANGES would have been better had, at the same time, you had secured the total protection of these ELEPHANTS from primal human cruelty. The anthropogenic cheering for ‘science’ is premature if they, this great ancient BEING, is exterminated. The comments cheering cannot justify ELEPHANT EXTINCTION.

I completely agree. For what it’s worth, the organization Save The Elephants, who were my collaborators on this project, have been working tirelessly to protect elephants for decades. Elephant conservation is what they do, and if not for their efforts elephants would probably be in much worse shape than they are now. If you feel like supporting elephant conservation I included a couple links in the description for how to donate.

@@MickeyPardoPhD Thank you for your kind response. After reflection I believe that why we should learn ELEPHANT is so that we can tell them that man is reaching a crescendo of hatred and violence against them. Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania are the momentary examples; however, until we destroy both the white hunter cabals and the poachers they are incapable of survival. We, their friends, must speak to them in terms that help them find refuge from man. Asian ELEPHANTS are significantly more vocal, so I hope we can identify their ‘terms’ much sooner. I do hope that very soon we can find a manner to enter into their ancient discourse reverentially. Thanks and best wishes…

@@bruceanderson5538 It's interesting that you say that Asian elephants are more vocal than African elephants. In my experience working with Asian elephants in Uda Walawe National Park, Sri Lanka and African savannah elephants in Samburu & Buffalo Springs National Reserves, Kenya, I have actually found the opposite to be the case. I don't think I ever could have done this study in Sri Lanka, and part of the reason for that is because the elephants there vocalized far less frequently than the elephants I studied in Kenya. In Kenya I was sometimes able to get more high-quality recordings in a single week than I managed to get in 7 months of fieldwork in Sri Lanka! Of course, this may not be the case for all populations of Asian and African elephants.

I think the first call because she responds. The second call looks like she's confused or expecting someone else to respond.

I found out about this yesterday. Kudos on your research. :) I know where you're coming from, to which I add that to be quite clear - life eats life. Higher principles are self-explanatory. Exceptions are legendary. And here we are.

Thank you :). It is true of course that all heterotrophic organisms must eat other living organisms to survive. But fortunately, not all living organisms have the capacity to feel pain or emotions- all the available evidence indicates that that is restricted to vertebrate animals and some invertebrate animals. And as humans, especially humans living in a modern society, we get to choose whether to farm and eat organisms that don’t suffer, like plants and fungi, or organisms that do suffer, like pigs, chickens, cows, and fish. For me the choice is quite clear- if we have the option to massively reduce the amount of suffering in the world at no significant cost to ourselves, we have a moral obligation to do so.

@@MickeyPardoPhD I've known people who must eat meat, and I've known people who swore off eating animals and preached it with great intention. From my limited though extensive survey of our hypochondriac amnesiac traumatized species I conclude there is no physiological rule for sustenance. We're all over the map. Plants react to external stimuli, communicate with each other, and we don't know how much more we can learn about them. To suffer means to allow. Imposing a system of morality on other species or on ourselves concerning other species will incite controversy. Life goes on.

Thank you for this informative film. It is so sad what the dairy industry does to cows their calves and male calves via the veal industry. I really hope that the dairy industry will end in the near future because it is so cruel and destructive to the environment in terms of pollution, deforrestation and carbon emissions.

Amazing, while it should be common sense that animals, especially mammals, form stong bonds with their children, and taking them away causes distress and harm, it was great to see the scientific evidence. It's not just us projecting human feelings on other animals. They literally suffer in ways very similar to us!

Minor correction: in the study on chicks doing arithmetic (Rugani et al. 2009), the balls were actually yellow, not red, and the chicks imprinted on five balls rather than a single ball. It has no impact on the conclusions but I wanted to correct that mistake!

Wow😮 this is an incredibly needed analysis. These animals killed for our foods our intelligent conscious creatures that deserve to live out their lives and experience a fulfilling life, not to be killed for an unsustainable meal. I know many people who work in animal agriculture, would like to ignore this but you lay out a lot of great evidence! Thank you!
