I like your feeder ideas. I think I would have engineered it to be able to fill the tubes from outside of the pen however. Easier than having to get inside the run.
@natureartgirl
@natureartgirl 19 сағат бұрын
Yes, you could definitely do that if you like. But we were trying to avoid having any openings that would allow entry of predators. So you would have to be careful to seal it well around the feeder. This works great for us since we have the door open anyway during the day to let the hens free range. So we fill the feeders then. Then when we close it up at night the hens and feed are secure.

@@natureartgirl Understandable. The one I saw on a different video was the guy ran two 2x4's across the inside of the run. Then he built a frame with a latched door with the screen attached to swing open or down like you did with your front doors to your coop. The screen you cut out for the access would be staples to the door frame like you did for your coop doors. You would have a latch on the access door. It still be predator proof like now. Just thinking is all. I guess I don't like walking around in the chicken muck any more than I have to.

Hi. We will be posting a video soon. Life has gotten in the way lately. Lance has had shoulder surgery due to an accident and the recovery time is quite long. Also I was helping to care for my dad who had several strokes and needed round the clock care. He recently passed away. So, it’s been a lot… To answer your question though, the doors are holding up quite nicely so far. Even though my new pup loves to look out at the deer in the yard and then go a little crazy scratching at the window!😳🤣 so far they are at least as tough as real wood. Love it!

Hi Cinda and Lance Great video Do you have a video showing how you cut your wall slots ? I’m going to do mine a little differently, I’m going to recess the stud back into the log wall and then cut a slot next to the stud making room for T&G boards and drywall to slide into the logs so there’s no gap to fill I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a good instructional video showing the process.
@natureartgirl
@natureartgirl 15 күн бұрын
Hi! Yes, video #27 shows how we cut the slots. Lance used a chainsaw guide (vertical chainsaw mill) we bought on Amazon to keep the cuts straight. Just screw a guide board to the logs (plumb both ways, side and front) and cut your slot. If you want to recess the whole 2x4 you could just cut 2 slots (width of your 2x4 plus T&G and drywall) then chisel out between them. We were going to do that, but chickened out when we started cutting into our beautiful logs🤣 Hope you are enjoying your build!!

I used valspar duramax exterior paint+primer flat finish. You can use whatever color you want for the base coat depending on what tone you like. I used a soft golden brown color. Only a little shows through. You could also use a reddish brown if you want that tone.

Material list for chicken coop (4) 8 foot 4x4’s (10) 8 foot two by fours for uprights (12) 8 foot two by fours for edging (16 or 18) 10 foot two by fours for rafters (4) two by fours for nest box (4) 14 foot 2 x4 for top and bottom perimeter (7) 8 foot two by sixes for hutch (3) 8 foot two by sixes for door (13) 2 x4 for diagonals and small doors and floor joists (16) 10 foot one by fours for roof and blocking Wood for ramp (2) 4 x 8 sheets of plywood Vinyl flooring if you want it 100 foot roll of 4 foot wide hardware cloth half inch (we used black plastic coated from Amazon) Extra 2 foot wide hardware cloth or wire for perimeter apron Hinges and latches (8) 10’ long pieces of metal roofing. (Cut one into shorter pieces for the top of the nest boxes) Tongue and groove siding or one by six board and bat (not sure of quantity since we cut it as needed)

You never want steel toes First your feet freeze in the winter But most importantly God forbid something does fall on your toe and it crushes the steel tip You have a major problem Better to have your toes broken then to have them crushed tight in your boot. Worked construction for over 40 years and I never had steel toes.
@natureartgirl
@natureartgirl 25 күн бұрын
Lots of opinions on the subject, but if you have something fall that is heavy enough to crush your steel toes your toes would be pretty much smashed to pieces without them. We had a friend recently that lost a toe that way. 😬

@@natureartgirl I have seen the opposite where the steel toe crush the toe ( especially the big toe ) Cut off the circulation which led to amputation. For me I would rather have my toes broken Also working in the North East steel toe tips absolutely make your feet colder in the winter. But like you said to each is his own. Also I did break my big toe by having a store front frame fall on it Still don’t regret not have steel tips.

We painted everything before we assembled our coop + run combo just to minimize rain intrusion as much as possible & touched up anything we nailed or drilled with silicone - just in case. 8 years on & no rotting - so far. Only the 4x4s & 2x4s touching the ground were pressure treated. I thought about going with coated hardware cloth, but since that's plastic, it would've degraded within a year anyway & painting it is pointless since it would just crack with any pressure put on it. LOVE the coop & the babies! ❤
@natureartgirl
@natureartgirl Ай бұрын
Yes that’s a good idea. The majority of rot starts on the cut ends so it’s smart to paint or use wood preservative on them as you go. We used the coated wire, but will have to see how it lasts. The sun is pretty brutal here in Arkansas, but so far it’s doing ok. Thanks for the info. A lot of folks are building their own coops, so your experience helps!😊👍

We are just west of Hot Springs Arkansas. The pines grow pretty straight, but we only chose the straightest ones on our property that were the right size. We also cut a few where they had a slight bend and used those where there was a window or door so we could straighten them out a bit. None were perfect, but if there is a bow in them you should try to put it to the outside. 😊

We do not want more chickens than we have, so are not planning on hatching out any more chicks. Roosters are great for protecting the hens if you need that, but we have 3 herding dogs that are very good at running off hawks and other predators. We have had roosters before and have had some bad experiences with them becoming aggressive and attacking people and pets with their spurs. It just depends on what your situation is as to whether or not they are a good idea.

They are cut on 45 degree angle. The length will vary depending on how you build your coop. I just cut one angle and hold it up even where it will fit and then mark it. Cut it and check the fit. Then before you nail it in, use it as a pattern to mark all the others. It goes pretty fast. 😊
