Awesome video. It's been a long time since I worked with asymptotes. Now, I'm wondering if I can derive a general formula or algorithm for finding any asymptote.

I got the same answer by taking 5*20 which I knew to be 100 and taking 5*21 which I knew to be 105 and then knowing that the answer was going to be between 20 and 21 I took the fraction 4/5 which I knew to be 0.8 and just added it to the 20 since the answer is less then 21.

Another way of getting the 24 and 24/7 values is by considering the fact that it costs 1 dollar to participate, so in order to get a 2 dollar expected profit your wins need to get you 1+2=3 dollars on average per game. So if you only win 1/8 times, you need to earn 3 * 8 = 24 dollars if you win, and if you win 7/8 times, you only need to earn 3 * 8/7 = 24/7 dollars per win. The 8 cancels out with the 1/8 to give an average of 3 dollars per game and the 8/7 likewise cancels out with the 7/8.

This sort of problem is touched on in my math textbook. If you just plug in the numbers you will notice that its infinity - infinity which is an indeterminate form and since the first term is first order magnitude overall (square root of x squared is back to x^1) and the second term is also x^1 you cant clearly tell which term will dominate for bigger values of x. Also even if you plug this into a calculator at some point it will stop showing approximately 1/2 but rather 0 because of loss of significance error and limited data storage in your calculator for decimal places. The graph will also look rough at big values around 10^14. To solve this you simply have to apply the methods you employed in the video to find and prove that the limit is 1/2 by removing the infinity - infinity just like how you remove 0/0 when evaluating other limits by crossing out the zero factor and so on.

Of course, to an astrophysicist, the answer might be that, notwithstanding the fact that the relationship shown is wrong for presenting to a mathematician intending him to say the same thing as the astrophysicist. 9.999...x10^3 is not 1,000, but rather 10,000. So there's the mondo scales astrophysicists work on and it doesn't matter, there's the idea it's wrong for the usual "bait the mathematician" stuff, and there's the fact that many actual mathematicians don't do menial numbers with ANY skill, aptitude, or awareness. It's literally PAINFUL to watch most on Numberphile try to do something like decide if a three digit number is divisible by 3. "Owie, pain, owie pain!" And therefore, maybe funny seeing those fellers get it wrong due to innumeracy regardless of theior mathematics chops. 'Cause, you know, mathematics is about what is with an idea, not all those dirty little numbers and such. Thatsuch is for the hoi polloi, not the lordly. I just saw, today, a mathematician need a calculator to be really sure 18/4=4.5 so that his video did not have a hitch. I imagine he was sure enough he'd've been OK with 4.5 without the calculator if not for that consideration, but... it was painful, good reason or not. And, you know, all that aside from the question of whether they are actually different (if presented correctly) or not. Having no chops, not even pork ones, I shall not weigh in. Except to say that if they ARE the same, there are no asymptotes either and f(x)=1/x has a point no one understands exists at (0,0)... Actually, that doesn't depend upon the no asymnptotes thing, so...

There's another funny thing you could do with this. You could just have the player pay one dollar, roll the die, and win two dollars regardless of the outcome. It would be a pretty boring "gambling game", but it works within the rules presented.

So if I understand curvilinear asymptotes right, the function x=0 has a curvilinear asymptote defined by x=1/x. And more generally, if you take a function g(x) that defines the asymptote for a function f(x), then the f(x) defines an asymptote for g(x).

Americans no longer use a colon (:) to represent division. Instead, they use a virgule (solidus, forward slash, /) or an obelus (a hyphen with a dot above and below it).

It correct for wrong reasons. If you integrate you get, Int(cos(x) dx) from 0 to π/2 = (sin(x)) from 0 to π/2 = Sin(π/2) -Sin(0) = 1-0=1.
