In the first flush system what is the purpose of the ball, I under stand that once the first flush is full the ball rises and seats causing the first flush to seal off and divert the water to the tank , is the purpose of the ball to stop dirt stiring back up and going into the tank pipes? Also once the first flush is full and the ball seals off does the water flowing past the ball create like a Vaccum and hold the ball against the seat or does the ball constantly go back and forth as the waters releasing from the first flush then re filling again
@DawnRedwoodGroves
@DawnRedwoodGroves Ай бұрын
Dave you are correct, the ball is to help stop dirt from swirling up and into the tanks. The drain is a very slow pin hole so in theory the ball goes up and down during the process but it leaks so slowly it more or less stays seated. Thanks for watching and asking the questions.

Awesome big log on the mill. I roll big logs the same way. I found some 2 inch steel tubing that fits over the stops that are about 3 feet long and allows me to roll these behemoths much faster and much safer. There is no chance of the log rolling over the stops

I don't like not being able to see thru it but i think the insulation factor is worth it. Our 1st greenhouse uses Tufftex It works well too. You can see thru it but it doesn't maintain heat as well. The over flow has to match diameter of incoming supply line and you could have ran 3 inch from your skimmers to your consolidation collection supply line and you should run a Y strainer right before your tank. Silt will accumulate there and you could flush the line from there also through your Y strainer . You can retro fit additional port flanges for proper over flow capacity. First flush is a joke and a waist of precious water in our off grid situations . Run a gunner on the inside of the tank out going port with the tail end above the floor of the tank so your not sucking dirt off the bottom of your tank and don't glue it fixed this way if a water line breaks you still have a reserve and you can remove it in a dire situation. Hope this helps.

You have to add chemicals to keep the Ph into your desired window. Depending on # of fish and qty of vegetation will also help/hurry the Ph level. Usually daily we add a small amount to keep everything stable.

How does the flush system work?
@DawnRedwoodGroves
@DawnRedwoodGroves 6 ай бұрын
The 1st flush has a plastic/rubber washer with a small hole in it. It shows the water to drain out. It shows the initial water to be captured in the tubes which could have the most particles/dirt/bird poop. The water then goes into the tanks. The washer allows water to continue to leak out but very slowly compared to the volume of rainfall. Once the rain stops it will drain completely out. Allowing the process too start all over on the next rain storm.

thanks for the video... seems like your supply lines are not very far from the house and also not very deep? I would be afraid of hitting a line while putting in shrubs or flowers, etc.
@DawnRedwoodGroves
@DawnRedwoodGroves 6 ай бұрын
I ran the lines down the stones path to get to the front door. So we shouldn't/wouldn't hit them. The 1st flush drains the lines so there shouldn't be any water standing in them plus I live just outside of Atlanta so we don't get real cold weather to freeze them. So far everything still works great.

Definitely needs some improvement. Why were the 4 & 6 way wedges not attached to what looked like the hydraulic piston? They were just free floating. That log lift needs to be wider. too much wood was falling off the sides.
@DawnRedwoodGroves
@DawnRedwoodGroves 6 ай бұрын
This design doesn't have the wedges attach to the cylinder. I know it's not the best but after using it for a while it works OK. The shelf also seems to have some areas that can be improved. I find the welded supports brackets seem to be right at the 16" to have splits edge catch and help push them off the sides. All this and It's still much easier and faster than the 30 ton.

Most large capacity water hauler tanks ive seen have a "sight tube" made by running a clear tube all the way from the lowest point to the highest on the exterior of the tank. As long as the top is also connected to the tank allowing air not to get trapped it reads the same level as the tank. Only issue for long term storage is it allows sunlight in and I guess could promote algae growth to some degree.

@@DawnRedwoodGroves great news, I read the comments and everyone talking about screws, I’m an engineer by trade and understand that your weight is distributed correctly directly over your uprights, my concern was the uprights not being anchored into the ground especially with such a top heavy load. Glad to hear it’s still standing and all is safe!
@DawnRedwoodGroves
@DawnRedwoodGroves Жыл бұрын
@@jeffreynewton4463 my undergrad is ME also. I didn't anchor it to the ground mainly because it is only a 16 ft^2 wall, I'm in Georgia we don't get very strong winds plus it's in the middle of a forest so any wind is diffused by all the trees. Again being in Georgia the ground doesn't freeze so we don't have the ground heaving from frost aiding in the unbalancing loads. I'm more concerned that I made it out of untreated pine that I made with my sawmill and being out in the elements how long will it last. My initial goal was to capture rainwater to help establish the orchard we started. Those trees have a few years in them and don't require as much babying them to keep them alive. Water is usually only used in the hot summer if we get a long dry spell.

Interesting video. I love the design of your sawmill shack (as I prepare to design a shack as well.) Are the bottom beams near the ground just for racking control? Thanks for sharing you build.

Thanks for the nice comments. Are the bottom beams necessary probably not. I initially designed to possibly hold slabs in between the top and bottom beams. Great splitter. It’s hard to justify the money for a commercial log splitter. You’d have to sell a LOT of firewood to pay for one. I just don’t think there’s enough money in wood to justify it
@DawnRedwoodGroves
@DawnRedwoodGroves Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on how much firewood you want to build to sell. I enjoy making firewood so it doesn't feel like work but we can all agree it is physical work. Then I scoop up a bucket full of the pieces that need to be split and use the bucket as an apron by the splitter, take out what I want to split stack it back in the bucket along with the small stuff I scooped up with the big stuff. If I don't have a bucket full I have the wood I pushed up to finish filling the bucket. Then I take it to where I want it. Thanks Tom Turbo

Don't waste your time growing avocado from seed, they don't grow true to seed. Just like apple, it will not be a viable fruit (they say only 1 out of 10k avocado seeds will make a good plant, which means you would have discovered a new strain). You need to graft a branch from a good tree to a dwarf root so you get a shorter tree that will make edible fruit and allow it to fit inside of a greenhouse. You will need 15-20 feet of height for the full sized tree, maybe less with special growing techniques like super cropping or pruning.
