OMG, I hear the word “ska” and it brings me right back to the early 90s 😂 There was definitely a sense of disdain for ska where I grew up on the East Bay of Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts. 😂 For teenagers, and early 20 year olds, it was all metal bands in my area. I was a metalhead, all my friends were in bands that played throughout the area and into Providence. Now here’s the funny thing, out on the other side of the bay, down in South County, RI, there was a huge ska scene. It always baffled me, until by chance, talking with my neighbor who grew up there and was a musician (trombone, now a music teacher), it was because of URI and one of the local high schools, that had really good brass programs and brass teachers. There was also some ska fest held in that area every year. Now, in my youth, I used to be a monster trombone player, one of the best in the area (got into Hartt because of it), and I was approached by other musicians when I’d do All-State and various ensembles around the state, to join their ska bands. I remember just shaking my head no, I’m a metalhead. Now I like ska. 😂 I like a ton of music that my younger self would’ve turned down. Thankful for growing up… a little bit, I think… jury is still out 😉

This is fantastic. I love the sub-genre crossover too (and hey, New England back then, lots of fun bands! Sgt. Scag, Spring Heeled Jack, Big D - great memories). Who was biggest in or from RI?

@ I think the most successful from the people I had hung around with is Jason Costa (goes by J. Costa since there’s another Jay Costa who’s a metal drummer up in Boston) and his band Thy Will Be Done. He was in a bunch of different bands from the 90s and early 2000s until this one got the break he was striving for. He was metal through and through, obsessed 😂 it paid off in the end.

Depeche Mode. 1993. Wow that brings me back a long time ago! Memories. Nostalgia! 😂 alrighty, I’m waiting for that book to become available for me to read so now I’m going to relisten to this album. It’s been ages. I know I’ve listened to it, but at that time I was a metalhead who listened to anything. 😂 actually, my favorite band had released my favorite album in 1993, Sepultura - Chaos A.D. Alrighty, time to get to listening! Thanks Matt!

My music is eclectic to say the least 😂 Roots Bloody Roots, another great album from Sepultura. Glad you’ve heard of them. Gotta thank MTV and Headbangers Ball for popularizing all those Metal bands at the time. 1993 was such an interesting time for music now that I think of it.

Great conversation! A deserted island 3 albums… oh geez these are always difficult to come up with 🤔 some good suggestions by the panel… Weezer Blue album, Beach Boys Pet Sounds. I’m not sure what my top 3 would be since I usually like individual songs more than the whole album 😂 I definitely know what 3 items I’d take! (1) eternally tuned grand piano like Matt Stafford 😂 (2) massive double bass drum set with tons of toms and cymbals (3) my Lego collection [I’d sneak my ukulele in too, small enough to fit in the piano, no one would notice 😉]

I’m going to have to rewatch the Ben Hunt interview so I can get the context of the “inflation” narrative he speaks of. There’s actually a divide in the MMT world as to what is “inflation”. Randy Wray, Bill Mitchell, Stephanie Kelton all accept CPI as a measure of inflation, but Warren Mosler posits that the Fed Funds Rate is the rate of inflation. I agree with Warren. Inflation is defined as a continuous increase in the price level. I see the CPI as hindsight of what happened, not what is happening, much like a snapshot (as Allan Lichtman says of polls in regards to presidential elections when compared to his Keys to the White House prediction model). And the CPI is a hindsight of an abstract consumer that changes over time with goods and services that change over time… lots of change and changing for a concept that so many find important… can anyone simply define CPI? 😂 The Fed Funds Rate affects the Term Structure of Prices now and in the future and it does so continuously, instead of a one-time price increase. And it affects the price of money itself, in regards to bank credit. That’s a big deal when it comes to the price of goods and services, I’d think. I don’t know, I just see some things differently than most, who doesn’t 🤷♂️ I’ll rewatch that interview now!

Ok, I rewatched the interview… I remember it now… I have some issues with his propositions and conclusions… That 30 minutes flew by quickly though, I was amazed, too, like you guys… were we just hypnotized by Ben Hunt? 😂

Hey Matt! So here’s your channel! Gotta love how the KZbin algorithm suggests new videos and channels. 😂 This was a very interesting talk. It made me think of Jeremy Sherman’s work - nostalgia is a form of escapism, and we can’t escape escapism, so therefore, when is it the right time and the wrong time to use various forms of nostalgia. Talking about nostalgia… I looked up Scott and his music, I know I’ve come across it at some point, it’s great stuff! I was surprised to see that he had gone to the Hartt School of Music, probably around the same time I was there. College days… pure nostalgia in the making!! 😂

@CultishCreative4 ай бұрын
It's worth it. I understand the disconnect in author-skills argument too. The unique thing here is she takes some short-form (and often visual) ideas and then maps them over a ton of larger ideas with the skills of a trained analyst. Really cool to see how it's done.

Years ago I sat on a panel at an actuarial seminar. These newly-minted actuaries asked what advice we would give to them as they began their careers. I suggested they try something new every day. Just as Grace suggested. My reasoning was that not only would it make their lives more interesting, they also never knew when it might come up in a client conversation. Thanks again for these great interviews.

Well. This was a really special story and a kind of special time. Thank you so much for this. My partner and I were down a Fleetwood Mac hole as I explained the drama and history of that band - because of drum sounds of all things! LL Cool J introduced a performance and I spoke about his relevance to Damon John and the FUBU story. I'd watched The Bear the week before where Sabotage is used as an iconic theme from the pilot across the seasons. Didn't realize the Rick Rubin origin (we know where he ends up!) nor the LL Cool J origin. It's so funny with the culture wars stuff that's the zeitgeist of 2024. The lineage of good music, hip-hop etc. the stuff that went on to last was agnostic. A bunch of cool people helping each other do cool shit as a community. There's a lot that can be taken from that and it's a lovely thing to be reminded of. Thank you for taking me on the journey!
