Would have bought a rigol DHo814 hd 12 bit or 900 series 12 bit scopes, or siglent SDS 800x hd series from 399 dollar and up to 1000. Capture rate is not the same as sampling rate..

what practical things can you do with this? I would like videos of this powering something such as a typically electric/battery screwdriver, or a water pump.

I think you should alternate the direction of the springs, so that way half are always in tension. Should make the failure load a lot higher for the device

If i need something flat, minus hardening and cooked on metal chips, i get things waterjet cut. In many instances laser and plasma are just a no no for me! Love how nice it looks. I bought a Boxford VMC260 for 600 and i converted it to mach3, total cost 1200. Mr Shubert we appreciate your service to engineering!!

A way to think about the value of this approach is that you trade contact patch velocity or pitch line velocity for compactness. In the compound approach that you describe, every point of contact on both disks experiences 90 nutations worth of travel per output rotation, while carrying the full force associated with the output torque. In a more conventional two stage approach, your output stage would only nutate 9x per output rotation, carrying the output forces. Your first stage would operate at high speed (90 nutations per output rotation) but would only carry a fraction of the output torque. So this compound stage would eliminate a bunch of bearing and be more compact, but would have higher losses and wear. All in all a good alternative to have in one's toolkit.

Couldnt you just put a cheap active balancer on it. The start correcting at a few millivolt difference. Some even have Bluetooth and you can check each voltage on your phone.

It's not friction that prevents you from backdriving it, it's mechanical advantage (or lack thereof). 20:1 ratio means this is like trying to use a level to lift something, but the fulcrum is 20 times closer to you than to the thing you've trying to lift.

It can, and in that case you'd have a planetary gearbox. AFAIK this style has lower backlash, and is slightly easier to make.

Many Cycloidal ( Strain Wave / Harmonic ) designs have essentially *Zero* Backlash. And that is extremely important for precise positioning. Your Split-Ring Epicyclic design has an *unacceptable* amount of backlash.

Too confident a statement!! TBR Linear guides themselves are not rigid, the motor is only called a spindle but is not one according to technical characteristics. Linear drives are of low power. All this is far from a powerful desktop machine. And minimizes the meaning of a steel frame!!

I have not made a coil gun but have mulling a few ideas, one is to use fiber optic strands. the IR diode is glued to a photo optic strand, and inserted into a disc used to hold the coil the disc could be cut in three parts end doughnut, two semicircles glued to the former and the fiber optic of the IR transmitter and the fiber optic to the IR receiver, then the other end doughnut. I have a few other ideas floating in my head if you like.

@LeviJanssen is the box of your machine welded or bolted together? If welded how did you minimize distortion? Are you using stepper motors or servo motors and what size are they? You said the control system was from an old cnc router you had, what brand? You said you used 3/8th steel plate for the construction, are you not worried about vibration, you have no damping mechanism? Thanks, good project, Ron.

@LeviJanssen About your coil gun project, did you already see this concept: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp3PaqV_r7-Dm7Msi=1Hu_ln5bcoOFeo9z There is a Hybrid of coil + rail gun. Guess it is a lot simpler to make a project and probably effective. 😅😁👌

The motor controller isn't increasing the amps that's just what motors do when they are impeded they draw more amps. The motor controller will limit the maximum amps it can draw so it doesn't go above the motors rating i.e. it does the opposite of what you are saying.
