You can dremel a flat on the shaft to make it a D shaft.

Also consider face-mount shaft collars: www.mcmaster.com/face-mount-shaft-collars/ Surrounding clamping forces are more reliable than set the localized clamping force of a set screw

That's the proper way of doing things. This set screw business will slip and mar the shaft.

Sick build vid, my dude. I really liked your editing. Question regarding the coil gun project. Have you looked into something like a test program that simulates electromagnetism? I've just recently started looking for one and haven't had luck so far. But if you can find an engine that properly simulates electromagnetism, maybe it can allow you to test designs virtually before implementing builds, since trial and error can become expensive.

I have not. I tend not to trust the reliability of a simulation when there are so many factors to take into account, many of which I can't accurately provide.

Levi Janssen Actually you should definitely trust em sims. There’s a reason why there’s like zero free softwares for this stuff, it’s incredibly complex and well made; any error you have is on you for not inputting the correct data. If you want any decent results in your “new innovative” coil designs then I’d go for a simulation versus your own speculation (or at least give it a shot. Also you should definitely join around discord servers for advice, there are many knowledgeable members of the ee community that could help with your incredibly disappointing yet respectably ambitious and well presented project.

It'll get destroyed in real use. Too small and flimsy. If it was made of steel, you'd have some hope.
