@scubarocks2004Ай бұрын
@@gretchenheilman7275 hey Gretchen! Hope all is well!! Costa Rica is beautiful and in December it will be 4 years living here. The 2 things I can say is 1) if you live in an area where it’s touristy or built up where you can access things readily it’s expensive (think $3,000-$5,000 per month minimum to live off of). If you move to a small Tico town you will need to learn the language (I still can’t say a sentence but I’m learning 😂) and you can live off of $2,500 per month. 2) Healthcare is awesome but you will pay similar for insurance as you do in the US or you can get residency. You would need a lawyer if you don’t speak the language and it will run average $5,000+ and it takes about 1-1.5 years to get it. Then you are required to pay into their healthcare system and if you can prove you make a min pension of $1,000/month it’s very affordable. It was a difficult transition but after 3-3.5 years we are finally enjoying it to the max! Also, cars are VERY expensive! If you live in a location where you need a car you would MINIMUM need $15,000 to get one you can trust. New cars will cost you about 20-25% more than if you purchase in the US.

First surf trip in 1993 with my middle school kids and stayed in forever under construction hotel on ocean front point, ate at Olga’s and some wood fired pizza place. Had to pump gas from 55 gallon drum at local gas station. Fortunately there were other much better surf spots during that first trip.

Kalia are developers that destroy the beauty of Costa Rica for profit. How can Kaila claim they are sustainable and eco-friendly as 'Costa Rica's fastest growing luxury home' developers with "1,000 acres of lush land, plotted and ready for you to build the home of your dreams" on? If I was going to move to Costa Rica, I think I would much prefer to support people who were doing something to save the natural habitat not plow it down to build more infinity pools. Buy a plot of land that has already been cleared, rebuild better, and then plant native plants all around that. Don't support the gross behavior that Kalia seems to be thriving on... this grossly disguised eco-friendly luxury home developer and the people that pour wealth into the destruction of costa rica is exactly the kind of people that will have the globe in flames in 50 years.
@scubarocks20043 жыл бұрын
I did not build in Kalia. I opted to build on a lot and had an architect that was passionate about tropical design. We built the house so it was actually hidden among the tropical garden of native plants. We build using the best septic system and had a bionest installed to reuse black water. It’s our responsibility to build responsibly and not encourage the builders, architects, etc to build frivolous to destroy the environment. It’s ultimately our responsibility to tame the beasts.

I loved it there but also my place was broken into three times and all my laptops and camera gear was stolen... back in 2012.
@scubarocks20045 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is sad that there is petty theft there and it happens every day. I just know how to protect myself the best way possible to avoid this from happening. I am moving to Nosara end of 2020 and happy I am moving from a place that has more concrete that land, there were 4 shootings/deaths within a few blocks from where I live. There was an attack and near rape a block from where I lived and cars are broken into on a daily basis. I see no terrorist attacks, mass shootings, school shootings, or other horrible acts of violence so I choose that over the USA (which I love!). But ready for a lifestyle much different. BUT you are so right...petty theft is real and you need to be aware of it. Thanks and I hope you did see the beauty.

Mila's Dance Party hello! Thank you! I did go on june and I love surfing but the 2 times I went in June the waves were too big (large swells) so I had to just surf the inside whitewater. The waves are much different than where I live! I’m moving there (building a home now) so I’m looking forward to getting better! The best thing to do is find a local surf shop or surf camp and reach out to see when the waves would be best for a beginner. Dec through April is high/dry season and it’s more populated. This past Oct (which is the month it rains the most) I think the flooding was horrible and there may have been 1 or 2 good days of surf. I’m NO expert but the locals are!
