I remember this song. It stay in my head as a child of 8 years old. Then one Sunday I heard that song in church along with my brothers and sister. Mom was sick that Sunday but sent us on to church. I walked down aisle hearing that song and onlookers 👏🏾 at me. I felt proud and know I was doing the right thing. When I got home I got in trouble my siblings told my mom what I had done. Her words till this day was “ Gull you don’t nothing about God” no wonder God has forsaken me. I thought I was going through the son to get t his father. Anyway I remember being baptized on the first Sunday. I was the first child baptized. 😎

Some may know this but want to share some history of this style of singing. It’s was developed by Dr Issac Watts in the 1700’s referred to as “lined out” or Dr Watts hymn singing. It’s one of the oldest English folk style of singing still sung in the US. A leader who was able to read in the time of slavery where it was against United Staes law for slaves to be literate, would sing the words of the song to others with a faster flow and the audience or congregation would respond back by repeating/singing the words much slower. There is a video floating around that is well put together discussing this. But the information is also online.

Hearing this as an adult VS as a child is so opposite. Ig it takes living for it to make sense and be felt deep in your soul.
