Sad that the downtown is like a Ghost town, city should support some local business to make it alive again
@bobby-ov9qn16 күн бұрын
Agreed. I graduated from NC Wesleyan College in 1965, and the downtown area was booming on both sides of the tracks. Came thru on the train years later, and it was indeed a ghost town. Although I now l have retired to North Carolina, I never returned to RM.

I live in New Bern moving up from Vero Beach 3 months ago. I agree that the downtown is very beautiful and the streets are historic with great shops and restaurants. IMO, that's where the excitement stops. You take a look at things to do and memorable experiences, maybe visiting Tryon Palace is at the top of the list. BUT, the Chamber of Commerce, the VisitNewBern group and the City are just sitting on their hands not doing anything extraordinary. The only big event of the year is in October, aka the Mumfest. Yea, they have this ongoing Farmer's market every Saturday with the same vendors pretty much the whole year. The VisitNewBern group has joined something called "Mainstreet USA", where they are supposed to be the coordinating entity for bigger things. Those things can include a monthly block party called "Last Friday" where say Middle Street is blocked off for a 3-4 hour timeframe. There would be a regional band playing, food trucks converge, vendors paying a nominal fee of $ 75 can set up their booths on the street and the BIG bonus is all the restaurants and shop keepers stay open till 8 pm so that all the visitors can enjoy their shops. I've seen what a success this can be first hand in Vero Beach, where I was one of the vendors. It's a great fund raiser that can support worthy causes raising a couple thousand dollars from the vendors, who can join the Mainstreet group for about $ 100 per year and get a discounted rental fee. Yea, they have an Art Walk sponsored by another group, visit the local graveyard, etc. Still haven't seen a Summer Concert Series, where some really good entertainment is booked to help fill up the hotels and restaurants for a two day Musicfest. This stuff is not rocket science. You just have to be motivated to "think outside the box" for a template that already exists. I think I'll be looking further South around the Morehead City/Swansboro area to put my permanent roots down.

Need to visit a new restaurant Mary's&Mike's on the famous murk in Fayetteville right across from the old small Walmart! It's in the building that use to be a German restaurant! Soul food at its best and they just had their 1 yr anniversary! Just felt they deserved a spot light .oment on the map as they have lasted during a very rough economic Era in time recently !

I'm watching this video from Russia. In our country, settlements with 5.000 residents are called villages. I am amazed at how developed the infrastructure is. Beautiful, clean, everything you need for life. Is it possible to buy housing in such a city for up to $100,000? Where do city residents work?

Amazing to hear My Tarheel has worldwide viewers! The median home price in Shallotte is $245,000. Homes in towns that are near the beach are generally much more expensive. The largest industries in Shallotte are retail and health services. Hope this helps!

@@mytarheeladventures These are very interesting facts for me! Thank you. I tried to compare Shallotte and Primorsk (Kaliningrad region, Russia). About 5 thousand residents live in Primorsk (in russian Приморск). The average salary is 25.000- 50.000 rubles/ month with a 5/2 schedule. The cost of housing is from 4 million rubles to 10 million rubles. Maybe you will be as curious as me...)) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fna7haxmjs92l7Msi=r42ZsdQ7ggrDx4eA
