in the first hand there is a nice way to find an extra trick if you know where to look. As soon as you win the Q of clubs in dummy, you know you hold the last club (since west discarded a club on the second round of trumps) you can invite east to ruff by playing the club, in which case you can always overruff. Of course a good defender will not fall for this and will choose to discard, but if he holds 3 spades it doesn't matter you can always create your extra trick by ruffing your club winner, then clear spades ending in dummy again and finally leading back a spade ant trick 12, when both east and you hold 2 trumps each. But he must play before you so you can win cheaply and have the last trick as well

Thank you Joan for these excellent videos; I learn alot since you first explain the concept, then show the example hand. On this hand I would have incorrectly trumped that third spade with the 2H.

So, is this system designed to be played over a weak or a strong no trump? Or both? The web tells me strong, but I’m guessing both possible, but you want to be a lot less fussy over weak.

3 of a minor over 2 of a major means 6+ in the minor with no support for the major. 2NT is the correct "bid your minor" response.
@JoanButtsBridge
@JoanButtsBridge 4 ай бұрын
Some people play that, others prefer "pass or correct". Depends on your partnership.

Thank you @@JoanButtsBridge, but are you certain? Every reference I can find online lists the 2nt response as standard and says nothing about a 3c/pass-transfer option, although a partnership could certainly have that as an agreement I suppose.

@@mercutio24 Let's looks at both Michael's Cue Bids and Cappelletti. (both two suited overcalls). I play that 2NT at any level is always asking for the minor in Michaels. With Cappelletti you actually have two choices: eg 1NT (2♥overcall) Pass if you want partner to show their minor it's 3♣ (pass or correct), but that risks missing game if you had a good hand, as overcaller with clubs would pass when clubs is the second suit. Thus using 2NT forces an answer and at least you might get to game on a good hand. Funnily enough, EVEN with a fit for hearts, sometimes partner might bid 2NT, and after hearing the minor, take you back to hearts, to show a stronger hand than just raising hearts. That's how I like to do it. Check it out on other sites.

Could opener not be tempted to open 2NT with 20 HCP inspite of 2 d'btons as honours in both are held & contract may veer towards 6N which does not make with H ace & diamond length with East? Or would dealer still do Stayman with 11 HCP but with both majors?
@JoanButtsBridge
@JoanButtsBridge 9 ай бұрын
Hi Yes, 2NT could easily be opened, as you say, both doubletons are honours in the 5-4-2-2 shape. Dealer would still use Stayman, and the heart contract would be reached. Cheers

Hi Joan, I was taught (by John Roberts) to respond to the 2NT at the 3 level only with 16+ points. With a minimum holding we respond at the 4 level, giving partner the extra info. I'm intrigued by responder's rebid showing a control, which we weren't taught. What I'm seeing from this video is that you don't place the extra importance on the points, rather the shape instead.
@JoanButtsBridge
@JoanButtsBridge 10 ай бұрын
Hi John is an excellent teacher. 16+ points without a shortage is fine, I just say better than minimum which is the same. There are partnership variations to the responses to Jacoby 2NT but the whole idea is that if you can show shortages and controls you are able to bid much lower point slams than thought. Yes, it's all about shape. John would agree with that. Responder's rebid after opener shows a shortage is a control looking for slam, and say the shortage info is GOOD. If it's not just go to game. Cheers
