My dr told me recently that my crutches are now optional, BUT said I can only have about 40% weight on my foot. I'm like, what?!?!? How can I take a step but not have 100% of my weight on that foot when the other foot is off the floor???? My husband thinks I'm dumb as a result...but I just don't understand it. Thank you for the explanation here that 50% still needs support and that without the crutches it's 100% half the time. Edited to add, as of the date I wrote this, I'm about 1 month post-op from surgery for Haglund's Deformity and Achilles tendon repair (severing it, removing part of it to get rid of some calcifications in it from a broken spur, then removing the spur and deformity). After watching your videos on 25% and this one for 50%, I realize I've been doing it wrong and have been putting too much weight on that foot. No wonder it's been hurting so much more than I thought it should be! I'll have to ease up. Thanks!

Sir, Madam, I am an orthopedics patient. I got seriously injured and broke my left leg in a road accident in Bangladesh. I have had several operations on my feet in Bangladesh. But it did not yield any results. I was a victim of a road accident in the last two thousand and one years. Two thousand and twenty three years have passed since then. I am living a very difficult life. That is called the living of humanity. I applied to many hospitals around the world for treatment of my feet. But no one responded to me. I am asking you for humanitarian help as a human being. I need better treatment. I think every doctor in the world is humane. I believe that some great doctor will come forward to treat me. I have two little girls. Their future will be dark for me. As a father, I cannot accept that. Please help me please. Someone help me for better treatment, please. I don't want to take any treatment in Bangladesh and Asia. I want to go to any developed country in the world such as America, London, France, Spain and take treatment in these countries. I have been suffering for almost twenty three years now. If you help me a little, then the Creator will help you. God bless all, Amen 🙏🙏🙏🙏 My address: I am: M.A. Quader, Banshkhali, Chittagong-4393, Bangladesh. My mobile and whatsapp number: 01819-877376, I wish you all the best. thank you *****

My physiotherapist came to my home to explain this to me for both my walker and the crutches. I find it very scary anyways to put a lot of weight, am recovering from a tibia plateau fracture and on top of that broke the outside bone of my foot on that same leg, so l was told it's going to be a long revalidation period. Small steps literally, but we are going forward, to all in this process of learning to walk again, lots of patience and perseverance, we can do it 👊🏽💗🫶🏼

I broke my ankle on the springboard in gym class back in grade 7ish. About 50 years ago. It was a bad break but seems like I rocketed through the casts, walking cast etc. One day I just went out to the tool shed and cut the thing off myself and was back running in gym class. No physiology or anything. On June 6th I had ankle fusion surgery. That was 6 weeks ago and I'm getting ready to start bearing weight. Totally a different story now that I'm older and much heavier. This physio is going to be long and torturous. I'm actually a little worried.

I'm a PTA, have been for 22 years and this is not how I was taught. TTWB/FFWB is what you describe in this video. What I say is "Act like there's an egg under the ball of your foot. Don't break it." 25%WB means you can put down 25% of your weight. If you are 190#, you put your affected leg on a scale and press down no more than 48-50#.

Unfortunately, Chris, PWB with % is a bit nebulous and "grey" when it comes to educating a patient unless of course a weighing scale, biofeedback device or pressure plate is used for precision. Regardless, it's typically not necessary to provide specifics to the patient other than general guidelines for more than Touch down/toe touch but less than bilateral stance which is 50% without BUE support with DME. I personally despise PWB precautions as it is difficult to educate and hard to determine consistency of adherence. This video would make easy enough to get the patient through until WBAT is allowed by the ortho team, in my professional opinion.

People and doctors! Please give your patients a shoe lifter for the good foot. Your hip is three inches higher and you will have enormous issues with hip pain once you start to walk again. Also, your knee takes ALL the force of the step when your ankle is immobilised. This will be detrimental to your whole body for weeks after the boot is off. I had an avulsion fracture on the 5th metatarsal and micro fractures on my cuboid. Nasty injury! I stayed on two crutches for two weeks after the boot came off using incremental weight bearing during the day but mostly non-weight bearing, then a single crutch for 5 weeks with partial weight bearing. I rested the leg higher than heart for two hours a day to relieve oedema. Then one crutch for outside for two weeks, just for security on unstable surfaces. I am 4 months out of the boot and feel some discomfort but not much pain anymore. The perineal tendon is super tight and this takes time to open up. Also your calcaneus is still super flexible for up to 6 weeks out of the boot and even longer, and soft tissues are still sensitive and healing. So let your body be your guide. Don’t aggravate your injury by overusing it. Get X-rays at 3 months, six months and 12 months. And strengthen and stretch your hip flexors! Your butt will be completely atrophied and this is the time to build it up, so you have less strain on your feet.

After a month in a walking boot, Dr told me he want to see me in my shoe, out of the walking boot... Start walking again. Made me stand on my injury leg while my good leg was lifted up. Kinda crazy felt like my ankle was about to break again... Not even 25% weight bearing... So I requested physical therapy to help with the process.
