What were the symptoms like when driving, did the car shake?
@TheMorriedog
@TheMorriedog 3 ай бұрын
No, I couldn't feel anything when driving because there isn't actually that much movement and the weight tends to hold it in one place. That's one reason trunnions can be dangerous - the difference between "good" and "wheel falls off" is small!

@@TheMorriedog okay! I have had a Spit mk2 once… didnt had this problem, but having a tr3 now, I noticed a lot of play just like yours. And around 55mph noticed that the car shaked a lot, above 57 moh it was gone. … changed about everything, axles, etc, but found eventually the play in the trunnion and changed it, now the car drives like a charm

I’ve owned my Mk. 1V for over 40 years, so I think I’m qualified to say that those threaded trunnions are a bit of a sloppy fit when new - and I’m not referring to pattern parts !!

Worked as a plant fitter in the 70's. These usually had petter engines but sometimes lister. Bought the parts for these in Ruislip. ( not the engines. Lister in staines and petter in Acton). Good Times.

Well I’ll be! I’ve never considered the possibility of my morrie losing traction due to throttle application... I really must finish that 1275 conversion 🤣
@TheMorriedog
@TheMorriedog 4 жыл бұрын
It's a lot of fun! This one has a hotter cam, extractors and custom exhaust with headers, but even a totally standard 1275 is great in a Minor. They are a very torquey engine and make the minor very driveable in modern traffic. Mine has a diff out of a Marina 1.8 for a much taller ratio, so it cruises well at highway speeds.

TheMorriedog thanks for the reply 👍 do the marina diff internals fit the Minor rear axle or did you install the marina assembly?

I like the idea of a sedate 1961 Morris Minor especially with said Marina improvements (a Borg Warner 35 would be nice). We agree that they were not designed for speed so why push the limits? The nearest I've owned is my beloved Marina 1.8TC Coupe (BVH141K). The B series fed by twin SUs' made lovely noises and it was quick! Keeping it on the road could be a challenge but it was always fun. I'm eternally grateful for the combination of extreme understeer, axle tramp and predictable oversteer. Such anomalies taught me how to drive. The fact that modern cars are much more forgiving is surely a double edged sword.

It was a lot of fun! However very old and worn. Needed work on steering clutches, tracks and hydraulics, all of which were very time consuming and expensive. This is the problem with old machines. I sold it because I didn't have the time... it needed a major overhaul.

@TheMorriedog

Quite right! However this thing is so wide and low that it's pretty stable. I took it up down and around some pretty steep slopes. Biggest problem was losing steering going uphill as there wasn't much weight on the front wheel.
