I’ve owned my Mk. 1V for over 40 years, so I think I’m qualified to say that those threaded trunnions are a bit of a sloppy fit when new - and I’m not referring to pattern parts !!

What were the symptoms like when driving, did the car shake?

No, I couldn't feel anything when driving because there isn't actually that much movement and the weight tends to hold it in one place. That's one reason trunnions can be dangerous - the difference between "good" and "wheel falls off" is small!

@@TheMorriedog okay! I have had a Spit mk2 once… didnt had this problem, but having a tr3 now, I noticed a lot of play just like yours. And around 55mph noticed that the car shaked a lot, above 57 moh it was gone. … changed about everything, axles, etc, but found eventually the play in the trunnion and changed it, now the car drives like a charm

And don't put any kind of grease in it, like the previous owner of my Triumph did. Use EP or SAE 90 gear oil.

+Mark van Vlerken The previous owner of mine had certainly not put any kind of grease in it... or oil, either...
