Lol as an 30+ year programmer and someone who has been all over the internet for as long I've rarely ever used Google. Yahoo was, of course my old favorite, but I've used pretty much every but Google the for as long as I've been on the internet. DDG mostly now. Google is now blocked in my hosts/PiHole/etc on every network and device myself and my family owns. And I still find everything I need perfectly fine.

In 2001, I had one of the first "Internet" connected phones of the time (on AT&T's PocketNet network specifically which scraped and re-presented web pages) with my Mitsubishi T250. I was on my way to work when I got a "breaking news" SMS and started to check what was happening on CNN's website. It was an eerie feeling being on my train, knowing what i did, and seeing everyone still oblivious to what was happening on the East Coast. Up to that Internet on the mobile was a curiosity, a novelty, something for people to OOH and AAH at and now it's everywhere.

This video should be updated with one thing that changed browsers forever, and it was by Microsoft. Without xmlHttpRequest, the basic AJAX concept and all of the interactive contents we use in browsers today would not exist. Please check wikipedia on this and include how one small Microsoft innovation that the created to update inbox count for Outlook for the web, became a standard that make all the web browser, interactive.

Asking Jeeves actually gave you real answers, in contrast to Ai giving conflicting and sometimes wrong answers. Supposedly alot of their answers were derived from Yahoo! Answers, which was a predecessor to Quora.

Our IT department always sends out emails right before they push out an update, so when all of our lab instruments got stuck in the eternal boot loop, I thought they just screwed it up lol. Cut to about 4 hours later during lunch, and I call my mom and tell her how I didn’t get any work done because IT somehow messed up the new update, and she said something to the effect of “no, you goofball, it’s happening worldwide. Don’t you check the news on your phone?” I did not, in fact, check the news on my phone during that 4 hour timespan.💀

The first internet service i used was prodigy, then CompuServe, then AOL came along. I can remember spending hours at friend's houses talking junk to people in chat rooms

We had two pop/Top 40 stations in my area when I was in high school, and I always noticed that one had a slightly higher pitch than the other - not enough to notice normally, but if they happened to both be playing the same song, the difference became obvious. I wondered for years why they did that, and now I guess I know haha.

Perhaps a few versions down the road you can ask ChatGPT to troubleshoot particular flash games and feed that back into ruffle, if those developers won't already be using machine learning tools to iron out the kinks and bugs by that time. Preservation feels so important to me, too. What is preserved can always be processed with better tools of the future.

you imply that search engines have improved over time when it's pretty much universally agreed upon that their design and functionality have been in decline for years. quite frankly, it's really weird that you didn't acknowledge it when at this point everyone knows that no matter what you try to google nowadays, it comes up with nothing but endless pages of AI-generated web articles and listicles. i would give anything to have 2010s google back

These days, Google has kind of lost its way, and their search results are not as good as they used to be back in the day. Too much focus on their SEO results and web ad systems has dragged their quality down. Now they are facing a similar issue to the Microsoft lawsuit against Netscape. Google basically controls web standards, as their browser engine (Chromium) is used by all of their competitors except Mozilla, which is the last one standing with a bespoke engine. Now, the FTC wants to split Chrome from them for that alleged monopoly and also prevent them from making agreements with phone manufacturers to set Google as the default search engine.

PageRank was inspired by academic papers. Every time you use somebody's work in your own paper, you have to credit that work you used to create your own. More people credited, the more popular it is. Larry Page decided to do the same for web pages.

Now a days I can copy and paste the entire title to a FB marketplace listing, and it doesn't even come up. I honestly think many of the things we call "better" today, are far worse. Search tabs are definitely one of those things.
