@@1SqueakyWheel back in the 90s copy protection was a big deal, but all the existing hardware tech was for floppy discs and wouldn't work for cd rom. in the win95 days there weren't many viruses and there was a file called autorun.inf in most cds to run a greeting program when you inserted a disc. sony i think put a program on their music cds at the time to monitor the system and interfere if any attempts were made to rip the cd to the hard disk. This didn't work on all systems and caused the operating system to freeze for some users. it caused a huge backlash against sony and a loss of trust in proprietary software. i'm recounting what was in pc magazines at the time. i have never bought a sony cd rom.

Because we had so little allowance between the three of us we always bought albums that were popular or were being recommended by the sellers. Audio engineer & radio person here: On our station we generally don’t up pitch songs mostly, and usually we’ll cut verses etc to have versions to make up time. Sometimes we’ll speed it up to 5% but you really don’t wanna be messing with the pitch there, it makes most modern music weird. Also any decent turntable is quartz locked to have less than 0.2% deviation from perfect speed. The pros of vinyl is that it can store well above 20khz so if you slow it down it still sounds pretty good (you need a microline or similar & 96khz sampling or higher to use this.., but almost every vinyl after the mid 80s is digitally made with lot to no data above 22kHz. The other pro is lifespan. There’s no bitrot issues on a vinyl unlike CD / DVD, HDD, SSD etc… The life to vinyl also comes from the rumble and clicks etc… that are all considered 'erronious’ by engineers! With the bios thing, that’d be easy to run on modern hardware but would need a rogue update / factory to install. Its big effect would be with airgapped systems. For context, a basic 192khz sound card can send all the data of an fm signal, mono, stereo and rds data. It’s easy on any decent sound card to send data above hearing ranges.

Bit rot is only really an issue for really early CDs and cheap CD-R/CD-RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW discs. Outside of writeable/re-writeable discs, optical discs that were produced and sold as read-only from the mid-90s onward won't experience bit rot for at least a few centuries, and unlike vinyl, you can create infinite lossless copies and backups from a single disc. The bigger concern with optical media is scratches and delamination from improper handling and storage, and optical sensors failing.

Vinyl begins to taper off between 16 and 18khz, which is why people prefer it, it sounds "warmer" because of the signal loss. I have a massive vinyl collection but the signal to noise ratio and frequency response of even the best players and stylus cartridges can never match CD. Even though we can perceive frequencies above 20khz I have my doubts other than pleasing harmonic distortion that vinyl can hit above 20khz, physics is at play and that can destroy a lot of needles. Then you had the "loudness war" of the 90s and 2000s where everyone was competing to have the loudest wall of sound. Related to this.. Out of 20,000 songs I may have there’s only one song in which sounds distorted everywhere I play it. In the car it sounds distorted when I loaded into the audio program it looks clipped, So I said to myself it must be a song that it’s just badly recorded. So I decided to take this song and put it in a player called Winamp which has a pre-amplifier on the side and as I lower the preamplifier to my surprise the song sounds perfect! No distortion whatsoever! Looks like it has been recorded past the 0 dB range without distortion or probably the header of the file is broken somehow. It’s the oddest song of my whole collection!

If they were tuned to that frequency, the food would only heat on the very surface. Some bigger ovens for heating chunks of meat actually operate at 915MHz. @@Karthor. Make sure you don’t use your nice microwave, if it touches the inside of the oven, it’ll arc and burn the paint off where it arced. The oven shouldn’t get damaged, but it ruins the corrosion resistance making the oven inside rust. If you don’t need over 100°C, you should wrap it in a wet towel, this prevents arcing.

if your turntable is playing things slightly too fast, it isn’t on purpose. if you dont have a crystal clocked one, just adjust your speeds… the knobs are there for a reason

12:09 That's Windows 10, which released in 2015, and also, laptop HDDs can be preeeeetty thin so yeah it's probably a HDD. I believe that video is fake though, computers don't just "black out" or completely shutdown when their HDDs or SSDs fail, they keep going because the essential components for the operating system to run are still in RAM, so in that case, Windows would just keep on going like nothing happened. The issue comes when you or the OS tries performing tasks that require the retrieval of data from storage, in which case the operating system will not detect the storage device, will start to freak out, throwing a kernel panic, causing a blue screen on Windows, and making Linux freeze / automatically try to reboot, but NOT shutdown imediately as shown in that video.

I call bull on the whole of this. Chen's bio on the Microsoft devs page states 'He occasionally appears on the Windows Dev Docs Twitter account to tell stories which convey no useful information. ' Great start followed by the first line of his story featured here: 'A colleague of mine shared' - this is how all urban legends get spread. Just for the record, resonant frequencies also exist in purely electronic circuits.

I'd heard something similar to the BadBIOS story. It involved security researchers isolating test computers by removing network connections on a computer and then infecting it with some malware. Some malware was able to communicate with other infected computers via infrasound despite seemingly being isolated. (It couldn't do the initial infection via sound, but airgapped computers weren't actually isolated.)

The laptops shown at 12:00 absolutely could have spinning harddrives in them. The roughly credit-card sized SSD's are in the 2.5" form factor. It was originally created for HDDs. Many laptops still come with a small SSD and a larger secondary HDD. Even my HP laptop from 2020 came with that setup.
