I have not been there but there are about 36 relict old growth White Fir on the north slope of New York Mountain. Don't know if it's Ny1 or NY2. They were abundant here until the Sierra uplift made a big rain shadow. There are no more young trees, too dry for new ones. All the trees are ancient elders.

Excellent video. I was there yesterday, solo also, and made the same decision as you: to stop before the lip.

Technically 1905 is just the patent date. It's most likely a 1907 or 1917 model (there was also a rare entirely hammerless 1915 model).

Love seeing those old Kelty backpacks still in use. I have a slightly newer version of the same Kelty D4 / Mountaineer from that I got in 1978. It is still in great shape. I used it a few years ago in the San Jacinto wilderness and got all these comments from other hikers of how "retro" it was. It is actually pretty light for a frame pack.

What a fantastic video! You really express the quiet, severe beauty of this place. And that huge , fairly flat valley! Amazing. I thought that there were some foundation stones for some huts around there somewhere, as well.

Thanks for the nice comment! I have been to this area a few times and I always wondered if some of the rock piles there were remnants of old structures. It’s very hard to tell looking at them up close. I’ve always wanted to get a aerial view with my drone but it’s not allowed 😕

First of all, I wanted to thank you for making this video. I don't know what animal makes that call that is repeated throughout your video, and I wish I knew. But I used to hear that animal every morning when I would wake up when camping in Mill Creek up in Big Bear. I haven't heard that sound for many years and hearing it again after all this time was very healing to my soul. Secondly, I would really like to know where that little cabin is! Good find!

Thanks for this vid! The NY Mtns are just gorgeous, especially at sunrise or sunset - OMG! I never climbed up there, but the views near the base and camping along NY Mtn road are outstanding. Mojave camping and exploring is such a joy, like an all-day theme park ride for grown ups (and me).

I was just up there two weeks ago. I am surprised you went into the mine! Camped night 1 at the spot at 14:21 you said was a good campsite - it was! I could not figure out a way to summit NY2 without ropes, approaching from north side as per an AllTrails route that really didn't seem to make any sense. Day 2 I went down the west/south side of the mountain into Caruthers Canyon. I wanted to go down and around the range just to see a different area and also avoid going back down the boulder fields/scramble with a 40 lb. pack. Day 3 was a 17 mile hike around the range first to the south then coming back up along the east side of the range to return to the car at Keystone Canyon.

Thank you so much for bringing back some great memories to all of us Running Springs natives who can no longer make this hike! The older Miller and Burmeister kids put that rope around the tree at the top of the opposite rock formation and the pool below was much deeper back then, so all the brave kids would grab the rope and swing out to drop into the pool. It used to be great fishing there and the flat rocks were for towels and tanning. We hiked down the stair stepped dry water fall in summer.😊😊😊😊😊
