Im really stressing a bit. Im 60 and retiring in 3 years. Besides, a little nest egg of $50,000, I will only bring in about $1800. a month. I worry with inflation and the increses in cost of living even since this video was made. Although I do realize that I'll do a lot better in Thialand with $1800 a month than staying in America.

I am a very experienced investment analyst and former retirement adviser with high level expertise in medical care. I have lived in and have experienced hospitals in Thailand as well as the USA. When you're older, you should be most concerned with two things: HEALTH & MONEY. HEALTH. In my professional opinion based on everything I know, including having lived in Thailand, the #1 consideration people should make (especially retirees) when considering countries to retire to is the QUALITY OF MEDICAL CARE AND ESPECIALLY THE QUALITY OF ADVANCED MEDICAL CARE. Let’s look at the QUALITY OF THAILAND’S MEDICAL CARE and ADVANCED MEDICAL CARE first. Thailand medical care is generally okay for routine checkups and minor procedures. And many private hospitals are also okay for some routine invasive procedures. However, in my opinion Thailand hospitals general score poorly in terms of survival rates with respect to chronic disease and emergency treatment compared to survival rates in advanced nations. In short, Thailand hospitals do not perform particularly well with chronic disease care and emergency care due to high dependence in these treatment areas on high-tech and advanced training. Incidentally, there is no hospital I know of in Thailand that has a truly comprehensive cancer treatment center. In contrast, the USA have numerous hospitals with world-class comprehensive cancer treatment centers. As far as emergency medical services are concerned, keep in mind that the road traffic in Thailand does not yield to ambulances. Imagine having a medical emergency in Thailand and having to wait 1 hour for an ambulance to arrive. If your situation is life-threatening, you may not make it to the hospital alive. If you do manage to make it to the ER, you can be certain that the ER doctors do not have the level of skills, training or high tech equipment found in the USA and other western nations. Moreover, Thailand scores poorly in public safety (safe walkways, road safety, construction safety, etc.). What does public safety have to do with medical care and why is public safety so important? Consider the fact that a simple accident (resulting in a broken hip which is common for elderly) can send you to the hospital. The survival rate for broken hips is not good any due to hospital acquired infections. The reality is that you should expect your life expectancy to be reduced by several years as a result of issues with medical care alone if you move from the west to Thailand. This is a fact that cannot be legitimately disputed. MONEY: I find it ironic how all vloggers focus on cost of living as the main draw to retiring in Thailand and other developing countries with mediocre to poor medical care, when the facts are #1: Thailand living costs are rising rapidly. I was just in Bangkok and spent $5,000 in just 2 weeks. I did not party. Bangkok costs are now quite high. Even costs in Chiang Mai are climbing quite fast. But the main point is this. If you are scraping the bottom of the barrel with your budget, the LAST thing you'd want to do is move to a country that lacks a social safety net because you also have no family there nor anyone else you can count on if something unexpected happens and you need a good deal of money fast. On the other hand, if you are living in the west and you are just getting by, you will qualify for various welfare programs from food and shelter to medical care. AND, hospitals in the west (all countries that I know of) cannot legally refuse critical medical treatment to anyone regardless of their ability to pay. But in Thailand, if you cannot prove you can pay for the expected treatment in advance, many (if not all) private hospitals will transfer you to a government hospital (if you're lucky). Think about that if you are unconscious so you cannot prove the ability to pay. You might end up passing in transit to the government hospital like what happened to a foreigner in Thailand not long ago. When it comes to considering priorities for relocating for retirement, people need to start thinking smarter people instead of using YT videos as a source of valid and reliable information because I can assure you it’s not. Ad-based content is never reliable nor in your best interests.

I like living by it for the view and because of the cooler weather. I’d much rather swim in my pool and I can’t spend more than a few days a year sitting on the beach without getting board. I only planned to be here a few months but then I found good friends, started a NPO and fell in love. Hua Hin does have much cleaner water but it’s not important to me.

Hello Pete, new subscriber here. I am seriously considering retiring in Thailand next summer (July 2025) in the Jomtien beach area. I am 68, working in China currently. I have about 120,000 USD in savings and investments. I am not collecting Social Security as of yet, I am waiting until July 2026 when I will be 70 and get the maximum amount, which would be about 2,300 USD a month. (Is that a good idea or should I wait until then?). I have talked to a few agents, some who cut corners, if you know what I mean. I feel most comfortable finding a good agent who would do things the right way. Any suggestions or advice? In the meantime I am going to dive in to some of your other videos to gain more information. Thanks!

I try to stray away from financial advice here. Personally, depending on the difference in SS for waiting, I’d probably just come here. I definitely took a financial risk coming here when I did but the pandemic taught me you can’t predict the future and I was going to live more for today. As for agents, even the most legit can cut corners if needed. This is Thailand. For a retirement visa, that usually just means faking your bank deposit but can also include other documents (like a rental agreement). As long as you find your Thai account early enough and bring your rental/lease agreement, your entire visa process should be legit and by the book. I hope this helps and thanks for the sub 🙏🏼

As an American I would say you need to budget that you are getting 28 to the dollar. So if your budget is $1500 a month you need to be able to live off 42,000 baht. Why it’s good to keep your house at home and rent it out as inflation tends to move quicker in western countries. Pacific cross do a good in patient and out patient policy for a 50 year old for 24000 baht a year covering you for $10,000 inpatient with no deductible. I see heaps of expat videos and they don’t account for health insurance or visa fees.

Hi, it's Thailand Fever co-author Chris Pirazzi. Cool channel and many thanks for the very kind review! Some of your viewers contacted us to ask where to get Thailand Fever. At the moment Asia Books in Thailand has it in their shops and website, and Lazada has some. For those in US/Europe, Amazon is out of stock, so the only option is the secondhand copies that come up there from time to time, or having a friend in Thailand forward you a copy. We plan to make an electronic version of Thailand Fever and shift to that format instead of paper, so we likely will not do more print runs. The electronic form has been on our todo list for some time, but now more urgent as the last print copies run out. We may also modernize some sections; is there anything in particular you or your viewers would add/change? Thanks again!

Been with my Thai wife 16 years. 31 year age difference. We dated 2 years before we married. 8 months before I met her family. We married in the U.S. No dowry or big Thai wedding. We just had our first child together which we thought we’d never have as docs told her she couldn’t conceive. I highly recommend it for an older guy! Gives your life a whole new meaning. I suspect I could write quite a book. First I’d say a relationship with a Thai woman isn’t much different than any other woman. Yeah there are cultural differences but not as big a deal as you think. Growing up in the 60s and 70s in the U.S. prepared me a bit especially when it comes to family values. I really love that about the culture. My dad was always the provider and even took care of both sets of grandparents at times especially as they got older. I have no issue helping out her family from time to time. Financially I’m quite well off as a retired lawyer and it’s no issue at all for me. I think the money thing is the biggest issue for most guys. All of a sudden they are viewed as rich here while in their own country and their own mind they are usually not so well off by western standards and are very protective of what they have - especially after retirement when they can’t make it back. My wife is college educated and speaks fluent English after living in the U.S. most of our marriage. She’s also an American citizen. I can speak Thai pretty well. That helps. We now live in Hua Hin and doing great! We get back to the States often and still maintain several homes there. She adapted very well there and had her own retail store there as she does here now. Don’t want to paint an overly rosey picture. You will face challenges. But all in all Thai women make great wives and companions. Mine always keeps me laughing! Just stay away from the low value women in the bars. They are prostitutes and that’s where the gold diggers will be encountered most often. Plenty of great women everywhere here. But you’ll need to approach them. They won’t approach you. Most will be flattered by the attention from a foreigner.

Thank you. There were many things we seemed to do and understand before reading the book that the booked touched on. We're both pretty understanding with each other and are stronger together.

Wow! What a great book. Thanks for the summary. Sounds like you are doing great with ❤ I’m very hesitant of the interracial aspects being such a big challenge but this (reading together) looks promising. Thanks for the excellent summary 🙏🏽

That's her bread and butter right there. She lived in BK for 20 years so she knows it very well.

You're not a ex-pat... Your a immigrant...

I am kinda both... first definition from the Oxford dictionary - a person who lives outside their native country. Obviously, I live outside my native country. I also moved here with the intention to stay 2-4 years only. I'm not building a house or buying property here. I have no issue with being called an immigrant. Maybe I am an immigrant but words evolve overtime. Nearly everyone refers to us as ex-pats here, including people that visit here, live here, or live somewhere else.

@peteonretreat2023 sorry I wasn't trying to be offensive... Im a British born Indian from the UK London... But my parents are still considered immigrants even though they came here in 1965... Hope you're keeping well 👍🏽

@@memeagain4106 no worries and no offense at all. I have had this internal debate on the subject myself for 2 years now. I have even talked about it with some friends and my father. Words and language are kinda funny and I think of myself both as an immigrant and an expat but I use expat because it seems to be the most common term used.

I think officially I am in Pattaya but its the Pratumnak area. My side of Pratumnak Hill is known as Cosy Beach or Kasetsin.
