Also, what I find the most intrigiung part of this era of motorsports is that it seems like such a wild west compared to grand prix racing of now (or even the 30s). Entrants like Mathis just cruising around between all the fast cars at 30 mph, organizers coming up with a stupid formula that no one likes, organizing races in the middle of winter for no reason, things like that. The 1920s had more exciting races, awesome experimental cars, aerodynamics wars, sportier cars, it is in almost every way a better era, but the 1900s were just goofier, which I like.

Were they able to measure time using 1/10 of a second? Even at the 1950 British Grand Prix the FIA used 1/25 sec timers, came from horse racing. 42 years after this GP season...
@MostlyRacingАй бұрын
Almost certainly not! Drivers who had fractions of a second recorded in their lap times seem to be exclusively for fastest laps. I suspect those fractions were used either as a tie break with another driver or if there were discrepancies between different time keepers (official vs teams). That really is guess work though. I'll do some digging

It doesn't have anything to do with the race, but Fisher had a lot of trouble convincing people that the dangerous gasses used in the headlights wouldn't combust. The people who trusted his assurances that the manufacturing process would be safe, were treated to multiple fires and explosions over the next 3 years.

I'm not sure if it was the case for every single voiturette race but I've seen more than 1 reference to these cars having one cylinder. Maurice Sizaire about the 1907 Coupe de Voiturettes, “On October 21st, 1907 we appeared on the starting line with three cars having single-cylinder engines of 100 mm. x 150 mm"

Genuinely phenomenal - what a great concept for a series! There’s a distinct lack of… well, anything really about early 1900s Grand Prix racing. In a lot of ways, you are collating and preserving history that’s been left to quietly slide into obscurity by almost everyone. Really like how you’ve attempted to group it all into some kind of championship, as it provides a solid, understandable narrative that helps set the scene. Really good video, very much looking forward to 1908!

They were indeed. Big engine = more speed. Can't remember if I said this in the video but the winning Brasier was the only car in the race to be less than 10L (9896cc to be exact!)

I am a long time fan and amateur historian of this great American classic. I must say: hats off to a fine job. I found your work very accurate and entertaining. My favorite was the mentioning of Cyrus Patschke as Harroun's relief driver. He has never gotten the credit he deserves for his efforts. An additional note: Patschke also relief drove for Marmon team mate, Joe Dawson, who finished 5th...the next year Dawson would go on to win on a National.

Update on 1907 and Nazzaro?
@MostlyRacing Жыл бұрын
Ah yes So, I had scripted out a video from 1907-1914 because I was struggling to find any major details on smaller races other than the results. After I'd done this, I then discovered that L'Auto have had all their newspapers archived and they have SO much detail in them so I'm completely rewriting everything. The issue I'm having is I don't speak French! So I'm typing out pages and pages of these papers so I can just chuck them into a translator which is taking ages. I sometimes post some stuff from there on Twitter. I promise I am working on it and it's awesome there's someone actively looking forward to my next video so thank you
